Fly screen for windows in the UK: which type to fit

Updated: October 2026

A warm night, the casement cracked open, and flies or moths already in the room: that is the reason a UK household looks for a fly screen for windows. The useful decision is the fixing and the maximum size, before a brand name. A hook-and-loop sheet, a magnetic frame, a zip sheet and a roller-shutter clamp are different objects, and the wrong one wastes the tape or the strip. This guide stays at that type level. Named prices and who should skip each listing sit on the [Jarolift insect screen comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/jarolift-insect-screen). Listings were checked on amazon.co.uk on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Four families cover almost every search for an insect screen for windows. A hook-and-loop sheet is mesh plus sticky hook tape. You cut it down, press it to a flat frame, and peel the sheet off when you need the handle. A magnetic frame is a strip, a mesh with a magnetic edge, and a PVC cover. You peel the edge back and it is meant to close again, which suits a window you open every evening. A zip sheet, or a sheet with a magnetic slit, stays stuck at the border and opens only where the handle is. The fourth object is not a stick-on kit at all. jarolift's Schiebfix is a telescopic aluminium frame that clamps into roller-shutter guides. On 19 October 2026 the amazon.co.uk listing B00CP3IGYM had no featured offer, so this comparison does not invent a GBP price for it, and none of the stick-on kits here is a jarolift product. One BKSAI sheet in the wider set prints both 100 × 130 cm and up to 130 × 150 cm. Treat a clash like that as a reason to measure, not as two sizes you may choose between.

Measure the face you will stick to

Measure the flat frame face that will take the tape or the magnetic strip, in millimetres, not the glass. A handle, a trickle vent and a sill all change the usable face. Take the width and the drop of the face you can tape, use the smallest of three readings if the frame is out of square, and compare that rectangle with the seller's maximum. A 100 × 130 cm magnetic frame does not cover a larger sash, however carefully you pull it. Leave the trickle vent clear. Approved Document F treats background ventilation as a sized opening, not as something you may tape over because the room feels draughty. A screen that seals the vent is the wrong place for the mesh, even when the rest of the frame is flat. If the handle projects into the room, a plain sheet will be pushed off when you close the window. That is the moment to look at a magnetic peel-back or a zip, which the magnetic frame or hook-and-loop page sets out as a trade-off rather than a slogan.

How many windows one box covers

Sheet multi-packs are how most people cover a flat on a budget. A four-pack at about £13.99 is four openings if each window is inside 1.3 × 1.5 m and you will leave the nets up. A three-pack at about £11.04 is the same idea with one fewer sheet. Magnetic frames in the same check sat at about £23 to £28 and are one window each. UK reviews on those frames often say the magnetic strip runs out before the spare mesh does, so a second bedroom is a second box, not a hopeful offcut. Renters should assume residue is possible. tesa says its own hook-and-loop tape is meant to come off cleanly. Reviews on cheaper tape often say the opposite after heat.

When the kit in front of you is the wrong family

A no-drill sheet is the right family for a flat uPVC or timber casement you can reach from the floor, clean, and tape without covering a vent. It is the wrong family when you have roller-shutter guides and you wanted the clamp frame those guides are built for. That is the jarolift Schiebfix type. A stick-on sheet does not become that frame because the search said jarolift. It is also the wrong family when you are trying to stop midges and the listing never prints a hole size. Fine mesh on a bullet is not the 0.6 mm rule of thumb. A mesh is not a cat or child barrier on an upper floor. Councils such as Kensington and Chelsea tell residents to keep window restrictors working. jarolift's own Schiebfix text says not to leave a clamp frame unattended with children or pets. The same warning applies to every sheet here. A sliding sash or a roof window with no flat face that stays still, or a fit that needs a ladder, is a different case, set out on the sash and roof windows page.

Common questions

Is a sheet or a magnetic frame better for a normal casement?
A flat casement with a handle you rarely need can take a hook-and-loop sheet, which is the cheaper way to cover several windows. A casement you open every day is the magnetic-frame job, because you peel the edge back instead of taking the sheet down, as long as the opening is inside that frame's maximum. If the handle hits the mesh when you close the window, the sheet is the wrong type even on a simple casement.
Do I measure the glass or the frame?
Measure the frame face you will tape or stick the magnetic strip to, in millimetres. The glass is smaller than that face, and a kit cut to the glass often finishes short of the tape. If the frame is out of square, use the smallest width and the smallest drop. Compare those figures with the seller's maximum before you order.
Will one pack do every bedroom?
A three-pack or four-pack of sheets can, if each opening is inside the stated maximum and you accept hook tape. A magnetic frame in this set is one window, and reviewers often run out of strip before they run out of mesh. A second bedroom is usually a second magnetic box.
Do I need roller-shutter guides for a jarolift screen?
You need those guides for the Schiebfix clamp frame, which slides in the shutter channel. You do not need them for a hook-and-loop sheet or a magnetic kit, and those kits are not jarolift products. The Schiebfix listing checked here had no current GBP shelf price.
Can I tape over the trickle vent?
No. Background ventilation under Approved Document F is a sized opening, and covering the vent with mesh or tape blocks it. Run the screen around the vent, or choose a face that leaves the vent clear. A fly screen is for insects, not a substitute for the vent the window was fitted with.
