How to use a Bosch cordless lawn mower on long grass

Updated: October 2026

The first cut after a wet fortnight is the one that clogs a cordless deck. Long grass, a lowest height setting, and a mulch plug fitted in a hurry are the usual mix. This is how to use a Bosch cordless lawn mower in the Rotak and EasyMower set on the [Bosch cordless lawn mower comparison](/hub/lawn-and-garden-equipment/bosch-cordless-lawn-mower): charge the pack, set a high cut, and take the battery out before you touch the blade. Peter F. used the ROTAK18V-32 instructions and the UK review notes, updated 22 October 2026. We did not mow a test lawn. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Charge, fit the pack, and start

Give the pack a full charge before the first cut, including a battery that arrived in a kit. The 32 cm and 34 cm Rotak kits use one 18 V 4.0 Ah pack and an AL 18V-44. The EasyMower uses a 4.0 Ah PBA pack and an AL 1830. The 38 cm and 43 cm kits are 18V2 machines, with two 18 V 4.0 Ah packs and an AL 2X18V-88. UK reviews of the 43 cm kit say both packs have to be fitted before the mower will run. Do not force a blue professional pack into a green slot. The ROTAK18V-32 instructions say the blade keeps turning for a few seconds after switch-off. Wait for that coast before you tip the mower or reach under the deck. If the battery release will not move, treat it as a fault rather than levering the pack out.

Set the height before you drop to the lowest step

The Rotak 32 cm and 34 cm titles print 25–65 mm. The 38 cm and 43 cm titles print 30–75 mm. The EasyMower cells print 0.2 cm to 60 cm over three positions. Bosch and Which? describe that model as 20–60 mm. Use the millimetre band, and do not treat 60 centimetres on the amazon cell as a cutting height. The ROTAK18V-32 instructions say to take about a third of the grass, ideally no more than 10–20 mm, in one pass. On a lawn that has been left, start on a high setting. If the height spring will not move, do not stand on the deck to force it. The manual’s area example is for very thin, dry grass only: up to 150 m² on a 4.0 Ah pack for the 32 cm model and up to 200 m² for the 34 cm model.

Bag or mulch plug

The 32 cm and 34 cm titles print 35 litres. Both 38 cm titles print 40 litres. The 43 cm kit title prints 40 litres and the body title prints 50 litres, so do not quote one volume for that model. On the Rotak, mulch is a plug. Take the pack out, remove the grass bag, slide the adapter into the opening, and close the flap. Mulching suits dry, short grass. The EasyMower listing does not state a plug, and Which? marks mulching no. Stop if the plug is in the blade’s path. One new 43 cm kit had the mulch box hit by the blade when the power was on. Switch off, remove the packs, and contact the seller. The small garden page is where you choose between these 32 cm mowers.

Store it, and when to stop

Clear wet clippings off the deck with the pack already out and the blade still. The 34 cm listings state foldable handles and vertical storage. UK reviews say the knobs are fiddly, that folding means removing them, and that they do not tighten properly. The EasyMower states a folding top handle. Vertical storage is not stated on the 32 cm, 38 cm or 43 cm listings. Stop and use the seller, or a repairer they name, if the handle control does not kill the motor, if the blade hits the mulch plug, or if a pack or charger fails. Do not open a pack.

Common questions

How do you fit the Bosch Rotak mulch plug?
Take the pack out and wait until the blade has stopped. Remove the grass bag, slide the adapter into the opening, and close the flap. That is the ROTAK18V-32 sequence. Mulch suits dry, short grass. The EasyMower listing does not state a plug.
What height should the first cut use?
Use a high step and take about a third of the grass, ideally no more than 10–20 mm. The 32 cm and 34 cm titles run from 25–65 mm. The 38 cm and 43 cm titles run from 30–75 mm. Reviewers dislike the lowest cut on long or lumpy grass.
Does the blade stop the moment you let go?
The motor should cut when you release the handle control. The blade keeps turning for a few seconds, according to the ROTAK18V-32 instructions. Wait before you reach underneath. If the control does not stop the motor, stop using the mower.
Can you store the 34 cm mower upright?
The 34 cm bullets say foldable handles and vertical storage. Reviews say the knobs are awkward and do not always tighten. The other Rotak listings here do not state upright storage. The EasyMower states a folding top handle instead.
When should you stop and contact the seller?
When the mower stalls in a way you cannot clear, the pack is too hot to refit, or the blade hits the mulch box, as on one new 43 cm kit. Remove the packs if you can do that safely. Do not open a battery. A second pack does not fix a deck packed with wet grass.
Does this cover the EasyMower’s three positions?
The three positions are on the listing. The cells that say 0.2 cm to 60 cm are not the band to follow. Bosch and Which? use 20–60 mm. Those mulch steps are from the Rotak manual and do not add a plug the EasyMower never states.
