Petunia seeds UK: what the packet should show

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a basket photo, a seed count in the thousands, and a checkout button. The packet may still not say which petunia you will grow. Petunia seeds UK shoppers actually need are the ones that name the flower, the habit, and whether the seed is pelleted, at a price you can compare in pounds. This guide is the checklist. The [Petunia seeds comparison](/hub/herb-seeds/petunia-seeds) holds the twelve listings and the prices. Peter F. read those listings and public UK growing guides. He did not run a germination trial. What a useful packet shows

A useful envelope names a variety you could reorder, a supplier, the seed form, a count, and the habit. Double Pirouette is a variety name. The letter A, or blue 2, is a colour code. In this set only the two Just Seed packets, both at about £2.25 for 30 pelleted seeds, print a variety and a part number. Habit is the shape, not the container. Nana compacta is a dwarf, bushy class. A basket in the photo does not prove which one is in the bag. Just Seed's own shop describes Pirouette as compact, with flowers about 10–13 cm. Surfinia is raised from cuttings, and a seed bag that never uses the name is not that plant. Ornamental seed sits outside the Seed Marketing Regulations 2011. It should still match its description under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

Counts and the listings that disagree with themselves

Thirty named pellets you can space are often a clearer purchase than a stated 2,500 or 25,000 unnamed seeds, because you know the flower. Petunia seed is dust-fine. Watch the unit-count field beside the title. Nika says 2,500 on the title and 300 in the number of items. Damavand's nana compacta title says 1,000 seeds and the unit count says 1. Several colour-code titles say 25,000 while the unit count is 1. When they clash, you have two claims, not a seed count. Six listings have no star line. Do not invent a rating. A 3.9 from 77 reviews on a named packet is not proof that an unreviewed title will behave the same way.

Pellets, F1 seed, and hardy wording

A pellet is a clay coat around a tiny seed so you can place one at a time. Do not soak it until the coat dissolves. Sow it on the surface and let moisture soften it. Raw seed is easy to sow too thickly. Depth and temperature sit on the how to sow petunia seeds page. One listing tells you to sow an inch deep. UK guides say leave the seed uncovered. F1 seed is bred for a uniform flower in the year you sow it. Saved seed often does not match. Hardy perennial on a title is a trap: petunias are frost-tender annuals in the UK. RHS H2 on trailing cultivars checked here means about 1–5°C, not a freeze. DEFRA 7291 and organic registration AP23164 are numbers in the Just Seed bullets, not a germination trial.

A checklist before you add to basket

You want a variety or a clear class such as nana compacta, pelleted or untreated in plain words, one seed count the unit field does not contradict, and a habit that matches the pot. If the colour is a single letter, stop. If the same page says hanging and standing, it has not chosen. If the price is £6 or more and there is no star line, you are paying extra for a photograph. The named pellet at about £2.25 is the identifiable buy for a compact double, and a weak buy when the basket must spill. Do not eat the seed or the plants. If it is already late May, buy plants.

Common questions

What should be printed on a petunia packet before I pay?
Look for a variety or a class name, the supplier, whether the seed is pelleted or raw, one count, and the habit. A basket photo and a five-figure count do not replace those lines. In this amazon.co.uk set, the two Just Seed packets at about £2.25 are the ones that name a variety and a part number. A colour letter is not a variety. If the unit count contradicts the title, treat the quantity as unknown.
Is a bigger seed count always a better buy?
No. Thirty named pellets can be a clearer purchase than a stated 2,500 or 25,000 unnamed seeds, because you know the flower and you can space the pellets. Several titles here clash with their own unit count, so the large number is not verified. Petunia seed is very fine. You will not confirm a huge count by eye, and no germination percentage is printed for these listings.
What is pelleted seed, and should I soak it?
A pellet is a coat around one tiny seed so you can sow it singly on the compost surface. Do not soak it until the coat falls apart. Water the compost and let the pellet soften in place. Raw seed has no coat and is easy to sow too thickly. The sowing temperature and the do-not-cover rule are on the how-to page, not a reason to dissolve the pellet in a cup first.
Does DEFRA 7291 mean this envelope was tested?
No. On the Just Seed listing, DEFRA registered 7291 and organic registration AP23164 are numbers printed in the bullets. They are not a germination percentage and not a garden trial of that batch. UK reviews on the same packets mention both successful germination and empty or failed packets. Read the reviews beside the number. Ornamental seed is also outside the agricultural seed-marketing rules.
Will seed I save next year match the flower?
Often it will not, especially from a hybrid or F1 packet. Saved seed can throw different colours and shapes. If you need the same double again, buy the named packet again. An unnamed mix gives you even less to match.
Are these culinary herb seeds?
No. Petunia is ornamental summer bedding. Do not eat the seed or the flowers. The plants are frost tender in the UK. If a title says hardy perennial, that wording is not a kitchen claim or a winter plan. H2 on trailing cultivars checked here means about 1–5°C, not survival of a frost, and a USDA zone on a listing is the wrong map.
