Strimmer line or blade

Updated: October 2026

You are choosing a cordless strimmer and the titles mix nylon, plastic knives, and a metal saw as if they were the same head. They are not. Strimmer line or blade is the decision that decides whether the tool can touch a path. Metal looks stronger and is the wrong cutter against paving, because it kicks where line frays. Width and scores stay on the [cordless grass trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-grass-trimmer). Three cutters, not two

The titles collapse three cutters into one word. Nylon line is a flexible string. Plastic blades are stiff knives that can fold or snap. Metal blades, including circular saws, are a rigid cutter, closer to a brush cutter than a lawn trimmer. Grit still leaves the head, and safety glasses still apply. Nylon does not spark on stone the way a rigid blade can. Plastic can snap. Metal belongs on dense weeds and on a machine built for them. The path in front of your house picks the cutter before the price does.

Against a path or a wall

Against paving, a kerb, or a wall, you want the cutter that gives way. Nylon line wears down or breaks. A metal blade can kick the tool when it strikes stone. In this set the nylon listings are the Bosch EasyGrassCut 18V-26, 26 cm, line feed on trigger release, and the WORX WG163E, 30 cm, 1.65 mm Command Feed. Bosch line diameter is not in the saved file. Bosch is the line tool if you already own 18 V packs. WORX is the line tool if you want the edger wheel and a charger in the story, with the battery-count conflict left as printed. It is the cutter those listings sell, not a test on your brick.

Plastic blades for light grass

Plastic blades sit between line and metal. Both Einhell GC-CT 18/24 Li listings use them: the body-only tool at about £48.43, with 20 knives stated, and the kit at about £51.54 with one 2.0 Ah pack. The width is 24 cm. They suit light grass in the open, where you are not trimming against a wall. Plastic snaps or folds on a solid object. A flower bed with soft growth is a fair job. A path edge full of gravel is not. One review of the Jwdj kit says a plastic blade digs in on the ground, which that reviewer contrasts with nylon. One Einhell kit review could not fit the protector shield. A plastic blade without a guard is not a workaround.

Metal blades and the kits that add a saw

Metal belongs on dense growth, away from hard surfaces, on a machine meant to hold that blade. The Jwdj at about £27.86 lists plastic blades, S-shaped metal blades, ropes, and a circular saw, on a 120 mm cell. The LEEIKOO lists metal blades and saw blades. One LEEIKOO review says a blade kept working loose on a nettle patch. One review of the black Jwdj says the metal blade comes loose but does not come off. Each is one review, not a rate. Stop if a metal blade loosens. Schedule 4 paragraph 33 of the outdoor noise regulations defines a lawn trimmer by a non-metallic cutter. A metal blade is outside that definition. That does not make every metal kit illegal. Marking is the seller’s duty.

Which to buy for a normal lawn edge

For a normal edge against paving, buy a nylon listing. That is the Bosch if you already have Bosch 18 V packs, or the WORX if you want the wheel and a named charger and you accept the 3.87 kg weight cell. For light grass in the open, buy Einhell plastic blades: the body only if a Power X-Change pack is already on the shelf, the kit if it is not. Metal kits are only for growth away from hard surfaces, and you stop if the blade loosens. How to hold the head is on how to use a cordless strimmer.

Common questions

Should I buy line or plastic blades for lawn edges?
Buy line if the edge meets paving, a wall, or stones. The Bosch and the WORX are the nylon listings in this set. Buy plastic blades if the grass is light and in the open. That is the Einhell pair, at 24 cm. Plastic still snaps on a solid object.
When is a metal blade the right tool?
When the growth is brambles or woody weeds, away from stone, on a machine built to take that blade. A circular saw packed with a kit near £30 is not that machine by itself. If the blade loosens, as in the LEEIKOO and black Jwdj reviews, you stop.
Will line damage a wall?
Line wears itself down against a wall more readily than it chips the wall the way a rigid blade can. This page does not claim a test on your brick, and it does not claim line is harmless. Glasses stay on, because the head still throws grit.
Do plastic blades snap?
They can. Trade guides describe plastic blades folding or snapping on solid objects. In this set the Einhell knives are that cutter, and one cheaper-kit review says a plastic blade digs in on the ground. Keep them for light grass, and keep the guard on.
Is a circular saw blade in the box a bonus?
It is an extra cutter, not a bonus for a lawn edge. The Jwdj, LEEIKOO, and similar kits list saw blades beside plastic and metal. A saw against a path is the kick and the loose-blade risk. Use it only away from hard surfaces, and stop if it will not stay tight.
