Cordless grass shears for lawn edges

Updated: October 2026

The lawn is mown and a lip of grass still hangs over the patio. Cordless grass shears for lawn edges are for that lip, once it is short and dry. They do not cut a new soil face, and they do not rescue a fringe the mower has missed for a month. Mow first, clip a short dry fringe, and cut a new face with a half-moon iron. Models and prices stay on the [cordless grass shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-grass-shears). Peter F. followed the Royal Horticultural Society's lawn-edge guidance and the amazon.co.uk review themes in this set, on 22 October 2026. The fringe is not the face of the edge

Two different jobs hide in the word edge. One is the overhang: grass that lies over the paving after the mower has done the lawn. A cordless shear with the grass blade fitted can clip that. The other is the face: the vertical drop where lawn meets soil. The RHS lawn-edge guide says you redefine that face with a half-moon iron, when the soil is not sodden, to a drop of about 7.5 cm (3 in). That 7.5 cm is a depth of soil, not a setting on the shear. If the border has crept in, do the iron first, then use the shear to keep the overhang off the new face. Where the grass is a bank rather than a lip, the choice is on the grass shears or a strimmer page.

Clip after you mow, on dry grass

RHS says to trim lawn edges after every mow in the growing season, passes overlapped, clippings raked away. You glide a short horizontal blade along the lip, after the mower, not instead of it. AdvancedShear reviews are the warning. The grass blade knots unless the lawn is already short. The Handy manual, for a different model, says dry grass is best and that you clear stones and wire first. If you missed a fortnight, mow or strim the length down, let it dry, and only then clip the last centimetres. A long fight with wet grass is how the teeth pack up and a free hand ends up near the blade.

Width helps the speed, not the straightness

A wider grass blade covers more lip in one pass. It does not draw a straighter line, and it does not cut soil. Printed grass widths here run from about 75 mm on the WORKPRO to 120 mm on the Ryobi included line. The Isio bullet says an 8 cm grass blade while the amazon table says 8 mm. Do not collapse those into one number. Overlap each pass. A 100 mm blade is still the wrong tool for the soil face. How to seat the blade, with the pack off, is on the how to use cordless grass shears page. Brush the clippings off the paving, or they root in the crack.

Stop when the blades are blunt or the ground is wet

A shear that folds grass is blunt, or the grass is too long. RHS notes that edging shears may need the maker's sharpener, or a professional, if the blades will not come apart. Do not invent a grind on a cartridge you cannot separate. The Enventor listing bars waterlogged ground. RHS says the same about electrical tools in the rain, and about cutting a new face when the soil is sodden. Stop if the motor runs and the teeth do not, a pattern in Yard Force and Enventor reviews, or if a blade has come off. If you are still choosing 18 V or a built-in 3.6 V cell, that is the cordless grass shears buying guide.

Common questions

Can I edge a lawn with cordless grass shears?
You can clip the overhang after you have mown, if the grass is short and dry. You cannot cut the vertical soil face with the grass blade. RHS gives that cut to a half-moon iron, about 7.5 cm deep, when the soil is not sodden. The shear maintains the fringe. The iron restores the face.
Do I still need a half-moon iron?
You need one when the edge has crept into the border and the drop has gone. A shear cannot slice a clean soil wall. RHS says you can redefine edges when the soil is not sitting wet, and to use a board if it is only slightly damp. If the edges are already crisp and you only have a weekly lip, the iron can stay in the shed.
How often should I do the fringe?
RHS says after every mow in the growing season. On a small lawn that may be weekly in May and June, and less often once growth slows. The cordless shear suits that short repeat, not a single annual rescue. If you leave it a month, mow first. Clippings come off the path each time, or they sit in the crack and grow back.
Should the grass be dry?
Yes. Dry, short grass is when these blades cut instead of folding. The Handy manual for this class of shear says dry grass is best, and AdvancedShear reviews say the head knots when the lawn is still long. The Enventor listing bars waterlogged ground. Sodden soil is a reason to leave the half-moon as well.
What if the edge has crept into the border?
Cut a new face with a half-moon iron before you bring the shear out. The grass that has rooted into the border is no longer a lip you can clip from above. Forcing the shear sideways through soil bends the blade. Once the face is back, about the 7.5 cm drop RHS describes, the weekly clip stops the creep from starting again.
Will a wider blade make a crisper line?
It will make a faster line, if you overlap the passes and the grass is short. Widths in this set run from about 75 mm to 120 mm. Straightness comes from where you walk and from a face cut with an iron, not from the extra millimetres. Ryobi reviews show the grass head still has to close, or the width does nothing.
