Runner beans vs French beans: which to sow in the UK

Updated: 21 October 2026

Two packets can both say beans and both appear in the same amazon.co.uk search. They are not two sizes of one plant. Runner beans vs French beans is a species choice, and a hot, dry British summer is the main reason to switch. This page does not rank runner varieties. Named runners are on the [best runner bean seeds](/hub/herb-seeds/runner-bean-seeds/sub/runner-bean-seeds-best) page. The listings we kept are on the [runner bean seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/runner-bean-seeds). Peter F. used the RHS allotment notes and these packets, read on 20 October 2026. Two species, not two sizes

A runner bean is Phaseolus coccineus. A French bean is Phaseolus vulgaris. Runner pods are the flat ones you slice. French pods are finer, and you usually pick them before the seeds show through the skin. Cook runner pods. Both species have dwarf forms and climbing forms, so height does not tell them apart. JustSeed Dwarf French Bean Safari, ASIN B0BKL49CWJ, 100 seeds at about £1.55, was removed from the runner results because it is Phaseolus vulgaris. A dwarf habit did not make it a short runner. Habit and string come after species. Those runner questions are on the runner bean seeds buying guide.

When the UK summer picks the species

The RHS allotment guidance treats runners as the classic British crop for a cool, wet summer, and French beans as the better choice in a warm, dry one. French beans are described as easier to prepare, with less string, and easier to sow in succession. That is not a claim that they yield more. Runner flowers drop when the roots are dry and the air is hot. Water the roots. Do not mist the flowers. If you will not water a cane row through a hot spell, French beans fit that site. If the plot is cool and damp and you want flat pods, stay with runners. Cold soil is a separate loss, on the how to sow runner beans page. Moonlight and Firestorm have French bean parentage and remain runners.

Supports, pots and picking

A cane does not identify a runner. A climbing runner wants supports about 2.5 m tall, in place before you sow. A dwarf runner needs short sticks and about 30 cm between plants. A climbing French bean still needs a frame, and a dwarf French bean does not become a runner because you skipped the canes. In this set the only dwarf is Unwins Jackpot. If you only have a pot, choose the species first. Pick runners at about 20 to 25 cm, every two or three days, and take French pods smaller. Cook runner pods. Raw pods and beans are harmful. A stringless bullet on Equator, Firestorm or Jackpot is not a reason to wait for lumpy pods.

What to buy if you stay with runners

Stay with runners when you want the flat pod, you can offer canes or a dwarf pot, and the summer is more often cool and wet. Switch to French beans for a warm, dry summer, or for a finer pod and succession sowings. A hot spell points to Moonlight or Firestorm. A patio without a 2.5 m row points to Jackpot. A traditional red flower points to Scarlet Emperor, with spare seed because the reviews disagree. Only Firestorm prints an RHS award, which is not a yield claim.

Common questions

Are runner beans and French beans the same plant?
No. Runners are Phaseolus coccineus and French beans are Phaseolus vulgaris. Both can climb or stay dwarf, which is why a seed rack mixes them up. Runner pods are the flat ones you pick at about 20 to 25 cm. French pods are finer and are usually picked smaller. A dwarf French bean is not a short runner.
Which copes better with a hot UK summer?
French beans, if you follow the RHS allotment note, in a warm, dry summer. Runners are the crop for a cool, wet one, and they drop flowers when the roots are dry and the air is hot. Moonlight and Firestorm are runners bred with French bean parentage so they set pods more reliably in heat. They are not French beans, and they still need water.
Which is easier to prepare in the kitchen?
The RHS describes French beans as easier to prepare, with less string, which is one reason to switch in a dry year. Runner pods are flat and need picking young or they toughen. Even a listing that says stringless, such as Equator or Firestorm, should be picked at about 20 to 25 cm. Cook runner pods. Raw ones are harmful.
Can a runner have French bean in its breeding and still be a runner?
Yes. Moonlight and Firestorm are that case. Tozer treats them as French-bean crosses, and the RHS cites that parentage for hot summers. They stay on the runner side of the table. Do not recategorise the packet as a French bean because of the breeding line.
Why was a dwarf French bean in the runner search?
Because the search says bean, and dwarf plants sit next to dwarf runners. JustSeed Dwarf French Bean Safari, ASIN B0BKL49CWJ, 100 seeds at about £1.55, was removed from this comparison. It is Phaseolus vulgaris. The listing was a species error in the results, not a small version of Scarlet Emperor.
If you only have a pot, which way do you go?
Choose the species first, then a dwarf if the pot is about 30 to 45 cm wide. Jackpot is the dwarf runner in this set. A dwarf French bean can use a similar pot and is still the other species. A climber, runner or French, needs a much larger, heavy container. The widths are on the pots page.
