How to use an electric lawn mower

Updated: October 2026

The risky part is the next twenty minutes: a wet surface, a lead left on a reel, or a clog you clear while the blade can still turn. This is how to use an electric lawn mower for one cut with a corded machine, or with the Swift EB122C or a Ryobi you have already fitted with a pack. The [electric lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/electric-lawn-mower) holds the twelve amazon.co.uk listings, priced on 19 October 2026. Do not start on wet grass

If the grass is wet, or it is dew, you do not start. Electrical Safety First treats dew as rain, and the RHS says not to use plug-in garden tools in the rain. An RCD does not make a soaked lawn safe. Clear stones and toys first. Leave the first cut high. The Forte hover’s lowest spacer is 12 mm, low enough to scalp.

RCD, plug, and one outdoor lead

Electrical Safety First wants a UK three-pin fused plug. If that circuit has no RCD, use a plug-in RCD and test it before you mow. Use one outdoor extension, fully unwound. Do not plug one extension into another. Bosch, Flymo, and Ark Mat print no cable length, so measure to the far corner. Printed leads are 10 m, or 11 m on the Hyundai HYM3313E, whose reviewers say the plug falls out. If it will not stay seated, you stop. Choosing mains or a pack is on the corded or cordless page, and printed lead lengths are on the buying guide.

The cut

Set a high height and start on dry grass with the lead on the side you have already cut. The RHS wants the cable behind you. Do not mow backwards over it. Stop the motor before you empty the box. EasyRotak 32-220 reviewers pull spring-loaded wheels with fingers near the blade. Do that only with the plug out. The Forte hover uses spacers and a spanner, with the machine isolated.

A clog, a cordless deck, and a hot plug

Clear a clog with the machine dead. The corded plug is out of the socket, not merely the switch released. On the Swift, or a Ryobi with a pack fitted, the battery comes off before you tip the deck. A hot plug, a nicked sheath, or a connector forced back in ends the session. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject a fault in the mower. It is not a remedy for a lead you cut yourself. Charge with the maker’s charger, on a hard flat surface, and not while you are asleep.

When you stop and call someone

Stop when the plug or sheath is damaged, the outdoor socket is dead, or a new machine has no English instructions and no UK plug. A like-for-like socket face is the narrow DIY exception the RHS describes. A new outdoor socket in England and Wales is Part P work. A swollen or hot lithium pack is not a DIY opening. If it is on fire, that is a 999 call. If a dry, clear, high cut and a sound lead still will not run, the next step is the seller or a repairer.

Common questions

Can I mow wet grass if the mower is electric?
No. Electrical Safety First counts dew as wet, and the RHS says not to use plug-in tools in the rain. An RCD does not make wet grass safe to mow. Wait until the lawn is dry. A reviewer of the EasyRotak 32-225 describes the deck packing up when the grass is slightly damp.
Do I need an RCD if the fuse box is modern?
You need to know the circuit you are using is RCD-protected, not merely that the cupboard looks new. Electrical Safety First says use a plug-in RCD if the consumer unit does not provide one. Test the device before you mow. A modern board with an unprotected outdoor circuit is still a gap.
How do I keep the cable out of the blade?
Put the lead on the grass you have already cut, and keep it behind you, which is the RHS method. Do not throw slack forward into the next strip, and do not mow backwards over the cable. If the listing prints no length, measure the garden. Bosch, Flymo, and Ark Mat leave that length blank.
Can I plug two extension leads together?
No. Electrical Safety First says one outdoor lead, fully unwound, and no daisy-chain. A reel left wound can cut out or overheat. If one lead does not reach, the answer is a nearer socket, fitted by an electrician when it is a new outdoor point, not a second cable plugged into the first.
When do I unplug, or take the battery out?
Before you clear a clog, tip the deck, or change the height with your hands near the blade. Unplug a corded mower at the socket. On the Swift or a Ryobi, remove the pack first. Releasing the handle switch is not the same as isolating the machine. Let a spinning blade finish before you reach under.
What height for the first cut?
Leave it high. Longer grass at the start of the season, and in dry weather, is the Which? guidance we are using as a rule of thumb, not as a test of these mowers. The Forte hover can go down to 12 mm with spacers. That is a scalping risk on the first pass.
Who fits a new outdoor socket?
In England and Wales a new outdoor socket is Part P work for a qualified electrician, as the RHS explains. Replacing a damaged socket like for like is the narrow exception they describe. In Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask a local electrician rather than copy an England-only shortcut.
