Petunia seeds for hanging baskets

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are filling a basket or a window box that has to spill over the rim, not a bush that sits in the middle of the liner. Petunia seeds for hanging baskets only do that job if the plants actually trail. In this amazon.co.uk set, several titles say hanging, and UK reviews say the plants grew upright. The [Petunia seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/petunia-seeds) holds the prices. This page is the container job and that review pattern. Peter F. used those listings, RHS basket guidance, and BBC Gardeners' World. He did not grow a trial basket. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a basket petunia has to do

A summer basket is a small volume of compost. The plant has to flower over the edge. If you wanted a spill, a basket photo on a dwarf packet is the usual miss. BBC Gardeners' World splits trailing types for baskets and window boxes, with stems in that group up to about 90 cm, from bushy types. Those 90 cm are a group figure. An RHS record for Surfinia Trailing Red is about 30–40 cm of spread. Explorer Purple is about 50–60 cm. Habit words are on the trailing or upright petunia seeds page.

What these listings say, and what reviewers saw

Titles that say hanging or trailing include SVI, Nika's balcony mix, Ultrey, three UIOYEWRG colour codes, and Damavand's title even though the variety is nana compacta. Just Seed calls Pirouette compact, so those named packets are a weak spill. SVI, B084VK2Y35, is about £5.99, 2.3 from seven reviews, with UK reports of plants that were not blue and not trailing. The usage field says indoor. Nika, B0DRLFW3CG, is about £2.99, 3.9 from 20 reviews, and one review says the plants were upright. Damavand, B0GMY8N997, is about £3.50, and one of two reviews said it did not look trailing. Ultrey, B07PVGRLJC, is about £5.99, 3.6 from 180 reviews. The bullet says hanging or standing, and UK reviews repeat plants that were not trailing, odd colours, and weeds or poppies. Unknown is not the same as fine.

Surfinia, seed, and late-season plugs

Surfinia is a trailing brand sold mainly as plants from cuttings. A cheap seed packet that never uses the name is not a Surfinia, even when the photo cascades. Seed can fill a basket when you sow early enough to have sturdy plants after the last frost. It cannot rescue a bracket you must dress this weekend in late May. Plugs are the calendar answer, and this page does not invent their price. You would still harden them off. If the plants are already up and clearly bushy, use them in a pot or the front of a bed.

Water, sun, and frost

The RHS notes that summer baskets may need watering every day in hot, sunny weather. Feel the compost. If it has shrunk from the liner, water until it runs, then stop. A basket that stays sodden in a dull week rots. Deadhead so the plants do not set seed and stall. Plant out after frost. A basket on a bracket is as tender as a plant in the ground: later in the north and in frost pockets, and only after about two to three weeks of hardening off. Hardy perennial on a seed title does not make the chain a winter feature.

Common questions

Can I grow a trailing basket from seed, or do I need plants?
You can grow a trailing basket from seed if you start early under cover and the packet really is a trailer. In this set, several hanging titles have UK reviews of upright plants, so seed is not a sure spill. Plants from a named trailing series are the shorter route when the basket must flower this summer. Surfinia, in particular, is sold as cuttings, not as a generic seed name.
Which listings in this set even say hanging or trailing?
SVI, Nika's balcony mix, Ultrey, and three UIOYEWRG colour codes say hanging or trailing. Damavand's title mentions baskets, while the variety is nana compacta, a dwarf bush. Just Seed Pirouette is described by the brand as compact, so do not file it as a trailer because people put petunias in baskets. UIOYEWRG has no reviews here. The others have reviews that dispute the trail.
What did buyers report when they trusted that word?
On SVI, plants that were not blue and not trailing. On Nika, germination with an upright habit. On Damavand, a basket that did not trail, plus a review of seed that never grew. On Ultrey, plants that were not trailing, limited colours, missing labels, and weeds or poppies in some reports. These are review themes, not a counted trial. They are enough to stop you treating the title as the plant.
Is nana compacta a basket plant?
It can sit in a basket as a bushy filler. It is not the plant that spills down the bracket. Damavand names nana compacta and still recommends baskets on the title. One of two reviews said it was not trailing. Use it when you want a mound in a pot. Choose a named trailing series when the rim has to disappear, and accept that this set's hanging titles are disputed.
Is a cheap seed packet a Surfinia?
No, unless the packet uses the name. Surfinia plants are raised from cuttings. A £3 or £7 bag with a cascading photo is some other petunia, or an unknown mix. RHS spread figures for Surfinia Trailing Red, about 30–40 cm, do not transfer to an unnamed listing. If the label does not say Surfinia, do not expect that plant.
How often do baskets need water?
In hot, sunny weather the RHS says summer baskets may need water every day. A small liner dries faster than a bed. In a cool, wet week, daily water will rot the crown. Check the compost with a finger. Full sun produces more flowers and also the thirst. A basket under a deep porch still needs water. It does not need a saucer left full.
What if I need the basket in flower this summer and it is already May?
Buy plants, not seed. A sowing in May will not dress a bracket for the late-spring bank holidays. Harden the plants off and plant after frost where you live. Keep any seed packet for next February under cover. A hanging title with no review file is a poor emergency purchase at about £7.75 when the basket has to look finished now.
