Magnetic or Velcro fly screen: door curtain or sheet

Updated: October 2026

The back door is open for the washing, and the bedroom window is open only after dark. Those are two fittings, even when both parcels say fly screen and both claim you need no drill. Magnetic or Velcro fly screen is a question about how you pass the opening, not about which advert says the magnets are strong. This page is from Peter F. on 20 October 2026. It uses the amazon.co.uk listings in this comparison and the review notes saved with them. A seller blog that claims adhesive always ages faster is not our test. When the magnetic door curtain is the one

Choose the magnetic curtain when people, and often a dog, walk through the same door all afternoon. In this set that product is SMALUCK, ASIN B0C6K6H9N7, a black polyester curtain at 90 by 210 cm, about £9.99, rated 4.5 from 2,123 reviews. Tape and push pins are in the box. A magnetic seam runs up the centre, and the bullets add a bottom weight. Reviewers describe magnets closing after they walk through, a fit in about five minutes on half of a French door, and fewer flies and wasps while the door stays open. Dogs learned the gap. One review says a neighbour's cat stayed out. While the seam is open, insects have the same path the dog used, so the curtain is a habit, not a lock. The size is the condition. The cloth is 90 cm wide and 210 cm high, and the listing would rather it be slightly larger than the opening. A UK reviewer says it cannot be trimmed, including after a chat answer that said it could. If your doorway is wider, narrower, or much shorter, the magnets will not invent a seal. Push pins suit timber that can take a hole. On uPVC, you are back to tape, and tape on a door that slams is working harder than tape on a bedroom window you touch once a week. A hem that pools on the threshold will hold the seam apart. Hang it so the weight hangs free and the door still closes. You are not going to peel a full sheet every time you carry a plate into the garden. The curtain does not answer the window. It answers the walk-through, and only at about that size.

When hook-and-loop is enough

Hook-and-loop is enough when you stick the sheet, trim it, and peel a corner only to reach a handle. The best-supported sheet here is tesa Insect Stop at 110 by 130 cm, B0001M0H7S, about £6.97, 4.2 from 11,242 reviews. It is polyester, with the tape in the box, and reviewers peel it back rather than walk through it. The fault to plan for is overlapping the adhesive pads, which stops the second pad sticking. The smaller tesa, 100 by 100 cm at about £2.56, is the same idea on a window that is actually that small. Reviewers who opened an upper-floor window often found the tape let go, and one said flies passed through. Occasional use is the honest brief, not a casement you throw open at every cooking smell. The multi-packs are the same fixing with more cloth. MOEGFY at about £11.04 is three sheets, 4.1 from 4,638 reviews, with tape and a cutter. YANGTE at about £13.99 is four sheets, 4.1 from 4,264 reviews. Both collect adhesive complaints. One MOEGFY reviewer cleaned the frame and still moved to industrial double-sided tape. Another used a sheet as a cat barrier and the adhesive came away. XYGK at about £4.19 is one 130 by 150 cm sheet with a thin 5.0 from three ratings. Tape on uPVC can work for a summer if the frame is clean, flat, and left alone. It is a weak plan for a door, a daily handle, or a finish you cannot mark. Our notes show tape failing, and they also show a magnetic window sheet whose magnets slide. Neither fixing has earned a forever claim. The order of cleaning, cutting, and not overlapping tape is on how to fit a fly screen.

The awkward middle

BKSAI, B0GHQCLTYZ, looks like a compromise and behaves like a third product. It is a white window sheet at about £7.50, 3.9 from 379 reviews, with hook tape and a magnetic opening you are told to place at the handle. The size line says 100 by 130 cm. The bullets say windows up to 130 by 150 cm. Reviewers liked a sturdy first fit, including a Velux done in under an hour. They also describe a sheet that fell off a high Velux, metal clips that do not hold, and magnets that pull apart in tension and then slide off each other. A protruding UK handle stopped a close fit. Very small insects still passed in one Velux review. So a magnetic opening on a window is not the same object as a door curtain you walk through, and it is not as uneventful as a plain sheet you peel twice a day. Haiyox, B0HG18BN7K, is the other middle. Two black 130 by 150 cm sheets at about £8.99, with a zipper and adhesive tapes in the bullets, and no review line in the file. A zip lets you open part of the mesh for cleaning or air without taking the whole sheet down. That is useful on a kitchen window if the zip lands where your hand goes. It is still tape at the edge, and nobody in this file has said whether that tape lasts. Do not read a zip as a walk-through door. Amig's aluminium frame sits outside this choice. It is a shutter-slot screen at about £36.39, not Velcro and not a magnetic curtain. If you open the window every day and both tape and a sliding magnetic sheet have already annoyed you, that frame is the skip, provided the slot exists. It does not help a door.

Which to buy for this opening

If you walk through the opening and it is about 90 by 210 cm, buy the SMALUCK magnetic curtain and do not plan to cut it. If you barely touch the window after the first fit, buy a hook-and-loop sheet, and start with the 110 by 130 cm tesa unless the frame is truly inside 100 cm. If you use the handle every day, neither flat sheet is comfortable: peel-back tape fights you, and BKSAI's magnetic opening has review notes about sliding magnets and proud handles. In that case use a frame that stands off the glass, or accept that you will peel the sheet and press it back. A zip sheet is only for someone who wants a partial opening and can live with no reviews. None of these choices states a midge weave. Passing the opening easily does not mean the smallest insects stop.

Common questions

I walk through the back door all day. Which type?
The magnetic door curtain, if the opening is about 90 by 210 cm. SMALUCK at about £9.99 is the one in this set, with 4.5 from 2,123 reviews, tape, pins, and a centre seam. A flat Velcro sheet means unsticking the door every time you pass, which people stop doing. If the doorway is a different size, do not cut this curtain to suit. A reviewer says it cannot be trimmed.
I only open the bedroom window at night. Which type?
A hook-and-loop sheet. You fit it once, peel it for the handle, and leave it. The 110 by 130 cm tesa sheet has the largest review count here, at 4.2 from 11,242. Clean the frame and do not overlap the adhesive pads. A magnetic door curtain is surplus cloth on a window you do not walk through, and you may not be allowed to cut it down.
Is a magnetic window sheet the same as a door curtain?
No. BKSAI is a window net with a magnetic slit, about £7.50, 3.9 from 379 reviews. SMALUCK is a weighted door curtain you part in the middle. The window version still relies on hook tape around the frame, and reviewers report magnets that slide and a Velux fit that fell. The door version is for walking through a 90 by 210 cm opening. Buying one because the title says magnetic does not give you the other.
Will Velcro stay on uPVC?
Sometimes, for a while, on a clean, dry, flat face. It is not guaranteed. Upper-floor tesa reviews describe grip fading each time the window moves. MOEGFY reviews include people who added stronger tape. Overlapping pads, which a tesa reviewer warns against, stops the second pad sticking. Test a short length where a mark would not matter, especially in a rental. Removes without residue is a listing claim, not a result we can promise.
Can the door curtain be cut?
The SMALUCK specification does not say yes, and a UK review says no, after the buyer was told that it could. Measure 90 cm by 210 cm against the frame before you order. If you need a shorter drop, this comparison does not establish a safe cut that keeps the magnets and the bottom weight working.
Are magnets safe with a pacemaker?
These listings and the notes behind them do not say. There is no medical claim to repeat, and no gauss figure tied to a device. If you have a pacemaker or another implant, ask the clinician who manages it before you live with a magnetic seam at chest height. Do not take a product bullet as advice.
