Privacy strips buying guide: width before the price

Updated: October 2026

You already have a metal mesh fence, and the roll lengths on amazon.co.uk look as if they might be the length of the boundary. They are not. This privacy strips buying guide is the order we use before any of the five rolls on the [privacy strips comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/privacy-strips): measure the opening and the wire, count the gaps you will fill, check the clips, match the colour, and only then compare price per metre of the same width. This page is from the Products Compared editorial team, using amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026 and public UK sources, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Measure the opening and the wire

The first measurement is the clear gap the tape has to sit in, not the height of the panel and not the length of the garden. Fenceonline sells 19 cm braided tape for an opening of about 20 cm on twin-wire and V-mesh. In this set, that width is the SONGMICS GPJ035H roll, 19 cm by 35 m, whose bullets claim a 20 cm grid, at about £21.60 with 25 clips. The four VOUNOT rolls are all 4.7 cm, and none of them states a mesh size. A 4.7 cm strip does not fill a 20 cm twin-wire gap. A title saying double rod is not a measured fit. Measure the wire as well. First Fence sells its own end clips at 190 mm by 15 mm for mesh of about 5 mm or 6 mm. Those clips are not in the VOUNOT or SONGMICS boxes.

Buy metres of tape, not metres of fence

One band covers one horizontal gap for the length of the run, plus an offcut at each end. Metres of tape are the run length times the number of gaps you fill. A 35 m SONGMICS roll is therefore not 35 m of full-height fence. Fenceonline's own examples for a different 19 cm roll, not this ASIN, run from about 10 m of tape on a 103 cm panel to about 20 m on a 203 cm panel. Treat those figures as that supplier's coverage, not a promise for GPJ035H. A Wovar 19 cm by 50 m roll is advertised as 9.5 m². That figure is tape area, 0.19 m times 50 m, not square metres of garden screened and not metres of fence.

Check the clips against the wire you have

Clip counts in this set are not interchangeable. SONGMICS includes 25 clips with 35 m. The green 75 m roll and the black 75 m roll each state 150 clips, and both the specification bullet and the included-components line agree. The grey 150 m roll states 300 clips on both lines. The black 300 m roll does not agree with itself: the title and the specification bullet say 600 fastening clips, and included components say one strip and 300 mounting brackets. You cannot quote a single clip count for that ASIN. UK reviews on the shared VOUNOT sample split on the clips. One calls the clips sturdy. Another says they were very small, suited only a thin gate, and were returned.

Colour, then price per metre of the same width

None of these titles states a RAL code. SONGMICS is charcoal. VOUNOT is green on the 75 m entry roll, black on the 75 m and 300 m rolls, and grey on the 150 m roll. Match the coating you can see on the fence. Price comes last, and only inside one width. On 19 October 2026 the green 75 m roll is about £15.47, about £0.21 per metre of 4.7 cm tape. The black 75 m roll is about £29.99 for the same length and width. The grey 150 m roll is about £40.49, about £0.27 per metre. The black 300 m roll is about £84.99, about £0.28 per metre. The 19 cm SONGMICS roll is about £21.60 for 35 m, about £0.62 per metre of wide tape. That is not a like-for-like saving against the green roll, because 4.7 cm does not do the job of 19 cm. If the boundary is open or already tall, height and wind sit on privacy strips, wind and fence height.

Common questions

What do you measure before you buy privacy strips?
Measure the clear opening the tape must fill, then the thickness of the wire the clip has to grip. A panel height and a garden length do not tell you whether 19 cm tape or 4.7 cm tape belongs there. Write both figures down before you compare rolls. The listings in this set either claim a 20 cm grid or give no mesh size at all.
Will a 4.7 cm roll fill a 20 cm twin-wire gap?
No. The VOUNOT rolls are 4.7 cm, and their pages say most standard fences and steel grids without stating a 20 cm opening. The 19 cm SONGMICS roll is the one whose bullets claim a 20 cm grid. A longer 4.7 cm roll is more of the same narrow tape, not a wider cover for that gap.
How do you turn fence length into metres of tape?
Multiply the run you will cover by the number of horizontal gaps you will fill, then add an offcut at each end. One band serves one gap. A 35 m roll is not 35 m of full-height fence. Figures such as 9.5 m² on a trade listing are tape area, width times length, not screened garden.
How many clips should be in the box?
Use the count that appears twice. SONGMICS states 25. The green and black 75 m VOUNOT rolls state 150. The grey 150 m roll states 300. The black 300 m page says 600 in the title and 300 brackets in included components, so that pack has no single agreed number.
Can you compare price per metre across the two widths?
Only as a warning. About £0.21 per metre is the green 4.7 cm tape at about £15.47 for 75 m. About £0.62 per metre is the 19 cm tape at about £21.60 for 35 m. Those are different products. Compare price per metre after you have already chosen the width that matches the opening.
Which colours are in this set, and is a RAL code stated?
Charcoal on the SONGMICS roll, and green, grey or black on the VOUNOT rolls. None of these titles states a RAL code. Match the coating you can see. A shop page that prints RAL 7016 is a different product from these amazon.co.uk listings.
What should you do if the clips look too small for the wire?
Do not force them onto a thicker upright. UK reviews on the VOUNOT files describe clips that only suited a thin gate or the thinnest wire, and some buyers returned them. A 5 mm or 6 mm end clip from a fence supplier is a separate part, not the clip in these boxes. If the wire and the clip do not meet, the roll is the wrong pack for that fence.
