Oscillating multi tool vs rotary tool

Updated: October 2026

You searched for a cordless multi tool and the results show both a DeWalt-style head and a Dremel. The names overlap. The motion does not. A rotary pen will not flush a nail in a door jamb, and an oscillating head will not engrave a ring. This page is only that split, using the eleven amazon.co.uk rows in the [cordless multi tool comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-multi-tool). Peter F. read those listings on 22 October 2026 and did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Battery direction, including one-way kits, stays on the platform page rather than here.

What each tool actually moves

An oscillating tool swings the accessory through a small arc. The blade does not spin like a saw disc, so it can work up to an edge or flush with a surface. A rotary tool spins a bit in a collet, which suits engraving, polishing and a tight sanding spot. Do not treat a printed 4° as a measured vibration figure. A WOSIFUPO review says it vibrated. The DeWalt row does not print an angle at all.

Jobs that belong on the oscillating head

The oscillating rows are the DeWalt DCS355N, the Enventor, the YEARTOP, the byczone, the WOSIFUPO, the Normodic and the Smrbatbauy. The jobs named are jambs, skirting, plasterboard, PVC, flush nails, sanding and scraping. The Enventor bullet is tighter: plunge cuts only on soft wood and plastic. If you are undercutting a jamb so a thicker floor will slide under, the offcut-gauge steps are on the how to use page. The WOSIFUPO limits itself to low-intensity sawing, sanding and trim. Who should buy which row is the best cordless multi tool page.

Jobs that belong on the rotary tool

The rotary rows are the Dremel 8240, the 8150, the Lite and the AOZOY. The Lite, at about £53.60, is 3.6 V and 274 g, with 4.6 from 1,452 reviews. Reviews say it slows on light contact. That is short, light contact, not a sustained cut. The 8150 at about £67.15 is brushless 7.2 V, and one UK review says it does not run while charging. The 8240 at about £94.94 is 5,000–35,000 RPM with five accessories, and the bullets say the pack works with the Bosch 12 V system. It is still a spinning collet. The AOZOY at about £15.47 says it is not for large or heavy projects. A door-catch recess can suit it. A gate does not.

If you can buy only one

Buy the oscillating tool for a jamb, skirting, a flush nail, plasterboard or a plastic pipe. In this table that is the DeWalt bare body if you already own 18 V XR packs, or the Enventor kit at about £69.99 if you need a battery and charger in the carton. Buy the rotary tool for engraving, polishing, a model or jewellery. That is the Lite if you want 1,452 reviews, the 8150 if you want the brushless 7.2 V kit, or the 8240 if you want 35,000 RPM. You need both only when both jobs exist. The £15 mini rotary is not a substitute for a jamb. Bare versus kit is on the buying guide.

Common questions

Can the Lite replace an oscillating tool if I only buy one?
Only if your jobs are the Lite’s jobs. At about £53.60 it has 4.6 from 1,452 reviews for detail work, and the same reviews say it slows when you keep contact. It will not undercut a jamb. If the one purchase is a floor, buy an oscillating kit or a bare body you can already power.
Is the 12 V 8240 still a rotary tool?
Yes. It is about £94.94, with a 12 V 2 Ah battery, a charger and five accessories, and the speed band is 5,000–35,000 RPM. The listing says the pack is compatible with the Bosch 12 V system. Reviews call it expensive and hot on material that is too thick. None of that turns the collet into an oscillating blade. Use it for a faster cordless Dremel, not for skirting cut flush.
Will the £15 mini rotary trim a gate?
No. The AOZOY listing says it is not for large or heavy projects. Trimming a gate showed up in a review of the byczone oscillating kit, which is a different machine. The mini rotary’s reviews are models, jewellery and a small door-catch recess, alongside bits that come loose. A gate is a longer timber cut and belongs on an oscillating head.
Do I ever need both?
You need both when you have both jobs: renovation cuts on timber and plastic, and fine spinning work on small parts. The oscillating tool is clumsy for engraving, and the rotary pen does not flush a nail or undercut a jamb. If you can only buy one this month, buy the motion for the job you cannot postpone. A floor fitting does not need a 64-piece mini rotary claim.
Which page tells me about the battery?
Not this one. Whether the DeWalt row includes a pack, whether a YEARTOP battery may go on a Makita charger, and what to do if a body does not click, are platform questions. Prices stay on the main comparison. Use the buying guide if you have not ordered the checks yet, and the best-of page if you already know the motion and the packs you own.
