How to prune with a cordless saw

Updated: October 2026

The first afternoon with a new mini saw often ends with the chain off the bar or a flush cut into the trunk. How to prune with a cordless saw is a short sequence: battery out, oil in, chain snug, then an undercut and a cut just outside the branch collar, with both feet on the ground. This page does not rank the twelve kits on the [cordless pruning saw comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-pruning-saw). Peter F. used the RHS pruning guide, Stihl UK and Husqvarna UK notes, and amazon.co.uk review themes from 22 October 2026. Nobody here ran a timed cut. Set the saw before you approach the tree

Take the battery off before you fill or tension. Several kits ship an empty oil bottle, so buy bar-and-chain oil, not engine oil. A manual oiler needs a pump. An automatic oiler still runs dry if the tank was never filled. These listings document a lockout, not a chain brake. New chains loosen as they bed in. Too loose, and the chain leaves the bar. SINPY's first session threw the chain and broke the front cover because the manual did not show the tension stud. Follow that diagram with the battery removed. What to wear is on chainsaw safety for a UK garden.

The cut on the branch

Take out dead, diseased and damaged wood first, and look for nests before a noisy cut. The RHS wants an undercut, then a cut from above, so the bark does not tear. Finish just outside the branch collar, the swollen ring where the branch meets the stem. A flush cut removes that protective zone. Keep both feet on the ground and stand so the piece falls away from you. A limb near the 6 inch mark is already the top of what these short bars are described as doing. Support the branch so its weight does not pinch the chain. The RHS limit of about one fifth of the canopy in a year is horticultural advice, not a statute.

When the chain stalls or jumps off

GAEEP's notes describe a chain that jammed on hedge shoots under 0.5 cm. Battery out first. Clear twigs from the bar and check that oil is on the chain. A dry chain and a slack chain are the week-one faults. If the cover is cracked, as in the SINPY session, stop for the day. Kickback is the bar nose throwing the saw back. Keep the nose out of a closed fork. Electrical Safety First wants both hands, and a chain brake where the saw has one. Yours may only have the lockout. Gardeners' World still treats both hands as the safer hold.

When this is no longer a garden cut

Stop when the next cut needs a ladder. A pole for a high branch you can drop clear is mini chainsaw vs pole saw, not this saw held overhead. Stop when the stem is a trunk, the wood is hung up, or you cannot see the landing. Stop for a nest. The RHS points at the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and the same caution applies to a suspected bat roost. England and Wales use a tree preservation order or a conservation-area notice. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not that form. A cracked cover means the battery goes back on the shelf.

Common questions

Where do you cut a branch so the tree can close the wound?
Just outside the branch collar, after an undercut and a top cut, so the bark does not tear. The RHS describes that collar as the tree's protective zone. A flush cut into the trunk removes it. This is not a promise of how fast the wound closes.
What oil goes in a mini chainsaw?
Bar-and-chain oil. Many of these amazon.co.uk kits include an empty bottle or a bottle a reviewer found nearly empty. Fill it with the battery removed. Do not wait for an automatic oiler to oil a dry chain on its own.
How tight should the chain be before you start?
Tight enough that it stays on the bar, and no tighter than your manual shows, set with the battery out. A new chain loosens after the first cuts, so you check again. Too loose, and the chain leaves the bar. There is no single gap that fits every model here.
What do you do if the chain comes off?
Battery off, then look at the cover. If the guard is cracked, stop. Clear debris from the bar, follow that saw's tension diagram, and test on scrap. SINPY reviewers met this on day one when the instructions skipped the tension stud.
Can you use the saw one-handed?
Some listings claim it, and at least one review describes it. Both hands are still the safer hold, which is the Gardeners' World line on mini saws. A one-handed title is not a safety feature. Use the auxiliary handle when the kit has one.
How much of the crown can you remove in a year?
The RHS advises no more than about one fifth of the canopy in a year. That is horticultural guidance in their pruning guide, not a measurement you take with the saw running. If the tree would be stripped, leave the rest.
When should you stop and call someone?
When you need a ladder, when the stem is large or hung up, when a nest or bat roost may be present, or when the tree may be protected. A cracked cover or a chain that will not stay on is a stop as well, before you call anyone about the tree.
