How to fit a fly screen: measure, clean, and then fix

Updated: October 2026

The sheet is on the table, the window is open, and the first insect is already at the edge you have not stuck yet. How to fit a fly screen is mostly measuring and cleaning. The mesh brand matters less than a gap, a dusty frame, or a handle you forgot. This page is from Peter F. on 20 October 2026. It follows the kit contents and review notes in this amazon.co.uk set, plus measuring points from Simple Screens and the ventilation point in Approved Document F. We did not fit a trial window. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Which product you should have bought is on the [insect screen comparison](/hub/hedges-and-privacy-screens/insect-screen).

Measure the opening you have

Measure the frame face or the reveal, not the glass. Take the width at the top, the middle, and the bottom. Take the height at the left, the centre, and the right. If the screen cannot stretch, the smallest of those figures is the one you cut to. uPVC frames are often out of square by a few millimetres, and that is enough for a lit gap at dusk. Write the numbers down before you peel any tape. A handle, a trickle vent, and a night latch are part of the opening. If the handle stands proud of a flat casement, a sheet pulled tight across it will tent, or it will be knocked off when you turn the handle. BKSAI reviewers describe that clash on a UK window, and one high Velux fit fell down after a long installation. Simple Screens, writing about their own screens, use about 2 cm of extra cloth on a door as a rule of thumb. That figure is theirs. Do not copy it onto the SMALUCK curtain, because a UK reviewer of that curtain says it cannot be trimmed, and the listing already wants the cloth close to 90 by 210 cm. Open the window once before the last cut. If the smallest width is larger than the sheet, stop. Joining the 100 by 100 cm tesa sheet to a second piece is how reviewers covered a wide window, and it is also how a seam becomes a gap. Which of those is the better-supported listing is on best fly screen UK.

Stick a sheet so it stays

Every adhesive listing in this set tells you to clean the frame first. Dust, grease, and flaking paint are why tape lets go in week one, including on a kitchen window. Wash with something that does not leave a film, then let the frame dry. Fitting onto a wet or cold silicone bead is not the path. Press the hook tape onto the flat face, not onto a curved decorative edge, and run a thumb or the little press tool along it. MOEGFY includes a press tool and a cutter. YANGTE includes a brush. The tool does not rescue a dirty frame. Do not overlap the adhesive pads. A tesa reviewer says the second pad will not stick if it sits on the first. Butt the ends, or leave a tiny gap, rather than stacking them at the corner. If the roll is shorter, start again with a full length instead of bridging with a scrap that will lift. One smaller tesa pack arrived with netting shorter than the tape already applied. Check that before you commit the last side. On an upper floor, a reviewer found the Velcro lost grip every time the window moved. Cut the mesh after the tape position is settled, and leave enough to peel back for the handle if the sheet has no opening of its own. Scissors struggle with some fine nets. YANGTE reviewers say the mesh tears and is hard to cut cleanly, so support it and cut on a board, not in mid-air. A cat is a fitting fault. A MOEGFY reviewer who used the sheet as an indoor barrier said the adhesive came away. Do not tension a stick-on net and call it a safety screen.

Doors, slot frames, and mesh rolls

A magnetic door curtain is not trimmed like a sheet. SMALUCK is 90 by 210 cm, with tape, push pins, centre magnets, and a bottom weight. Measure the doorway against that cloth. If it is the wrong size, cutting is not an established fix: a reviewer says it cannot be trimmed. Hang it so the magnetic seam meets, then walk through once and watch the seam close. Pins are for frames that can take pins. On uPVC, tape is the path that avoids holes, and tape can still fail in the wet. The bottom weight only helps if the hem is free. A hem that catches the door will hold the seam open, which is an invitation, not a seal. The daily choice between this curtain and a peel-back sheet is on magnetic or Velcro fly screen. Amig's framed screen is a slot fit, if you have the slot. The bullets say you adjust the white aluminium frame, from 100 by 70 cm out toward 190 cm wide, and close the roller shutter to hold it, without screws or adhesive. Offer it up before you force a bent corner. One review describes a unit that arrived with a bent frame and loose clips. A flat window with no shutter channel will not grip that frame just because the mesh is fibreglass. A roll needs a frame you supply. Yeasing is 1.2 by 2.5 m of fibreglass, aperture stated under 1.5 mm, with no tape. A reviewer stapled it to homemade timber. Staple or batten to the timber, not to the uPVC bead, and air the cloth first if it smells. Solkraes is the large polyester piece, about 3 by 10 m. Check the roll for a stitched tear before you cut, because one buyer found one about 30 cm in from the edge. Neither roll is a waterproof cover.

When you should not continue

Stop if the work is at height and you are stretching over a stair void or a landing window with one hand on the mesh. A Velux that needs a long reach is how a BKSAI reviewer ended up with a sheet that fell off. Stop if the door is a fire door or an escape route. Adhesive mesh is not a reason to block it. Stop if the room is a food-preparation room that an inspector will look at. Regulation 852/2004 expects an insect-proof screen, where necessary, that you can remove for cleaning. A private flat is outside that duty. A food business should not improvise with a torn net and hope. Stop if you are about to cover the only trickle vent and treat the room as still ventilated under Approved Document F. Mesh over glass is not a vent. Consumer Rights Act 2015 matters when the goods are not as described: a curtain sold as trimmable that is not, or a screen sold to stop flies that a reviewer says flies pass through. That is a returns conversation, not a reason to add superglue to a painted frame, which one tesa buyer did. If the opening is a bi-fold, a listed window, or a shape none of these kits name, a fitter with a made-to-measure frame is the next step.

Common questions

Where do I measure?
On the frame or the reveal, at three widths and three heights, and you keep the smallest if the mesh cannot stretch. The glass size is smaller than the frame and will give you a sheet that does not reach the tape. Include the handle and any vent in the sketch. For the SMALUCK curtain, compare those figures with 90 by 210 cm before you open the pins.
Do I clean the frame with anything special?
Clean it so the tape meets bare, dry frame, not grease or dust. Listings say clean and dry. They do not name a solvent. Avoid a film that feels slippery afterwards, and do not stick onto wet paint or a damp silicone line. If the paint is flaking, the tape will come away with the paint. That is a preparation job, not a mesh fault.
Can I overlap the sticky strips?
No. A tesa reviewer says overlapping two adhesive pads stops the second pad sticking. Butt the ends or leave a hairline gap at the corner. If a length is short, replace it with one full piece. Bridging with offcuts is how a corner lifts on the first hot day.
What if the handle hits the mesh?
Peel a plain sheet back and refit it so the handle has a flap, or place a magnetic opening over the handle if that is the kit you bought. A proud handle under a tight sheet leaves a gap or knocks the tape off. BKSAI reviews describe both the handle problem and magnets that slide instead of staying closed, so a magnetic window sheet is not an automatic fix.
Can I cut a magnetic door curtain?
Not the SMALUCK one, on the evidence in this file. The specification does not say it is cuttable, and a UK reviewer says it cannot be trimmed. If the doorway is the wrong size, exchange it. Cutting a hem to force a fit can open the magnetic seam or drop the bottom weight out of line.
When should I stop and get help?
When the window is too high to fit safely, when the door is a fire or escape door, when a food business needs a cleanable screen for an inspection, or when the opening is a bi-fold or listed frame these kits do not cover. Also stop if the only way to make the cloth fit is to cut a curtain a reviewer says cannot be cut. A measured frame from a fitter costs more than about £7 and avoids a gap you will look at all summer.
