Chainsaw safety for a UK garden

Updated: October 2026

The saw is small, the gloves are in the carton, and the apple tree is in your garden, so it is easy to treat the job as a gadget. Chainsaw safety for a UK garden starts from the opposite view. A mini chainsaw is still a chain. Kickback, a ladder and a protected tree do not shrink because the bar is 6 inches. This page is the rules. Prices stay on the [cordless pruning saw comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-pruning-saw). Peter F. used HSE, the Office for Product Safety and Standards, Electrical Safety First, GOV.UK and the RHS. There was no injury trial. A mini saw is still a chainsaw

The Office for Product Safety and Standards said on 16 April 2019 that chainsaws cause fatal and major injuries, and that home users are hurt by the same shortcuts as people at work. HSE INDG317 describes kickback as the bar nose throwing the saw back. These kits document a safety switch or dual lock, not a chain brake. Electrical Safety First lists those as separate features. Bosch's GKE 18V-15 states a kickback sensor, and it is not one of these twelve ASINs. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a short-term right to reject goods that are not of satisfactory quality, generally within 30 days. That is not a reason to run a cracked cover. A certificate is the HSE expectation when the work is paid work on or in a tree.

What to wear

For chainsaw work, HSE's PPE list includes gloves to BS EN 381-7, leg protection to BS EN 381-5, and boots to BS EN ISO 17249, plus eye and hearing protection. The gloves in these kits are not that standard. SINPY reviewers said a pair failed a kitchen-knife check, and Seesii reviews call them gardening gloves. Gardeners' World notes electric saws can sit around 90 dB. That is not a measurement of these listings. Oil and tension, with the battery out, are on how to prune with a cordless saw. A dry or slack chain is how these kits throw the chain on day one.

Feet on the ground

Electrical Safety First says not to use a chainsaw from a ladder. A short bar does not make the fall smaller. A branch you cannot reach from the grass belongs on mini chainsaw vs pole saw. Stay about 15 metres, also given as 50 feet, from power lines, measured to the end of the extended tool. If the nose catches, the saw rotates towards you. On a pole, kickback arrives as a twist, so both hands stay on the shaft and you stand offset. If you can only see the cut from a ladder, stop.

The tree may be protected

In England and Wales, GOV.UK is the route for a tree preservation order and for many trees in a conservation area. Not every garden tree is covered. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not that form. The RHS trees-and-the-law note says you may cut back to the boundary from your side, you do not trespass, and the wood belongs to the tree's owner. Offer it back. A preservation order still applies. Active nests are covered by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. If you find a nest, or suspect a bat roost, you wait.

Common questions

Do you need a certificate to prune your own tree?
HSE expects a certificate for chainsaw work on or in a tree when the work is work, under the PUWER competence rules. OPSS does not describe that duty for a householder shortening growth at home. The same precautions still apply. Paid work on or in a tree is the point where the certificate is the expectation.
What should you wear if the box gloves are thin?
Gloves to BS EN 381-7, leg protection to BS EN 381-5, and boots to BS EN ISO 17249, plus eye and hearing protection. Those are the HSE chainsaw PPE references. The gloves shipped with these kits are described by reviewers as ordinary gardening gloves, including a pair that failed a knife check.
Why is a ladder a bad place for any chainsaw?
Electrical Safety First says not to use a chainsaw from a ladder. A fall and a running chain are the same hazard on a 6 inch bar as on a longer one. Use a pole from the ground, or stop.
What is kickback on a short bar?
The nose of the bar catches and throws the saw back, which is the INDG317 description. A short bar still has a nose. You keep it out of tight forks and you use both hands. A trigger lock on these listings is not a chain brake.
When do you need council consent?
In England and Wales, when the tree has a tree preservation order, and for many trees in a conservation area, using the GOV.UK protected-tree route. Not every garden tree is covered. Scotland and Northern Ireland use their own systems, which this page does not restate.
Can you cut a branch that hangs over your side of the fence?
The RHS trees-and-the-law guidance is the overview: you may cut back to the boundary from your side, you do not trespass, and you should offer the wood back because it belongs to the tree's owner. A tree preservation order still applies if there is one.
How close can a pole saw go to a power line?
About 15 metres, which Electrical Safety First also gives as 50 feet. Measure from the line to the furthest point of the extended tool, not from the line to your boots. If you cannot keep that gap, leave the branch.
