Telescopic hedge trimmer for tall hedges from the ground

Updated: October 2026

The top of the hedge is above your head, the stepladder is already out, and a listing has promised four metres as if that were a measured pole. A telescopic hedge trimmer for tall hedges is worth buying when you can see and steer that top from the ground and the growth is still green. If you still need the ladder, or a line crosses the hedge, or the wood is brown conifer, stop. The [cordless telescopic hedge trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-telescopic-hedge-trimmer) is the set of poles, with their stated reaches left as printed. This is not a measured cut. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Read the height claim before you trust it

Two 4 m claims are not the same measurement. Ryobi’s 18 V EZ Reach page states a 3 m pole and a claimed height up to 4 m. Bosch’s UK page states reach up to 2.6 m. Neither sentence is a 4 m shaft. Inside this capture, Hyundai states a 2.6 m pole and up to 3.6 m reach, so the extra metre is you. The MZK title says 2.4 m. The bare Bosch ASIN does not print metres, so it does not inherit 2.6 m from the maker’s site. About 2.4 m of shaft is a rule of thumb for a hedge around 2 m, because your arms add height. How to read a shaft against a tooth gap is the buying guide. BS EN 62841-4-2 does not certify any ASIN on this page.

Stay on the ground, and stay clear of the line

The Health and Safety Executive tells employers to avoid work at height, and an extendable tool from the ground is the worked example. More than about 30 minutes on a stepladder is the prompt to change method. If the plan is ladder plus pole, the plan is wrong. Keep an aluminium pole at least 6 m horizontally from an overhead line unless that line is dead or protected. HSE states that clearance for ladders near lines, and a pole is the same problem with a longer metal shaft. A cable over the hedge is a stop. If you cannot hold that clearance, leave it.

Green tips are a trim; brown conifer is not

A tall hedge of this year’s green growth is the job. A leylandii taken back to brown wood is not. The foliage does not regrow from that old wood. A hard side cut that exposes brown will stay brown. If you cannot see the top, a longer domestic pole does not become a platform. Stems fatter than about 16 mm are the same limit. When the only cut left is into wood the plant will not replace, book someone who can reduce it, or leave it.

A longer domestic pole is not a platform

Past the reach you can steer, extra shaft is fatigue and a blind cut. Reviewers describe heads that feel acceptable in the box and heavy once extended. A strap shares that mass. Sukumo’s hedge reach stops at 215 cm, enough for a modest screen and useless for a tree-sized leylandii. If you can see the top and the growth is green, the sequence is on how to use a telescopic hedge trimmer: battery out to set the head, sides then top, stop for a nest. A contractor is the right call when the hedge needs a platform, overhangs a road or glass, sits near a live line, or has to lose old wood.

Common questions

How high a hedge can a domestic pole actually do?
As high as you can see and steer from the ground, which for many house hedges is the band around a 2.4–2.8 m shaft plus your own reach. Hyundai’s split, 2.6 m of pole and 3.6 m of reach, shows the difference. A 4 m claim on a Ryobi page is not a 4 m pole. If the top is out of sight, the tool is already too short for a controlled cut, whatever the title says.
Can I stand on a ladder with the pole?
Do not plan to. The pole is the alternative to the ladder, which is why HSE points employers at extendable tools from the ground. A householder is not being prosecuted from that page, and a ladder plus a long shaft is still a fall with a moving blade. If the hedge only finishes from the steps, it is too tall for this tool. More than about 30 minutes on a stepladder is the point where the method should change.
What about the cable over the hedge?
Stay at least 6 m horizontally from an overhead line unless it is dead or protected. That is HSE’s clearance, and an aluminium pole is a long conductor. Do not trim under it carefully. If the hedge and the line share that space, the job is for the network operator or a contractor who can get the line made dead, not for a Sunday cut from the lawn.
Can I cut a leylandii back to the brown?
No, not if you want a green face afterwards. Leylandii and most conifers do not regrow from old brown wood. Light green tips are a trim. Opening the side to bare stems leaves a brown gap that a longer pole will not fill in. Stop at green growth, or hand the reduction to someone who can reshape the hedge.
When is a tree surgeon the right call?
When you cannot control the top from the ground, when the hedge overhangs a road or a neighbour’s glass, when a line is inside the 6 m clearance, or when old wood has to come off. A platform job is not a domestic pole job. Covered agricultural hedgerows in England also have a closed season from 1 March to 31 August, which a garden boundary does not automatically share. The surgeon is for height and wood, not for a green tip you can already see.
