Shrub shears vs hedge trimmer

Updated: October 2026

You have a hedge in front of you and two tools in the search results, and the names overlap. A hand hedge trimmer in this comparison is a one-handed cordless shear. A hedge trimmer, in the usual UK sense, is a longer bar you sweep along a face. Shrub shears vs hedge trimmer is that split: soft new growth and edges stay with the shear, a long hedge goes to the longer tool, and large leaves go to secateurs. Prices for the shears are on the [hand hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/hand-hedge-trimmer). We compared eleven amazon.co.uk listings from 22 October 2026 and did not test a 45 cm trimmer here. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Same shelf name, different tool

Amazon.co.uk will call both machines a hedge trimmer. The bars in this shear set are mostly 10–15 cm. Flouritech’s 22.7 cm is the longest we kept, and it is still far short of a 45 cm blade. Grass widths sit around 70–131 mm, which is an edge beside a path or a pot, not a lawn. Which? puts a 45–60 cm blade in the usual trimmer range and says hand shears may be enough for a small hedge. A 45 cm Flymo-class trimmer was removed from this category: a 45 cm dual-action blade, a loop handle, and 3.53 kg. That is the other tool. Bosch DIY’s EasyHedgeCut 45, a 45 cm corded trimmer around 2.6 kg, is the same class and is not an ASIN here.

What a shear can take

Where this capture prints a thickness, it is 6 mm on Flouritech, 7.8 mm on both WORKPRO colours, and 8 mm on Bryze and Enventor. Bosch, LIGO, and POSENPRO do not print one. About 8 mm of soft growth is a rule of thumb from those lines and from STIHL’s UK note on the HSA 26, which is not in this set. Do not give every ASIN that 8 mm. Which? treats about 20 mm as a common trimmer spacing. The EasyHedgeCut 45’s 16 mm opening, on a machine that is not in this set, shows the same jump. WORKPRO’s bullet says 370 g without blades. Bosch is 530 g. The POSENPRO 12 V line is 1.7 kg. The 45 cm examples sit nearer 2.6–3.53 kg. Once you still want a shear, charger and review depth are the cordless shrub shears buying guide.

When you want the 45 cm class instead

Choose a full hedge trimmer when the run is long or you are taking the year’s growth off a proper hedge. STIHL’s UK guide puts a shrub shear on small growth and a longer model on bigger hedges. Those STIHL models are not picks here. Stars on a 12 cm shear do not rank it against a 45 cm trimmer. If you already own a full trimmer, a shear is a second tool for edges, not a replacement. Which shear suits a small plot is cordless shears for small gardens.

Laurel, height, and the closed season

Cherry laurel shreds under shears and under a trimmer. The RHS sends you to secateurs or loppers so the leaf is cut, not torn. A short screen along the fence does not change that. Thrive says not to cut above head height. Damaging a nest in use or being built is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and Northern Ireland has its own order. The RSPB treats March to September as the main season. GOV.UK’s 1 March to 31 August ban is for agricultural hedgerows in England, not a private garden by default. If the shear still fits, the conditional picks are on best cordless shrub shears.

Common questions

Can a hand hedge trimmer cut a whole privet or beech hedge?
It can nibble soft tips on a short run if the growth is within about 6–8 mm where a figure is printed. It will not replace a 45 cm trimmer on a long privet or beech face. Working more slowly does not add centimetres of blade.
I have one small box hedge. Do I still need a 45 cm trimmer?
Not if the box is a ball or a short run you can shape with a 12 cm blade in several passes, below your shoulder. A 45 cm trimmer is the tool when that hedge is actually a long face. Box suits a shear better than laurel does.
Why was a Flymo removed from this set?
A Flymo 18V SimpliCut 450 was in the first capture and was removed because it is a full hedge trimmer: a 45 cm dual-action blade, a loop handle, and 3.53 kg. It is the right shape of tool for a different comparison. It is not a product on this page.
Is a 21 V shear with a 22.7 cm blade the middle option?
It is the longest shear in this set, not a middle tool between a 12 cm shear and a 45 cm trimmer. Flouritech states a 6 mm cut, which is thinner than several cheaper shears, and the sample is 21 reviews. Two removable packs are the difference that matters. The 23,000 rpm line is a listing claim. For a long hedge you still want the other category.
Can I trim a farm hedgerow with either tool in summer?
In England, GOV.UK restricts cutting agricultural hedgerows from 1 March to 31 August. That rule is not the default for a private garden hedge. A nest in use is still an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, whichever tool you hold.
