Tap splitter frost damage: drain it before winter

Updated: 17.10.2026

You open the outside tap after a cold night and water sprays from a seam in the splitter instead of reaching the hose. Tap splitter frost damage usually begins with water trapped in a body, valve or seal where freezing expansion has nowhere to go. The preventive routine is to disconnect the fitting, drain it with its outlets open and store it under cover; brass needs the same care as plastic. See our [water distributor comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-distributor) when replacement is unavoidable, but do not fit another unit until you have checked whether the leak is confined to the removable splitter or comes from the fixed tap and pipework.

Why a splitter body cracks

Water remaining inside a closed splitter expands as it freezes. The resulting pressure may crack a plastic shell, open a seam in a metal body or force a valve seal out of place. The damage often becomes obvious only when the ice thaws and the tap is opened again. A product can therefore look intact during the cold spell and leak from several joints the next day. GRIFEMA buyers describe bodies bursting at the joints after being left full, including visible ice. Reviews of the Gardena 8194-20 mention side seals splitting after winter and one failure at around -6°C. A UK reviewer of the brass-claimed green HugWaFlw makes the same point: a full body can split when the water freezes. These reports demonstrate a mechanism, not a failure rate. A product that survived several winters does not make the next freeze safe. The Gardena manufacturer page marks the four-channel distributor as having no frost protection. Silence about frost on other listings is not a protection claim.

Take it off before freezing weather

Disconnect hoses, timers and splitters while you can still work safely. WaterSafe advises removing and draining hose connections before cold weather, and isolating the outside supply where the plumbing allows it. Turn off the outside supply at its isolator if one is fitted, then open the outdoor tap. Unscrew the splitter and hold it so each outlet can drain. Move every outlet valve to the open position, because a closed ball valve can retain a pocket of water. Shake a multi-way fitting gently until no more water emerges. Store the drained splitter somewhere protected from frost. A shed that freezes will not protect a fitting that still contains water. Inspect washers and O-rings while the parts are dry. Some UK trade guidance uses mid-October to mid-April as a practical storage period. Those dates are a rule of thumb: follow your local forecast.

A tap cover does not empty the splitter

An insulated tap jacket slows heat loss from the tap, but it does not remove water trapped behind closed splitter valves. A bulky manifold may also stop the cover fitting closely. Remove attachments first, drain what you can, then fit insulation to the bare tap. A frost-resistant or self-draining tap can empty only if its outlet is clear and it is installed correctly. A closed splitter on the thread may hold water where the design expects it to escape. Unscrew hoses and fittings rather than assuming the tap’s name protects every attachment. Brass handles knocks better than light plastic, but ice can still split a casting or seal. If you are replacing the fitting, our best garden tap splitter guide gives conditional picks for two hoses, four outlets and sequenced zones. Winter removal is part of ownership.

When the problem is no longer the splitter

With the supply off, remove the damaged splitter and inspect the bare tap. If the fitting is cracked but the tap stays dry when isolated, replacement may be enough. When the weather has thawed, restore water slowly and watch the tap body and the wall before attaching a new distributor. Turn the stop tap off and seek a plumber if water keeps running from the wall, a concealed pipe or a cracked fixed tap, or if you cannot operate the isolator safely. A WaterSafe-registered plumber is the route for work on the fixed system. A new splitter cannot repair a burst pipe behind masonry. Do not glue a split manifold and return it to mains pressure. Replace the fitting, then follow the washer-led steps in our tap splitter fitting guide. Test one outlet at a time.

Common questions

Must I remove the splitter, or is a tap cover enough?
Remove and drain the splitter. A cover may insulate the bare tap, but it cannot empty water held inside a manifold or behind closed valves. Attach the cover only after hoses, timers and splitters have been disconnected and the outside supply has been isolated and drained where your installation permits.
Will a brass splitter be safe with the valves shut?
No. Shut valves can trap exactly the water that needs to escape, and freezing expansion can damage brass bodies, seams and seals. Remove the splitter, open every valve, drain it fully and store it under cover. Brass improves wear resistance; it does not make a closed water-filled chamber frost-proof.
My plastic two-way burst. Was that a one-off?
It may be an individual product failure, but the mechanism is well established and similar UK reports appear across multi-way fittings. Trapped water can split plastic or metal components during a freeze. Replace the damaged pressure fitting and change the storage routine rather than assuming the next body will survive outside.
Can a frost-proof tap keep its splitter attached?
It should not. A self-draining tap needs a clear outlet to empty as designed, and an attached splitter can retain water or obstruct drainage. Follow the tap manufacturer’s instructions, but the cautious UK winter routine is to remove every hose connector, splitter and timer before freezing conditions.
What should I do if the wall is wet after a freeze?
Turn off the water at the stop tap if you can do so safely and call a plumber. Water emerging from the wall or continuing after the removable splitter is off suggests damage to the fixed tap or pipework. Do not buy another splitter and leave the supply running while investigating.
