Water distributor buying guide for UK garden taps

Updated: 17.10.2026

You have one outside tap, a hose for watering and perhaps a second line for a timer or pressure washer. A water distributor can give each job its own outlet, but only if its inlet fits the tap and its valves work the way you expect. This water distributor buying guide explains the checks to make before comparing prices: thread size, simultaneous or sequential flow, outlet count and individual shut-off. Once you know those answers, use our [water distributor comparison](/hub/hot-water/water-distributor) to compare the actual listings. The right order matters, because a four-way body with the wrong thread is no more useful than a six-zone unit without the water control it needs.

What you are buying

For this comparison, a water distributor is usually a fitting that screws onto an outside tap and turns one water supply into two, three or four controllable outlets. Most ordinary splitters allow several connected hoses to receive water at the same time. The name is not precise enough on its own. A ribbed Y-piece may split a hose without screwing onto the tap or providing shut-off valves, while a plumbing tee can use a different thread and belong in fixed pipework. The Gardena 1197-20 has six outlets but serves them sequentially when a separate water control cycles the supply.

Match the tap thread

Measure the outside diameter of the tap’s male thread rather than guessing from its familiar appearance. Hozelock’s UK guide gives about 26.44 mm across a 3/4 inch BSP thread, about 20.99 mm for 1/2 inch BSP and about 33.25 mm for 1 inch BSP. The nominal size describes the pipe system, not the diameter you see with a ruler, so a thread measuring roughly an inch across can still be 3/4 inch BSP. The GRIFEMA GE1401-2 states both 26.5 mm G 3/4 and 21 mm G 1/2. By contrast, HugWaFlw refers to European taps, while Ruayia says metric tapered rather than confirming 3/4 inch BSP. Do not force a connector that will not start squarely by hand. A similar diameter does not prove that the pitch or thread form matches, and cross-threading can damage the tap or the splitter nut.

How many outlets, and whether they run together

Choose outlet count from the jobs you genuinely perform at the same time. A two-way splitter is enough when one branch keeps a timer connected and the other remains free for a hose. Four outlets make sense for several fixed watering runs, although opening all four divides one tap’s available flow between them. More outlets do not create more water pressure. If four sprinklers perform poorly, run fewer together or use a sequenced arrangement. The Gardena 1197-20 shows why the number alone can mislead. It has six outlets but selects areas one after another as a water control stops and restarts the inlet flow. The water control is not included, and the distributor is not intended to run six hoses together. If you want several live outlets for immediate manual use, stay with a simultaneous two-, three- or four-way splitter.

A valve on each outlet

An individual valve lets you leave hoses connected while closing one branch and using another. That is useful when one outlet serves a timer and another remains free for occasional jobs. Look for an explicit valve or shut-off statement rather than assuming every branch has one. The conventional products in the comparison generally name a knob, lever or ball valve per outlet. The LEOUEANR six-pack, however, consists of ribbed three-way pieces with no shut-off stated. Those pieces may suit a matching hose layout, but they do not replace a tap splitter when you need independent control. Full-bore appears in one UK review of the green HugWaFlw, so it is buyer feedback rather than a guaranteed figure.

Check the material and the box contents

Material matters, but it comes after fit and function. Brass bodies are heavier and generally resist knocks and wear better than inexpensive plastic, while plastic can be lighter and cheaper to remove after each use. Neither material is protected from ice when water remains trapped inside. Our brass vs plastic tap splitter guide examines that trade-off and the conflicting material descriptions found on some listings. Check what the price includes. A 1/2 inch adaptor may suit an older tap, while spare washers can cure a small inlet weep. Hose connectors, end caps and brackets are separate unless named: Flintronic includes an adaptor, connectors, three washers and PTFE, whereas the Gardena 8194-20 extract does not name a bracket. The flat washer normally seals at the tap face; the thread clamps it.

Common questions

What thread is a normal UK outside tap?
Many UK outside taps use a 3/4 inch BSP male thread, measuring about 26.44 mm across the outside. Older or different taps may use 1/2 inch or another arrangement, so normal is not a substitute for measuring. Confirm both the diameter and the thread specification in the splitter listing.
Should I choose two outlets or four?
Choose two if you normally run one or two jobs and want less weight on the tap. Choose four when several hoses or timers need to remain connected, but remember that all open branches share one supply. Four outlets improve connection capacity; they do not multiply flow or pressure.
Do I need a valve on every outlet?
You do if you want to close one hose while leaving the tap and another branch running. Individual valves also let you keep several lines connected between uses. A plain Y-piece without valves is adequate only when you are happy to control the entire arrangement at the main tap or add separate shut-offs.
Will plastic Y-pieces screw onto an outside tap?
Only if the product explicitly has the correct threaded inlet. Ribbed Y-pieces such as the LEOUEANR pack are described as 1/2 inch quick-connect hose splitters, not as 3/4 inch BSP tap fittings. Do not assume that garden hose connector means it screws directly onto the bib tap.
