Venus fly trap care in the UK, including a winter rest

Updated: 21 October 2026

The trap shuts on a fingertip, and the plant has spent a meal it will not get back. Venus fly trap care in the UK is the opposite of that trick: sun and rainwater from spring to autumn, then a cool, barely damp rest, with the traps left alone. Dionaea muscipula is a poor match for a permanently warm flat. None of the three kits in the [carnivorous plants comparison](/hub/houseplants/carnivorous-plants) is a flytrap already in a pot. Peter F. used RHS, Kew and UK nursery guides. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Summer on a bright sill

Give it a south-facing sill once growth starts in spring. A north window keeps the traps reluctant. The RHS care note says tap water kills them, especially hard tap. Standing a jug overnight does not soften it. Distilled water is the backup when the butt runs dry. In growth, the RHS suggests a saucer of about 1 cm, and about 0.5 cm in winter, shallower than the 2.5 cm saucer used for carnivorous plants in general. A sealed tin holds a puddle against the crown. Water for every genus is on carnivorous plant care. If it arrived in multipurpose compost, move it in the growing season, not during the winter rest.

Cut the flower if you want leaves

The RHS says to cut the flower stalk. A flytrap in a 9 cm pot spends a lot on that scape, and the traps suffer. Cut it low while it is still short if you want leaves. Leave it only if you meant to collect seed.

Do not feed it like a pet

A few insects a year are enough, and the plant can go more than three months without a catch. Do not drop in meat or fertiliser. If you offer an insect, it must be small enough for the trap to seal and still moving. One insect in one trap is the meal. Kew describes two touches within about 20 seconds. The RHS says a trap closes a maximum of three times, then that trap is finished. If you are still holding seed, the kit record is on seeds or a plant.

Winter rest without throwing it away

In January the plant often looks dead. That is dormancy if the crown is firm and the pot is cool and barely moist. Kew uses a bright, cool sill. One RHS line says put them outside until about March. Another says a cool rest above 10°C. Tom's Carnivores uses late October to March in an unheated greenhouse or shed window. Hewitt-Cooper and Wack's Wicked Plants use Halloween to Valentine's Day, roughly -5°C to 10°C, with fleece below -5°C. Do not average those figures into one optimum. The shared instruction is cool, bright enough to know day from night, and only damp. A radiator skips dormancy. Choose the spot in October. A Cape sundew does not need this winter. A flytrap does.

Common questions

How often should I feed a Venus flytrap?
A few insects a year are enough, and the plant can go more than three months without one. It does not need a weekly feed. If you offer anything, use one small insect in one trap, not meat and not fertiliser. A plant outdoors or on an open window will usually catch its own food.
Can I set the trap off with my finger?
You can, and you should not. Kew's trigger is two touches in about 20 seconds, and each pointless close spends energy. The RHS says a trap manages a maximum of three closes before that leaf is done. Poking is how a small plant loses the only traps it has, with no meal in return.
Why is it black in January?
Winter die-back is normal dormancy when the pot is cool and barely damp and the crown is still firm. Growth usually returns towards March. Black, mushy tissue in a warm, wet pot is rot. Do not throw a dormant plant away, and do not stand it on a radiator to force new leaves.
Can it live on a kitchen windowsill all year?
A bright kitchen sill is a good summer place if the light is direct and the water is rainwater. It is a bad winter place if the room stays warm. Move it in late autumn to a cool, bright, frost-sheltered spot and cut the water back. A north-facing kitchen is the wrong room in every season.
Is tap water really that bad in a hard-water area?
Yes. The RHS care note says tap water kills them, and hard water does it faster because the minerals stay in the pot. Use rainwater or distilled water. Boiled and cooled tap is only a stopgap, and minerals still build up if it becomes the habit. Overnight standing does not remove hardness.
Should I cut the flower?
Yes, if you want a stronger plant. The RHS says the flower weakens a flytrap, and on a small pot the stalk is a large cost. Cut it while it is short. Leave it only if you deliberately want seed and you accept fewer traps that season.
Will it clear the house of flies?
No. A flytrap catches a few insects a year for its own nutrition. It will not empty a kitchen, a bin store or a loft of cluster flies. Buy it as a plant with a winter routine, not as pest control. Nothing in the sources used here makes it a substitute for finding where the flies are breeding.
