How to use cordless grass shears

Updated: October 2026

How to use cordless grass shears starts when the tool is in the hall and the job is a lawn edge or a soft shrub. Some boxes include a mains charger, some only a USB-C lead, and two rows do not name a lock-off. The steps below follow the amazon.co.uk captures of 22 October 2026. The spec grid is the [hand hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/hand-hedge-trimmer). A qualifying purchase through our links can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Before you cut, check for a nest in use under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, or the Wildlife (Northern Ireland) Order 1985. Put on eye protection and gloves, take the guard off only for the cut, and keep the work dry and below shoulder height.

Charge what is actually in the box

Charge from the lead that was named, not from the lead you hoped was included. Both LIGO models, both POSENPRO 7.2 V colours, the POSENPRO 12 V, and Flouritech name a charger in the kit. Both WORKPRO colours and the Bryze give you a USB-C cable and say the mains brick is not in the box. Enventor includes a USB-C cable and does not say whether a brick is there. Bosch’s amazon capture does not name a charger, while the Bosch DIY GB page lists a Micro USB cable. If the carton does not match that line, read the cordless shrub shears buying guide before you invent a wall adaptor. Most cells are built in. Only Flouritech lists two removable 4500 mAh packs. Runtime lines are claims, and LIGO and POSENPRO print no minute figure.

Lock-off, then cut

Read the lock on your model. WORKPRO’s capture is lock, then trigger. POSENPRO 7.2 V uses a two-point button and a safety key. LIGO and the POSENPRO 12 V state a double safety lock. Enventor states a double safety switch. Bryze states a safety lock on top of the handle. Bosch and Flouritech leave a named lock-off as n/a on the capture. Flouritech claims safety boards on the packs. That is not a trigger order, so do not invent one. If the tool will not start, the missed step is often the key or the lock, not a dead motor. Release either control and the blade should stop. Do not cut in the wet, and do not work above your shoulder.

Fit the blade and take a light pass

Stop the blades before you touch them. Gloves stay on. Several rows state a tool-free change. Both LIGO models only say two blades are supplied, so follow the paper in that box. The grass blade is the short edge. The shrub blade is the longer bar for soft tips. Dragging the shrub bar through soil will blunt it. Take a light pass on this year’s soft growth. Where a listing prints a thickness, WORKPRO says 7.8 mm, Bryze and Enventor say 8 mm, and Flouritech says 6 mm. The other rows do not print one. A stall is a thickness problem. Large leaves such as laurel belong to secateurs. A patio of pots is cordless shears for small gardens.

Clean, store, and stop

Sap comes off with a wipe, not a hose. Use a little sewing-machine oil, not grease, and do not submerge the tool. Dry the blades before the guard goes back. WORKPRO says charge at least every three months in storage. Only Flouritech has packs you can remove. Do not unclip a cell that is built in. When the cell will no longer charge, recycle the shear as electrical waste. GOV.UK says not to put a lithium tool in the household bin. Stop if the work is above shoulder height, the growth is years overdue, or the hedge is an agricultural hedgerow in England from 1 March to 31 August. That farming rule is not a ban on a private garden hedge. A long woody run is shrub shears vs hedge trimmer.

Common questions

Which blade is for the hedge and which is for the lawn edge?
The shorter, wider head is the grass edge, about 70 mm to 13.1 cm in this set. The longer bar is the shrub blade, mostly 10–15 cm, or 22.7 cm on the Flouritech. Neither head mows a lawn or finishes a 45 cm hedge face.
Can I change the blade while it is still charged?
You can, if the shear is stopped, the lock is off, and your gloves are on. A charged tool can still start if a trigger is nudged. The LIGO captures only say two blades are supplied, so do not assume a push-button. Never change a blade while it is running.
How do I clean sap off the blades without soaking the tool?
Stop the shear and wipe the blades. Use a little sewing-machine oil, not grease or a solvent bath, and do not submerge the body. Dry the blades before the guard goes on. These listings do not claim wet use.
How do I store a shear whose battery does not come out?
Switch it off, clean it, and keep it dry and frost-free. WORKPRO says charge at least every three months in storage. STIHL’s note for integrated packs is to charge again before the next season’s use. Only the Flouritech has two packs you can remove, and those should not sit for months at a full charge if you follow the removable-pack advice from Which?. A winter left flat is a common reason the tool is dead in March.
Why did it stall on a thick stem?
The stem is past the listed cut, or past soft growth if no figure is printed. WORKPRO states 7.8 mm, Bryze and Enventor 8 mm, and Flouritech 6 mm. The rest are n/a. Stop and use secateurs. Do not lean on the tool.
