Folding room divider privacy screen: zig-zag and gaps

Updated: October 2026

You are trying to split a bedroom, a studio or a shop floor without drilling the walls, and the listing says no tools and about 15 minutes. A folding room divider privacy screen only works if you treat it as a zig-zag on a flat floor, not as a wall. This page stays with the four frames in our set: why they fall over, what the hinge gaps do, and which one is worth assembling. The rows and prices are on the [privacy screen comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/privacy-screen). Peter F., 20 October 2026. We used the amazon.co.uk listings and UK trade notes on concertina screens. We did not build the frames. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What these four screens are

All four are freestanding panel screens. None fixes to the wall. The Kokorona, B0FB93TPWX, is six grey panels, 180 gsm, 10.5 kg, with cover strips. The title says about 329 x 176 cm, the table says 3.29 x 1.76 m, and a bullet also says 335 x 176 cm. It is about £65.99 with 4.0 from 519 ratings, and it claims indoor and outdoor use. The HIDODO, B0DR2BD858, is four panels, 224 x 178 cm, 180 gsm, 8.51 kg, ten wheels of which five are braked, indoor only, about £69.99, 4.2 from 30 ratings. The WELDUN, B0G64PPWVF, is four panels, highlight 223.5 x 183 cm, 240 gsm, lockable wheels, 7.72 kg, indoor, about £39.99, 3.9 from 206 ratings. A separate line says 30 x 40 cm, which is not that highlight. The REDCAMP, B0FM73R1XJ, is four panels, about 2.04 x 1.73 m, 130 g polyester, 4.34 kg, about £39.99, 3.1 from 40 ratings. Its highlight says indoor outdoor. The cloth weight does not support that. REDCAMP's 130 g is the lightest skin. WELDUN's 240 gsm is the heaviest. Kokorona and HIDODO sit at 180 gsm. Heavier cloth does not close a hinge gap. No listing states a fire rating. The price band is about £40 for the cheaper four-panel frames and about £66 to £70 for the six-panel and the braked four-panel. How this differs from a garden net is on the privacy screen buying guide.

Why they fall over

A concertina screen stands because it is crooked on purpose. XL Displays, on a commercial six-panel that is not one of these ASINs, says the screen should be used in a zig-zag and not in a straight line. A straight run has no depth, so a push in the middle drops it. These frames follow the same geometry with lighter metal. Kokorona reviews say it is a little unstable unless set with its two end bars doing the work, and a corner is where it gets unhappy. REDCAMP reviews call it flimsy, and one buyer tied it to the ceiling so a dog could not knock it over. Lockable wheels are not listed on that frame. WELDUN claims lockable wheels, and reviews still include screens that blew over in a gentle breeze. A HIDODO review says a child can tip it, because the base is wheels rather than pegs. Five brakes out of ten are worth locking. They are not a tip-proof certificate. Set the zig-zag, lock whatever brakes exist, and do not leave one panel as a door people push.

Gaps, cover strips, and the width you lose

Hinge gaps are a strip of light between panels. Kokorona and HIDODO both claim cover strips. Kokorona reviews say those strips close the joins and block light between the panels. A HIDODO review used the strip as a backdrop and said it blocks light. REDCAMP reviews say you can see through the gaps, and there is no strip line to answer that. WELDUN claims a non-see-through fabric, which is the cloth, not a promise about the hinges. If the point of the screen is a changing corner or a bed you do not want overlooked, buy a model whose listing includes the strips and whose reviews mention them. A 240 gsm cloth with a bright gap at every hinge still reads as a broken wall. The headline width is the panels in a line. A zig-zag shortens the span. XL Displays' six-panel example, which is not the Kokorona, is 2,650 mm wide at 90 degrees rather than 3,600 mm laid flat. Use that only as a picture of the loss. On the HIDODO, each panel is also listed as 52 x 164 cm, which does not multiply cleanly into 224 cm. On the Kokorona, 329 cm, 335 cm and 3.29 m are already three figures before you fold it. Measure the floor, then assume the finished screen is shorter than the longest number on the page.

Which one to assemble

Assemble the Kokorona if the opening is wide, you want the cover strips, and you will give the first build more than the 15 minutes on the bullets. Reviews say that line is untrue, and one buyer said so directly. At about £65.99 and 4.0 from 519 ratings it is the divider with the largest review file here. Leave it if you only need to hide a corner, or if you needed outdoor mesh. The indoor-and-outdoor claim is not a reason to stand it on a patio in a gale. Leave the REDCAMP if anyone might knock it. At about £39.99 it loses to the WELDUN on cloth weight and on the tipping stories. Choose the WELDUN if you want 240 gsm cloth and you own a Phillips screwdriver, because reviews say the no-tools line is wrong. Choose the HIDODO if you want braked wheels and hinge strips, you accept about £69.99 and only 30 ratings, and children will not lean on it. A 15-minute bullet is not a reason to buy any of the four. Garden fitting stays on how to fit a privacy screen. If you are still unsure the job is indoor, the outdoor alternative is privacy netting or artificial ivy.

Common questions

How many panels do I need for a wide room?
Six, if you are choosing inside this set. The Kokorona title is about 329 cm across, with 335 cm also printed in a bullet, at 176 cm high. A four-panel headline here is about 2.04 m to 2.24 m before you angle it. The zig-zag shortens whatever number you started with, so a wide bedroom is the six-panel job and a corner is the four-panel job.
Will the screen stand if I open it in a straight line?
It is much more likely to fall. Trade concertina screens are specified for a zig-zag, not a flat line, and that geometry applies even though those trade models are not these ASINs. Kokorona reviews want it set with the two end bars doing the work. A dead-straight run has no depth for those feet to brace against.
Do the hinge gaps show?
They show on the REDCAMP, where reviews mention gaps and no cover strip is listed. Kokorona and HIDODO include cover strips, and reviews say those strips block light at the joins. WELDUN's non-see-through line refers to the 240 gsm cloth, not automatically to the hinges. If a gap of daylight matters, buy the strips and check they arrived.
Can I build it with no tools in 15 minutes?
Not on the evidence in these reviews. Kokorona's bullets say about 15 minutes with no help, and buyers say the first build takes longer. WELDUN's listing says no tools, and reviews mention a Phillips screwdriver and badly drilled holes. REDCAMP sleeves were tight enough that stitches were cut to pass the poles. Allow a free hour, and keep a screwdriver in the room.
Are lockable wheels the same as tip-proof?
No. HIDODO has five braked wheels out of ten, and a review says a child can still tip it. WELDUN claims lockable wheels, and some reviews say it blew over in a light breeze. REDCAMP does not list lockable wheels at all. Lock the brakes you have, keep the zig-zag, and do not treat wheels as a safety feature for children.
What width do I actually get?
Less than the longest figure once the panels are angled. The Kokorona page already prints 329 cm, 335 cm and 3.29 m. The HIDODO headline is 224 cm, with each panel also listed at 52 cm, which is not a clean four-panel sum. A commercial six-panel example from XL Displays drops from 3,600 mm laid flat to 2,650 mm at 90 degrees. That measurement is theirs. Use it as a warning to measure your floor, not as the Kokorona's finished width.
