Ear defenders for power tools

Updated: 21 October 2026

You are about to run a circular saw, an angle grinder, a mower, or a strimmer, and the easiest buy looks like the thickest cups on the page. Ear defenders for power tools work the other way round. Make the machine quieter first, then pick the muff whose stated band covers what is left. The twelve listings are on the [ear defenders comparison](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders). The seal checks are [how to wear ear defenders](/hub/hearing-protection/ear-defenders/sub/ear-defenders-how-to-wear). Listings were matched to HSE’s notes on 20 October 2026, with no lab test. Quieter tools before a thicker cup

HSE’s order is to eliminate or reduce the noise, then protect. Hearing protection is not a substitute for a blunt blade or a machine that was never the quiet option. On circular saws, the control table points at low-noise blades and maintenance before it points at a muff. A supplier’s lab figure is not the noise under your fence and your timber. INDG362 is the leaflet for that machine data. A phone app is not a workplace assessment. HSE says a 3 dB increase doubles the noise energy. A small rise on a data plate changes the day. It is not a claim that the saw suddenly sounds twice as loud. An extra 4 dB of SNR is a weak trade against a blade that was already the loud one.

What woodworking noise actually looks like

HSE says most woodworking shops are likely to be over the upper action value of 85 dB(A). The examples are indicative, not a measurement of your shed. Circular saws have a sample LAeq of about 97–102 dB, and a planer thicknesser about 97–101 dB. A moderate cup can be too little there, and a 35 dB cup can be too much for a short, quieter task. Your garage is not that shop. Short bursts still count, because the loud minutes dominate the dose. Put the muffs on before the blade spins up, and take them off when the tool stops. A domestic mower does not have one HSE number you can paste in here.

Three stated bands in this set

The Optime I states SNR 27 dB for 87–98 dB(A). Reviews name mowing, strimming, and drills, with speech still audible. Leave it if 27 dB has already proved too low. The split on best ear defenders is Optime I for that moderate band and Optime III when the stated high band is your job. The X2A states SNR 31 dB for 94–105 dB and claims compatibility with 3M eyewear. It is dearer here than the Optime III, and the warranty field prints “No guarantee”. The Optime III states SNR 35 dB for 95–110 dB(A). A 3M UK page has printed “up to 34 dB” for an H540A. This amazon.co.uk row prints 35 dB. Use the listing you are buying.

Pairs that do not belong on the tool

Children’s listings are the wrong shortcut when the stars look kinder. ProCase, Dr.meter children’s, and the iClever EM01 are for school, fireworks, and loud rooms. A bullet that says up to 46 dB is not a planning figure. A strimmer is not a school hall. The Portwest Classic at about £4.79 states no SNR. The plastic band snaps, including on the first wear. Noise-cancelling headphones are out unless the relevant EN 352 part is met. Do not add a plug SNR to a muff SNR.

Common questions

What should I wear for a circular saw?
HSE’s sample for circular saws is about 97–102 dB, which is indicative, not your fence and your blade. In this set the X2A’s stated 94–105 dB and the Optime III’s stated 95–110 dB(A) name a band in that region. Buy a low-noise blade before you treat a thicker cup as the control. If 27 dB has already proved too little, leave the Optime I.
Is a mower as loud as a grinder?
This page will not invent one figure for every mower and every grinder. A grinder in the Optime III reviews is the high band, 95–110 dB(A). A mower in the Optime I reviews is the moderate band those buyers kept the 180 g pair for. Read the machine’s declared noise, then place it on Optime I, the X2A, or the Optime III.
Do I need SNR 35 for every power tool?
No. SNR 35 dB here is the Optime III’s claim for 95–110 dB(A), at 399 g. HSE’s general shop guidance is an SNR around 25 to 30, with the ear below 85 dB and not below 70. A mower inside the Optime I’s band does not need the heaviest cup. The pair you will actually refit between cuts matters more than the last few decibels on the title.
Can I use children’s ear defenders for a strimmer?
No. ProCase children’s muffs at SNR 27 dB, the Dr.meter children’s pair at 27.4 dB, and the iClever EM01 at SNR 29 dB are for school, fireworks, and loud rooms. A strimmer is an adult job. The iClever line that says up to 46 dB in some scenarios is not a planning figure. Use a stated adult band, such as the Optime I for moderate garden work.
Should I buy a quieter blade before a bigger muff?
Yes. HSE puts reduction at source first. On circular saws the control is a low-noise blade and a maintained machine. A 3 dB rise doubles the noise energy, so the plate on the tool changes the day before the SNR on the muff does. After that, pick Optime I, the X2A, or the Optime III for the band that is left.
Why is the X2A dearer here than the Optime III?
On these amazon.co.uk listings the X2A is about £33.95 and the Optime III is about £28.76. The Optime III states SNR 35 dB for 95–110 dB(A) at 399 g. The X2A states SNR 31 dB for 94–105 dB at 259 g. You pay more here for a lighter cup, not for a higher rating. The X2A warranty field prints “No guarantee”.
