HSS vs carbide woodturning

Updated: 24 October 2026

Both words show up in the same amazon.co.uk search, and sometimes on the same product title. One edge is a flute you grind. The other is a small carbide insert you rotate or replace. They do not leave the same surface. This page is HSS vs carbide woodturning for the listings in the [woodturning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/woodturning-chisel): when to buy a shearing gouge, and when a replaceable insert is the honest first tool. Peter F. read those listings and Thameside Woodturners on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two different cuts

A traditional HSS gouge is ground to a bevel. You present that bevel so the edge shears a shaving. The flute shape decides whether the tool is a spindle gouge or a bowl gouge. You need a grinder, because several listings arrive with a factory grind that UK reviews call rough. If you overheat HSS on the wheel it can turn blue. A UK review of the DEEFIINE eight-piece set said the steel blued quickly and did not hold an edge. A carbide tool in this capture is a bar with a screwed-in insert. The cut is closer to a scrape than to a shearing bevel. Thameside Woodturners says you should learn traditional gouges first, and that carbide is an addition rather than the whole kit. That note does not call carbide safer in general. One UK review of the £49.49 set asked for gloves because the inserts were sharp enough to cut a hand.

The carbide rows in this comparison

The DEEFIINE four-piece set, B0CH33MFNS, model W0404B, is £49.49. The title names diamond, round and square inserts. amazon.co.uk shows 4.5 from 58, and eight texts are marked United Kingdom. One UK review turned a small bowl in about an hour, then said the piece needed more sanding and a light touch. Another reports fewer severe catches and no sharpening, if you accept that extra sanding. The SIIIXS six-piece carbide set, B0FBRX5NQ5, is £111.43, with 4.8 from 28, the highest star line in the comparison. The three United Kingdom reviews say the set has not been used. No UK review describes a cut. A 4.8 on an unused sample does not make this the better carbide buy.

When the word HSS is not a fact

Two listings use HSS in the title and then name something else. The DEEFIINE eight-piece set, B0C1NLHB45, is £109.98, with 4.4 from 192. The blade-material line says high speed steel. Another bullet says high-speed steel carbide inserts made of 4341 grade material. The eight flutes are not named. UK reviews describe steel that blues and an edge that does not hold. You cannot file that row under HSS or under carbide until the page stops contradicting itself. The Jeanoko eight-piece set, B0B72877KC, is £49.29. The title says HSS. The blade-material line says manganese steel, and a bullet prints HRC58-6. If you are choosing a steel, read the material line after the title.

Which to buy first

Buy HSS if you will keep a bevel sharp and you want a shearing cut. In this capture that is a Faithfull roughing gouge or spindle gouge, not an eight-piece case whose steel line disagrees with itself. The profile list is the buying guide. Buy carbide if you will not grind and you accept a scrape and more sanding. The captured example is the DEEFIINE four-piece set at £49.49, because a UK review describes the bowl and the sanding. Thameside’s line is that carbide comes in addition, after the traditional tools. Rest first, then the bevel or the insert, is how to use a woodturning chisel.

Common questions

Does carbide cut like a gouge?
Not like a ground HSS flute. A gouge shears when the bevel rubs and the edge takes a shaving. These carbide bars use replaceable inserts, and a UK review of the £49.49 set describes more sanding after an easy hollow. Thameside treats carbide as an addition once you can use a gouge.
Can I start without a grinder?
You can start on carbide if you accept the finish. The £49.49 DEEFIINE set is where a UK beginner reported fewer severe catches and no sharpening. You still need the wrenches and a face shield. HSS without a grinder leaves the factory edge Faithfull tells you to sharpen.
Why do people say carbide needs more sanding?
The UK review that finished a small bowl in about an hour said it needed more sanding, and a light touch, for a fine surface. A shearing gouge can leave a cleaner cut when the bevel is right. The £111.43 kit has no finished piece in its UK reviews, so it does not close that gap.
What happens if HSS is ground until it turns blue?
A UK review of the DEEFIINE eight-piece set says the steel blues quickly and does not hold an edge. This page did not measure a temperature, and that listing also mixes an HSS line with a 4341 insert bullet. Stop, cool the tool, and grind back to steel that has not coloured.
Are the £49.49 DEEFIINE tools HSS?
No. Model W0404B is a carbide-insert set with diamond, round and square inserts, and the bullets say you order replacements. The eight-piece DEEFIINE set at £109.98 says high speed steel and then adds a 4341 carbide-insert bullet. Read the model, not only the brand.
Is the £111.43 six-piece set the better carbide buy because it is 4.8?
It is 4.8 from 28, and the three United Kingdom reviews have not used the tools. The £49.49 set is 4.5 from 58, with a UK review of a small bowl and the sanding afterwards. A higher average does not outweigh a described cut.
Should I own both later?
Thameside’s advice is to learn the gouge, then add carbide. Here that means a Faithfull HSS gouge you will grind and the £49.49 insert set, not a title that says HSS and then names another material.
