How to use cordless grass shears

Updated: October 2026

The blade is live as soon as the motor runs, and the booklet is often a short list of dos and don'ts. How to use cordless grass shears starts on a dry bench, with the lock-off still doing its job, before you walk to the lawn. You charge it, start it with two controls, and swap a blade only when it cannot run. Prices stay on the [cordless grass shears comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-grass-shears). The weekly fringe is on the [lawn edges](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/cordless-grass-shears/sub/cordless-grass-shears-lawn-edges) page. Charge it on a dry bench

Charge the shear indoors, on a dry bench, before you need it. The Royal Horticultural Society says not to use electrical garden tools in the rain, and to put an RCD on anything that plugs into the mains. The WORKPRO includes a USB-C cable and not a charging brick. The Bosch AdvancedShear kit includes charger AL 1810 CV with a 2.0 Ah pack. The Einhell, the Ryobi and the AdvancedShear body include neither, so you charge the pack you already own. The EasyShear included line does not name a charger. Do not charge a lithium tool on a wet patio.

Start with both controls

These shears are meant to start only when two controls are pressed, so a bump in the shed does not set the blade going. The Handy THGSS manual says to press the safety lock and then the trigger, and not to bridge the switches. Core Service's start note says the same. Those booklets are not the eleven ASINs here. They are the shared rule, and your model still has its own button. Einhell's bullets describe a two-handed safety switch. WORKPRO names a safety lock. If the spec line is silent, read the card in the box. Keep the free hand back. Gloves do not make the blade safe to touch. If you are taping the lock-off down, stop.

Swap blades only when it cannot run

Take the power off before a blade comes off the tool. On a platform shear the pack comes off the rail. On a built-in cell, release the trigger and do not hold the lock-off. Wear gloves, click the blade until it seats, then tug it. A blade that lifts off is not fitted. EasyShear owners used a customer video because the paper steps did not match. One WORKPRO review could not line the click up. A POSENPRO 7.2 V review says the blade panel broke on a second use, and Ryobi reviews include a grass blade that drops off. If the blade has come off, or the housing is cracked, stop and do not open the housing. Whether both blades and a charger were in the box is in the buying guide.

Cut dry and short, then cover the blade

Use the grass blade on grass that is already short and dry. The Handy manual says to glide it above the lawn, on dry grass, after you clear stones and wire. AdvancedShear reviews say the grass head knots unless the lawn is already short. The Enventor bullets say not to use that model on waterlogged ground. If the motor runs and the blades do not move, take the pack off if it has one and do not open the case. That pattern shows up on the Yard Force LH A17 and on the Enventor, followed by a return. Brush the blades, let them dry, and fit the cover. A removable pack comes off the tool. Neither belongs in the household bin when it dies. Long grass on a bank is the grass shears or a strimmer page.

Common questions

How do I start it without it jumping?
Press the safety lock and the trigger together, and release the trigger to stop. Do not tape the lock so it stays on. The Handy manual and Core Service's start note both describe that two-control start. Einhell uses a two-handed switch, which reviews say is tight for a small hand. The blades can still coast after you release the trigger.
When do I take the battery off?
Take a slide-pack off before you change a blade, clear a jam, or put the tool away. On a built-in cell you cannot remove the pack, so you release both controls and fit the blade cover instead. The EasyShear, Isio, WORKPRO, POSENPRO 7.2 V and Enventor are integrated in this set. The Einhell, Ryobi and AdvancedShear body use a separate pack that should be off the rail.
How do I swap the grass and shrub blades?
Release both controls, or remove the pack, and put gloves on. The Handy manual's pattern is two release buttons, a click, and a cover afterwards. Bosch calls its version Multi-Click. Tug the blade after it clicks. EasyShear, WORKPRO and POSENPRO 7.2 V reviews all describe a click the paper does not explain. If it will not seat, stop. A Ryobi grass blade that comes off in use is a fault, not a technique.
Should I cut wet grass?
Cut dry, short grass. The Handy manual says the shear is best on dry grass, and AdvancedShear reviews say the grass blade knots when the lawn is still long. The Enventor listing bars excessively wet or waterlogged ground. RHS advice is to keep electrical garden tools out of the rain. If you are pulling wet clumps out of the teeth by hand, switch off first.
What if the motor runs and the blades do not move?
Stop, take the pack off if it has one, and do not open the housing. Reviews on the Yard Force LH A17 and the Enventor EVHT01 describe the motor running while the blades stay still, followed by a return. One Yard Force report put that at about 15 minutes. That is a return or a repair, not a blade you oil and try again.
