How to use a cordless strimmer

Updated: October 2026

You have the trimmer out of the box, the lawn edge is shaggy, and the first pass is where most of the damage happens. The head scalps a stripe into the turf, throws grit, or clogs because the guard came off. This page is how to use a cordless strimmer so the first edge stays straight and the guard stays on. Model choice stays on the [cordless grass trimmer comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-grass-trimmer). Peter F., October 2026, from UK maker guides and the saved amazon.co.uk reviews. Before the battery goes on

Set the tool up before the pack clicks home, because a live head is the wrong time to fit a guard. Walk the edge and pick up stones, toys, and anything a spinning line or blade can throw. Fit the guard so it sits between the cutter and your legs. STIHL UK still wants safety glasses on a nylon head. A visor on its own does not protect your eyes. If a shield will not fit, stop. One review of the Einhell kit says the protector would not attach and the trimmer was used without it. That is a reason to stop. The battery stays off until the guard is on.

Height and the ordinary cut

Hold the head so the cutter just clears the turf. On nylon, the tip of the line does the cutting. If you bury the head, you scalp a crescent and wear the line out against soil. Start on a straight, already-mown edge. If the line is too long it slaps the guard. Feed a little, on the Bosch by releasing the trigger, on the WORX with the Command Feed button. Plastic blades do not feed. A low blade digs where a short line would only fray. Which listings are line and which are knives is on strimmer line or blade.

Edging along a path

Edging is a different head position, not a faster version of the flat cut. For nylon, rotate the head so the line is vertical and walk so debris throws away from you. A wheel, where the tool has one, belongs on the path so the height stays constant. Bosch edging is a click and a twist, with no wheel listed. WORX includes an edger wheel. The Einhell body claims a head at plus or minus 90 degrees. Several cheaper kits do not name an edge mode. Take a short pass and look back before you cut a metre of scallops. Choosing the tool for this motion is the cordless grass trimmer buying guide.

Long grass, plastic blades, and a clogged guard

Long grass is cut from the top in passes, not from the soil upwards in one bite. Take the tips, step in, and take the next layer. Wet grass stalls the motor and packs under the guard. If the guard clogs, switch the tool off and take the battery off before your fingers go near the head. One Highlandhue review says long grass packed under the guard and the head started to smoke until it was cleared. The answer is a thinner pass and a clear guard, not a missing guard. Metal blades in the cheap kits do not fray on a stone the way line does.

When to stop

Stop when the head smokes, when a metal blade works loose, or when a charger sparks, smells, or gets hot in your hand. On the LEEIKOO file, one review says a blade kept working loose on a nettle patch. On the black Jwdj listing, one review says the metal blade comes loose but does not come off. On the Wrneaoch file, one review says the charger exploded when it was plugged in. Each is one review, not a failure rate, and each is enough to stop. Take the battery off before you clear a jam. Do not open a charger.

Common questions

How high should the head be?
Keep the cutter just off the turf, high enough that you are not scalping soil and low enough that the tips still meet the grass. On line, the end of the line does the work. On plastic blades there is no feed, so a head that is too low digs.
How do I edge without scalloping the lawn?
Turn the line vertical, or use the edger wheel if the tool has one, and walk a short straight pass before you commit. A wheel on the path, as on the WORX, holds height. A click-and-twist, as on the Bosch, only helps if you actually turn the head.
Can I take the guard off if grass catches?
No. Grass catching under the guard is a reason to stop, take the battery off, and clear the head. One Highlandhue review describes smoke when grass packed underneath. One Einhell kit review used the trimmer with the shield unfitted. Treat that as a stop.
What do I wear?
Wear safety glasses, sturdy shoes, and long trousers before the battery goes on. STIHL UK says a visor alone does not protect your eyes, and that still applies to nylon, which can throw grit. Ear protection belongs with a metal blade. Gloves are for handling the cutter after the battery is off.
When do I take the battery off?
Take it off before your hands go near the head: a jam, a line feed by hand, a blade check, or stones you missed. Fit the guard with the battery off at the start as well. A trigger you did not mean to pull is enough to cut a finger on a metal blade.
