Ear defenders vs ear plugs

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are choosing a muff or a plug for the same saw, or you already own both and you are about to add the two SNR numbers. Ear defenders vs ear plugs is a type choice, not a second ranking of the twelve cups. Never add a plug SNR to a muff SNR. Model scores stay on the [ear defenders comparison](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders). Seal checks stay on [how to wear ear defenders](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders/sub/ear-defenders-how-to-wear). Set against HSE and 3M UK’s dual-protection note on 20 October 2026, with no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Same job, different standard

EN 352-1 is the earmuff standard. EN 352-2 is earplugs. EN 352-3 is helmet-mounted muffs, and none of these twelve is that clip-on type. Folding stores the headband. It is not a helmet mount. On the Dr.meter FM-1B the title is a headband and the fit-type field says “Behind the Head”. If those lines disagree, do not assume one rating covers both. CE or UKCA follows a declaration of conformity for the protector that was actually tested. A noise-cancelling headphone meets neither part of EN 352 unless it has been through the relevant one. Feeling quiet on a train is not a hearing-protector test.

Muffs when the noise starts and stops

HSE’s woodworking guidance prefers muffs for repeated short exposures, because they are quicker to fit and remove than plugs. A saw that runs, stops while you mark the next piece, and runs again is that pattern. You can seat a headband in a second. You cannot roll a foam plug, with dusty hands, every time the blade starts. Muffs lose on heat and on anything trapped in the cushion. Glasses, a hood, and a hard hat lift the pad. In this set, glasses arms dig in on an iClever review, and cumunebula cushions lift under safety glasses and a hard hat. The X2A claims compatibility with 3M eyewear. Try the seal.

Plugs when the seal of a cup cannot survive the other PPE

Plugs are less upset by hats, hoods, and glasses, because they sit in the ear canal. That only holds if the plug is fitted. A plug that is half in is not a higher SNR than a muff that seals. The fit needs clean hands and a quiet moment, not dusty fingers beside the saw. Reusable plugs and disposable plugs are both EN 352-2. Disposables are finished when dirty. Reusables are replaced when they harden. This comparison has not staged a plug, so it will not name a winner or a price. If every cup you try leaks around glasses or a hard hat, buy a plug that states an SNR under EN 352-2 and follow its own fit instructions.

Both at once is not SNR plus SNR

Do not add the numbers. An Optime I at 27 dB plus an Optime III at 35 dB is not 62 dB. 3M UK’s rule of thumb, above about 105 dB(A), is about 6 dB more than the higher rating. An SNR 33 and an SNR 28 are estimated together at 39, not 61. That 6 dB is 3M’s estimate, not an HSE formula. Wear one type from the moment the blade spins up until it stops. If that type is a muff, use the stated bands on ear defenders for power tools. If glasses or a hood keep breaking the seal, choose a plug and fit it properly.

Common questions

Which protects more, muffs or plugs?
Whichever is fitted and worn for the whole noisy spell. A half-fitted plug does not beat a muff that seals. HSE prefers muffs for short repeated woodworking cuts because they go on and off quickly. Plugs cope better with glasses and hats, and they fail when hands are dirty. This page has no plug to score, so it will not name a plug as the winner.
Can I wear plugs and defenders together?
Only plan on both when the noise is high enough to need it, particularly above about 105 dB(A) with strong low-frequency content. For a short DIY cut, one type worn properly is the aim. If you do wear both, 3M’s rule of thumb is about 6 dB on top of the higher rating, not the sum.
Do I add the two SNRs?
No. Adding 27 and 35, or any plug SNR to any muff SNR, overstates the protection. 3M UK’s illustration is SNR 33 and SNR 28 together at about 39, the higher number plus about 6, not 61. That 6 dB is 3M’s rule of thumb for high exposure, not an HSE formula. HSE’s separate step, after a proper calculation, is that the ear is about 4 dB louder than the catalogue. One factor does not replace the other.
Which is better with glasses?
Plugs usually are, because the frames never sit in a cushion. A muff can still seal if the arms are thin, and you prove that with the press test. In this set, glasses dig in on an iClever review, and cumunebula cushions lift under safety glasses and a hard hat. The X2A claims compatibility with 3M eyewear. If your frames break the seal, move to a plug.
Which is better when the tool is only on for a minute at a time?
Muffs. HSE notes that muffs are easier to fit and remove than plugs when the noise is a series of short bursts. You will not refit a foam plug cleanly between every cut with dusty hands. Put the band on before the tool starts, and take it off when the blade has stopped. If the muff cannot seal, a plug fitted once with clean hands can be the better type.
Are helmet muffs or headphones the same thing?
No. Helmet-mounted muffs are EN 352-3. These twelve ASINs are headband muffs, and folding only stores them. Noise-cancelling headphones replace neither type unless they meet the relevant EN 352 part. Reusable and disposable plugs can both be EN 352-2, and they are looked after differently, but this comparison has not staged a plug. Fit is what matters: clean hands, a full insertion, and no adding of the two SNRs.
