How to use a 1000W infrared heater

Updated: 22 October 2026

You switched the heater on and the glow looks convincing, yet your shoulders still feel cold when you step two metres away. That gap is normal for a 1000W infrared heater: it warms surfaces and skin in line of sight, not the whole air volume. The [1000W infrared heater comparison](/hub/heating/1000w-infrared-heater) lists six models, one floor tower and five panels. This page is placement, clearance, and switch-off habits. Peter F. compared amazon.co.uk listings and public UK sources. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Point it at the seat

Radiant heat travels in a beam. On the Warmlite WL42013, fit the base, stand the tower on a level floor, and angle the carbon face at your torso or legs, not the ceiling. Use 500 W for gentler spot heat. Use 1000 W when you accept about 26 pence an hour on the Ofgem average of 26.32 p/kWh for 1 October to 31 December 2026 in England, Scotland and Wales on Direct Debit. Oscillation covers about 70°. Reviews mention a hum, so a fixed head is reasonable. Mount a wall panel so the face sees the chair or desk. DESNZ infrared work found line of sight mattered most. A high sofa back blocks the beam. Ceiling models should hang on the supplied cable, face down. If the title says ceiling and the mounting field says Wall Mount, stop and read the manual.

What 1000 W does and does not do

At full power a resistive 1000 W heater draws 1 kWh per hour while the element is on. A thermostat cycles minutes. It does not change the draw during the on part. A three-second heat line describes felt warmth in front of the element, not a warm room. UK panel reviews often say it is warm beside the unit and cool elsewhere. Comfort fades when you switch off, because the air was never the store. If you pace the room or want heat after power-off, compare an infrared heater vs oil filled radiator. The Warmlite bullets do not confirm a timer, so switch it off yourself. A remote or a schedule still has to match when you sit in the beam.

Clearance, clothes, and leaving the room

No file here publishes millimetre clearances for these six ASINs. Until the box manual says otherwise, keep at least one metre from curtains, bedding, and paper. Do not dry clothes or towels on the grille. Plug into a wall socket, not an extension lead, as Electrical Safety First and Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue advise. Expert Reviews UK warned against drying laundry in front of the Warmlite. Overheat protection is not a licence to cover the element. Switch the tower off and unplug it when you leave or sleep. Energy Saving Trust gives the same rule for portable electric heat. If the plug is damaged, the RCD trips, or you smell hot plastic, stop and do not bypass the trip.

Fixed panels and the ceiling

Wall and ceiling panels here weigh about 7 kg to 17.2 kg. Plasterboard without a joist or a rated anchor is not a DIY step in this guide. A fused spur, a new circuit, or a bathroom special location belongs to a registered electrician. Check every Byekalt or Hocosyme bracket, hook, and cable before you drill. One UK Byekalt review reported missing hooks. Fit only a complete kit. IP54 does not replace zone checks. Read infrared heater bathroom zones before a plug-in panel crosses that threshold.

Common questions

Can I put it behind the sofa?
Only if the radiant face can still see you. A panel behind a high back mostly heats the upholstery, which is why a blocked line of sight feels like a cold room even with the heater on.
Can I dry clothes or a towel on a carbon tower?
No. UK fire and electrical safety guidance forbids drying on portable heaters. Carbon elements are a scorch risk with fabric. Overheat protection is not permission to drape a towel on the grille.
What does the 500 W setting do?
On the Warmlite it halves the draw to about 13 pence an hour at the same cap rate, giving gentler spot heat when 1000 W feels too sharp. It is still radiant heat in the beam, not a warmer whole room.
How far should a panel be from curtains?
Follow the manual in the box. Until it gives a figure, keep a metre from curtains, bedding, and paper.
When do I stop and call an electrician?
For a new circuit, consumer unit work, bathroom special-location alterations, a ceiling that must hold 7 kg or 17.2 kg, a fused spur, or repeated RCD tripping. Do that before you guess at cable anchors.
