4.7 cm or 19 cm privacy strips: match your opening

Updated: October 2026

The carton in your hand says privacy tape, and the narrow one may also say double rod, which makes the two widths look like the same fence. They are not. 4.7 cm or 19 cm privacy strips is a choice you make from the opening you measured, before length, colour or price. The five rolls are listed on the [privacy strips comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/privacy-strips). This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using amazon.co.uk prices from 19 October 2026. We did not measure a VOUNOT strip inside a 20 cm gap in a lab. When the opening is about 20 cm

Measure the clear gap between the horizontal wires. If that gap is about 20 cm, the retail match in this set is the 19 cm roll. SONGMICS GPJ035H is charcoal PVC, 19 cm by 35 m, 25 clips, about £21.60. The bullets claim a 20 cm grid on iron fences, industrial fences and balcony railings, and they claim 450 g/m². Fenceonline sell 19 cm braided tape for an opening of about 20 cm on twin-wire and V-mesh, and they say you can weave every gap or only the bands at eye level. Blumfeldt's UK page sells a 50 m by 19 cm strip, also at 450 g/m², stated for 20 cm bar spacing. That page's price is a different shop and not an ASIN here. The width class is the point. A 4.7 cm roll does not become the alternative because it costs less on the day. Four VOUNOT listings share that narrow width. None of them states a 20 cm mesh. A title that mentions double rod does not add the centimetres the tape does not have. You can leave some 20 cm gaps empty to cut the screened area, and you still fill the gaps you choose with 19 cm tape.

When the mesh is tighter than that

A 4.7 cm strip is for an opening much smaller than 20 cm, which you have already measured, not for a cheaper pass at the same twin-wire panel. The four narrow rolls differ by length and colour. Green 75 m is about £15.47 with 150 clips. Black 75 m is about £29.99 with 150 clips. Grey 150 m is about £40.49 with 300 clips. Black 300 m is about £84.99, and its dimensions line also says 47 mm, which is the same 4.7 cm, not a second width. All four say most standard fences and steel grids. None gives a mesh size. QUEST describe a 4.75 cm strip of their own for the embossed centre of a panel, for a vertical weave, or for narrower meshes on balcony railings, pens and screens. Their 19 cm tape is the separate product for standard panels. That description is useful as a picture of what a narrow strip is sold to do. It is not evidence that a VOUNOT clip fits the same wire. UK reviews on the VOUNOT files include returns where the clips only suited a thin gate or a tiny frame. The short green roll is the one to try on a single bay if your opening really is in that tighter class. If the clip misses, a 150 m or 300 m carton is the wrong next step.

The price per metre is not the comparison

On 19 October 2026 the green narrow roll is about £15.47 for 75 m, about £0.21 per metre of 4.7 cm tape. The SONGMICS roll is about £21.60 for 35 m, about £0.62 per metre of 19 cm tape. Putting those two figures in one sentence without the widths makes the green roll look like a saving. It is a saving only if you already needed 4.7 cm tape. A 75 m narrow roll does not cover more of a 20 cm fence than a 35 m wide roll. It covers more length of a thinner strip. One wide band fills one wide gap. Several narrow bands in a wide gap leave strips of mesh, and they are not how these wide rolls are sold. The black 75 m roll at about £29.99 is the same width as the green one and costs more per metre, so colour is the reason to pick it, not coverage. The grey and black long rolls are also 4.7 cm. Their lower-looking price per metre against the 19 cm roll is the same false comparison.

Common questions

What width fills a 20 cm twin-wire gap?
The 19 cm strip. In this set that is SONGMICS GPJ035H, whose bullets claim a 20 cm grid, at about £21.60 for 35 m. Fenceonline use the same width for an opening of about 20 cm. A 4.7 cm roll leaves most of that gap open, however long the carton is.
What is 4.7 cm tape for?
A tighter mesh you have measured, such as a narrow balcony grid or a small opening where a 19 cm band will not enter. QUEST describe their own 4.75 cm tape for embossing, vertical runs and narrower screens. The VOUNOT rolls do not state a mesh size, so a short bay is the check, not the product title.
Why does a 4.7 cm title say double rod?
Because the listing says so. Trade pages that specialise in twin-wire sell 19 cm tape for an opening of about 20 cm, and they do not treat 4.7 cm as the double-rod fill. A phrase on a title is not a measured gap. Use the centimetres on the width line and the gap on your fence.
Is the cheaper green roll better value than the 19 cm roll?
Only if you needed 4.7 cm tape. About £0.21 per metre is 75 m of narrow strip at about £15.47. About £0.62 per metre is 35 m of wide strip at about £21.60. The green roll is the lowest shelf price in the set. It is not a cheaper way to fill a 20 cm gap.
Can you use the narrow roll on a balcony railing?
Only when the railing mesh is in the tighter class, not when the bars are about 20 cm apart. SONGMICS is the roll whose bullets name balcony railings with a 20 cm grid. A 4.7 cm strip on a wide balcony gap will not close the view. Check the clips on one bay before you buy a long narrow roll.
What should you buy for chain link?
A slat made for the diamond, fitted the way that product describes. These PVC braids are sold for mesh with a slot you can weave through. A 46 mm chain-link insert from another shop is a different part. Do not transfer another brand's privacy percentage onto these rolls.
Can you mix one wide band and narrow bands on the same panel?
You can leave some wide gaps empty, and Fenceonline describe weaving only at eye level. Mixing 4.7 cm offcuts into a 20 cm gap is not the same thing. The narrow strip does not span that opening. Use one width for the openings you have measured, and buy length only after that.
