Electric lawn mower buying guide

Updated: October 2026

An electric lawn mower buying guide tells you which number to trust: the width, the lead or the battery, and whether the listing agrees with itself. The [electric lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/electric-lawn-mower) holds twelve amazon.co.uk listings gathered on 19 October 2026. Peter F. read those listings and public UK guides. We did not mow a test lawn. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Start with the lawn and the socket

Start with the socket and the width of the grass you actually cut. A corded mower runs while the lead reaches. A cordless mower stops when the pack is flat. Ten machines here are corded, from 1,200 W to 1,800 W, and none of the listings says the mower is self-propelled. The Swift EB122C at about £134.99 includes a 40 V 2.0 Ah pack and charger, with a maker claim of up to 50 m². The Ryobi OLM1833B at about £160.20 is the body only. Its 250 m² bullet assumes a 5.0 Ah ONE+ pack that is not in the box. No outdoor socket is closer to the Swift’s 22 cm kit than to a 40 cm deck. The corded or cordless lawn mower page stays on that split.

Three UK width guides, not one rule

Which? puts under about 50 m² at roughly 30–34 cm and over about 150 m² above 40 cm. English Garden puts 30–35 cm up to 250 m², and its large-lawn row above 43 cm. B&Q treats a higher wattage as a nameplate, not a measured cut. None of those pages tested these twelve ASINs. This folder runs from 22 cm to 40 cm on the Bosch AdvancedRotak 40-650. There is no legal width. A 32 cm deck cannot obey both tables. Pace the lawn, then use the listing’s centimetres.

What has to be printed before you trust it

A lead, a box in litres, a roller, and mulch count only when the listing states them. Stated leads are 10 m on the LawnMaster, both Forte models, and the Hyundai HYM3800E, or 11 m on the HYM3313E. Bosch, Flymo, and Ark Mat print none. Boxes run from 26 L on the Forte hover to 40 L on the HYM3800E. The Flymo includes a box and does not give litres. A question on the Ark Mat page is not a mulch plug. A rear roller is stated on the LawnMaster, the Forte MEB1434C-04, and the HYM3800E. Hyundai reviews call that roller light.

When the same file disagrees

The Flymo bullets say 20 to 60 mm and the specification minimum says 20 centimetres. The Ryobi bullets say 25–65 mm and a specification line says 65 centimetres. The Swift highlight says five heights and the spec says three, from 30 to 50 mm. The EasyRotak 32-225 pairs 25–65 mm with one position. The AdvancedRotak’s 1 kg line and 1 × 1 × 1 cm dimensions are a broken field. The Flymo is still 4.6 from 6,673 ratings at about £110, which is why it is the top pick here. Check the lever on the mower. The HYM3800E also clashes: 12.5 kg in a bullet and 13.8 kg on the item line.

Safety you do not negotiate

UK mains are nominally 230 V. Only the HYM3800E prints that figure. Electrical Safety First wants a UK three-pin fused plug, no mowing on wet grass or dew, and an RCD if you cut the lead. Use one outdoor extension, fully unwound. Unplug, or remove the battery, before you clear the blade. A new outdoor socket in England and Wales is Part P work. The Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 require English instructions and a UKCA or CE mark. The 2001 outdoor-noise rules set a 96 dB sound-power limit for a mower up to 50 cm wide. The Flymo’s 87 dB(A) is pressure at the ear, not that label. Do not charge a swollen or hot pack.

Common questions

What cutting width do I need?
Pace the lawn, then treat width as a guide. Which? puts under about 50 m² at roughly 30–34 cm. English Garden puts 30–35 cm up to 250 m². This folder runs from 22 cm to 40 cm, and there is no legal width in the UK rules we used. Use the centimetres printed on the listing you can check.
Do I need a rear roller?
Only if stripes are the point, and only where a roller is stated. Here that is the LawnMaster, the Forte 34 cm roller, and the Hyundai HYM3800E. Hyundai reviewers call that roller light. A stated roller is not a measured stripe.
What if the listing gives centimetres and millimetres for the same height?
Do not average them. The Flymo’s 20–60 mm bullets and its 20 centimetre minimum are a conflict, as are the Ryobi’s 65 mm and 65 cm lines. Confirm the lever on the mower. If the goods do not match the description you relied on, the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives 30 days to reject.
How long a cable is enough, and when is an outdoor extension required?
Printed leads here are 10 m or 11 m, and only where the listing says so. Bosch, Flymo, and Ark Mat print none, so you measure the garden. If one outdoor lead, fully unwound, does not reach, you need a nearer socket. Electrical Safety First says not to join two extensions.
Is a body-only price the price to mow?
No. The Ryobi at about £160.20 excludes the battery and charger. The 250 m² line needs a 5.0 Ah pack that is not in the box. The Swift at about £134.99 includes its 2.0 Ah pack and charger, so that price is a kit, limited by the maker’s claim of up to 50 m² and up to 35 minutes.
