Runner bean seeds: what to check before you buy one

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with runner bean seeds that look interchangeable, and the star lines do not tell you which plant you will get. One packet prints a count, one prints 5.0 from a single rating, and several never say whether the plant climbs. This page is the order of decisions: the job on your plot, then habit and string, then what the price buys. The [runner bean seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/runner-bean-seeds) holds the eleven listings and the shelf prices from 20 October 2026. Peter F. read those listings against the RHS grow guide and the Award of Garden Merit list. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are buying

Runner bean seeds are packets of Phaseolus coccineus, grown in Britain as a frost-tender summer crop. You eat the young green pods, cooked. A stated packet here is usually about 30 to 50 seeds, enough for a short cane row if you sow two at a station and thin to one. Moonlight is 30 seeds. Enorma and Firestorm are both 40, at about £1.65 and about £3.99. Streamline and Jackpot never state a count, so about £2.48 is not a shared amount of seed. A higher shelf price does not buy a heavier packet. The finer French pod is a different species, set out on the runner beans vs French beans page.

Habit, string and pod set

Choose the shape of the plant before you sort by stars. Almost every packet is a climber and needs supports about 2.5 m tall before you sow. The only dwarf is Unwins Jackpot, about 50 cm, with a stringless bullet. Patio widths are on the runner beans in pots page. Only Equator, Firestorm and Jackpot print stringless. Tozer marks Firestorm, Moonlight and St George semi-stringless. Pick at about 20 to 25 cm. For a hot, dry summer the RHS points to Moonlight and Firestorm, which stay Phaseolus coccineus.

Price, seed count and the award line

Shelf prices read on 20 October 2026 fall into three bands, and they will move. About £1.65 to £2.65 is the entry band, about £3.19 to £3.40 the middle, and about £3.99 for 40 seeds the top, shared by Mergoles, Polestar and Firestorm. Streamline, with no stated count, is a weak comparison next to Equator's 35 seeds at the same price. An RHS Award of Garden Merit is a trial note, not an Amazon star. The list includes Benchmaster, Firestorm, Moonlight, St George and 'Enorma' - Elite. Only Firestorm prints the award. A packet that says Enorma is not that Elite wording. The top pick is JustSeed Moonlight when you have canes and the summer may turn hot. Best value is JustSeed Enorma on pence per stated seed, if you accept a thin listing.

What to ignore on the listing

Three lines point the wrong way. Expected heights of 25 to 65 cm on a climber are catalogue noise. The RHS grows climbing runners on supports of about 2.5 m. Jackpot's 50 cm is the dwarf exception. Defra registration 7291 and organic registration AP23164 are seller statements, not certified organic seed. A small packet is normally standard seed under the Seed Marketing Regulations 2011. A 5.0 from one rating is not a germination rate. Depth and soil at about 12°C are on the how to sow runner beans page.

Common questions

Which packets actually say stringless?
Only Unwins Equator, Mr Fothergill's Firestorm and Unwins Jackpot print a stringless claim. The other eight listings do not. Tozer marks Firestorm, Moonlight and St George semi-stringless, which is a narrower word than Firestorm's bullet. Pick at about 20 to 25 cm even when the packet says stringless, because swollen pods stop the next flowers.
Which listing prints an RHS award?
Only the Firestorm listing prints an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Benchmaster, Moonlight and St George are on the RHS list and do not say so on amazon.co.uk. A packet labelled Enorma is not the same wording as 'Enorma' - Elite. Scarlet Emperor, Polestar, Streamline, Equator, Mergoles and Jackpot are not on that award list.
Is organic on a JustSeed attribute the same as organic seed?
No. Defra number 7291 and organic registration AP23164 are seller statements on the listing. They do not prove that the seed in the packet is certified organic. Garden packets of this size are normally standard seed under the Seed Marketing Regulations 2011, sold with a supplier label rather than an official quality grade.
Can the listed plant height be trusted?
Not on a climber. Heights of 25 to 65 cm on Equator, Scarlet Emperor, Streamline, Benchmaster, Firestorm and St George do not describe the plant the RHS grows on 2.5 m canes. Jackpot's 50 cm is usable because that listing is a dwarf sold for containers. Plan the frame from the habit, not from the catalogue height.
Why is a 5.0 from one rating not a reason to buy?
Jackpot is 5.0 from one rating and the file has no review text. St George is 5.0 from one review. Neither figure is a germination rate or a crop trial. Scarlet Emperor, at 4.4 from 58 reviews, shows the other risk: the comments include both good emergence and failed packets. Read the count of reviews before the stars.
When should you switch to French beans instead?
Switch when you want the other species, Phaseolus vulgaris, especially in a warm, dry summer, or when you want a finer pod and a plant that is easier to sow in succession. Runners remain the crop for a cool, wet British summer and a flat pod. Moonlight and Firestorm have French bean parentage and are still runners, not a reason to treat them as French beans.
