Heating pump buying guide

Updated: 22 October 2026

Your radiators are lukewarm, the old circulator hums, or your installer told you to order a 130 mm pump, and the amazon.co.uk results look like the same black cylinder. This heating pump buying guide sets the order for a UK wet system: mechanical fit, duty, pump type, speed, and the nameplate check before you drain down. Live prices for the ten listings sit on the [heating pump comparison](/hub/heating/heating-pump). This page stays with the checks and does not crown a winner. Peter F. compared those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK guidance. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What this pump does in your system

A wet central-heating circulator is the small motor that pushes heated water around the radiator circuit, or a dedicated zone. It is not the boiler, and it is not the cylinder pump in every layout. When it weakens, upstairs radiators often cool first, the boiler cycles more, or a hum sits in the airing cupboard. A new pump does not fix sludge, trapped air, or a stuck thermostatic radiator valve. It restores flow when the old bearings or impeller have had enough. If you smell gas, see boiler lockouts, or cannot tell flow from return, stop. Gas-train work belongs with a Gas Safe engineer.

Size and fit: start with 130 mm and the unions

Most domestic swaps in this batch target 130 mm port-to-port, the familiar Grundfos UPS and Wilo footprint. Measure centre to centre on the old flanges, or photograph the label, before you buy. Unions are commonly 1½ in BSP. Some kits include reducers to 1 in. Match your pipework, not the cheapest photo. The flow arrow must point the same way as the old unit. Reversing it cuts performance and can add noise. A 180 mm gap will not take a 130 mm body without pipe alteration. UPS2 naming, and 15-50 versus 25-60, is on the Grundfos pump replacement page.

Head, flow, and standard versus boost

Codes such as 25-60 or 15-50 are duty classes: head in metres and flow in litres per minute. A typical two-storey house with eight to twelve radiators often ran on a standard circulator around 6 m head and three fixed speeds. Auto-boost or inverter pumps in the table print higher head, 8 m to 12 m, and sometimes lower max flow. They suit a circuit that starves upstairs on a plain 25-60, not every home. Boost hardware for one cold radiator is usually the wrong lever. Balancing or air removal comes first. Higher listed flow does not mean a faster warm-up if pipework or TRVs limit delivery. Named ASINs are on best central heating pump.

Speed, noise, and ErP labels

Most units here under £50 are three-speed switches. UK reviews on Trident and JASSFERRY rows often say the middle speeds whine until the system is bled and balanced. Start on speed 1 after refill, then step up only if radiators need it. Since 1 January 2022, heating circulators placed on the UK market should meet an EEI of 0.23 or lower. An A-rated or B-rated bullet is not that number on the metal nameplate. Wilo’s public guidance notes that legacy three-speed-only designs may fail modern compliance. This guide does not certify any amazon.co.uk listing. If head or flow is missing from the page, photograph the old pump before you drain down.

Before you order: practical checklist

With the cupboard open, confirm 130 mm spacing and the BSP union size, note the old duty class, and decide standard versus boost from pump type rather than the title. Plan the connectors. Some Trident rows include cast-iron unions. JASSFERRY listings differ on washers. Isolate only when you swap. If you open the system, plan inhibitor. Skipped treatment shows up as early noise. A sharper sound for about a week can be air clearing. A screech that remains after bleeding is speed or duty, on central heating pump noisy. More than £45 makes sense for sized boost head or inverter steps. Less is enough for many Grundfos-sized swaps when fit and duty match. Recheck GBP at checkout.

Common questions

What does 25-60 130 mean on the listing?
It is merchant shorthand: a 25 mm family pump capable of up to about 60 duty units, a head and flow pairing, built for 130 mm flange spacing. Treat it as a compatibility hint, not proof your house needs that duty. Your old nameplate photo is the anchor.
Do I need a boosting pump or a standard circulator?
Choose a standard circulator for most UK homes that already ran a UPS-style 25-60. Choose boost when you have evidence the old standard unit could not lift the circuit: persistent cold upstairs after balancing, engineer advice, or a prior boost pump on the label. Boost is not a default upgrade for one slow radiator.
How do I know the pump will fit my pipework?
Measure port-to-port length and union size, compare them with the listing lines, and check the flow arrow against your pipes. If the measurements differ by more than a few millimetres, order adapters or pick another listing before you drain the system.
Is an A-rated bullet the same as ErP compliance?
No. The EEI on the nameplate is the compliance check. Amazon bullets are advertising. If the plate is missing or illegible, resolve it with the seller before you fit the pump.
What if only upstairs radiators are cold?
Try bleeding and balancing before you buy boost hardware. A sudden fault points more to air or the pump. A gradual one points more to sludge or balance. If the pump runs hot but the radiators stay cold, follow the fault-finding path rather than upsizing first.
When should I pay more than £45?
When duty calculations or the old equipment show you need boost head, inverter steps, or verified accessories in the box, and when you accept thinner UK reviews on those dearer listings. Otherwise a standard circulator with a deep UK review file often suffices.
