Woodturning tools for beginners

Updated: 24 October 2026

You have a lathe, and an eight-piece case looks as if it answers the question of what to buy. Spindle work between centres uses a short list of profiles, and a box of eight can omit the one flute you will actually hold. This page is that short list for woodturning tools for beginners: which job comes first, what the amazon.co.uk rows in this comparison actually contain, and when a set is the wrong saving. The ranked table sits on the [woodturning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/woodturning-chisel). Peter F. read the shelf figures on 22 October 2026 from listings and public UK sources, not a lab edge. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The three tools spindle work actually uses

Record Power’s published 3-piece HSS spindle set is a useful picture of the job, even though that £99.99 kit is not an ASIN in this comparison. The maker lists a 1 inch roughing gouge, a 3/8 inch spindle gouge and a 1/8 inch parting tool, and its getting-started article says those three cover work between centres. A bowl gouge is added only when you want bowls or goblets. Thameside Woodturners says learn spindle work before you live on carbide, and do not treat a spindle roughing gouge as a bowl tool. A roughing gouge takes the square blank down to round. A spindle gouge cuts the coves and beads. A parting tool sizes a tenon and parts off. Postpone the skew until the bevel is a habit, and postpone the bowl gouge until the blank is on a faceplate or a chuck.

What the amazon.co.uk rows cover

The Faithfull singles are the clearest named profiles. The 20 mm roughing gouge is £32.81, with 4.6 from 641. The 8 mm spindle gouge is £18.87 and 4.6 from 479. Faithfull’s bullets say the tools need a final sharpen before first use. On the 8 mm, UK reviews say the packet or an older description said roughing gouge while the tool is a small spindle or fingernail gouge. Read the best woodturning chisel page before you treat the packet name as the profile. The Toolzone WW058, B01LXW5ELP, names its contents, at £40.46 and 4.3 from 45. The bullets list a 26 mm skew, a 16 mm round nose, a 16 mm spear point, and gouges at 10, 13 and 25 mm. No bowl gouge is named. That choice is on the bowl gouge page.

When a set is the wrong saving

Piece count is packaging. The Jeanoko eight-piece set, B0B72877KC, is £49.29 with 4.0 from 23 reviews. The title says HSS and walnut. The blade-material line says manganese steel, the bullets say beech, and a hardness line prints HRC58-6, a claim rather than a measurement. The eight flutes are not named. The SIIIXS eight-piece set, B0FNDC6JJ1, is £94.98 and 4.3 from 20. The bullets name a roughing gouge, a spindle gouge, a bowl gouge, a scraper, a parting tool and a skew, and the item-weight line says 18 g. There is no UK sentence about the cut. The DEEFIINE eight-piece set, B0C1NLHB45, at £109.98, puts high speed steel on one line and 4341 carbide inserts on another. One named Faithfull gouge tells you more than a case whose bullets disagree with the title.

If you will not sharpen

A grinder is part of owning an HSS gouge. If you will not grind, the captured alternative is a carbide insert. The DEEFIINE four-piece set, B0CH33MFNS, is £49.49, with 4.5 from 58. A UK review describes a small bowl in about an hour and more sanding, and fewer severe catches if you accept that sanding. The SIIIXS six-piece set, B0FBRX5NQ5, is £111.43 and 4.8 from 28, but the three United Kingdom reviews say the set has not been used. If you will keep a bevel sharp, start with a Faithfull roughing gouge and spindle gouge. If you will not grind, expect a scrape and more sanding. How the edges differ is on HSS vs carbide woodturning.

Common questions

What should I buy first if I only turn spindles?
Start with a roughing gouge and a spindle gouge. In this comparison those are the Faithfull 20 mm or 16 mm roughing gouge and the 8 mm spindle gouge, at £32.81, £25.86 and £18.87. A skew can wait. A bowl gouge is a different blank.
Is an eight-piece case better than two single gouges?
Only when the profiles are named and the steel line agrees with the title. The Toolzone six-piece set at £40.46 names its tools and still omits a bowl gouge. The Jeanoko eight-piece at £49.29 does not name the flutes, and the title says HSS while the material line says manganese steel. Two Faithfull gouges you can identify are the clearer first buy.
Do cheap HSS tools arrive sharp?
Faithfull’s bullets say the chisels need a final sharpen before first use. UK reviews on the 20 mm roughing gouge call the factory grind rough. On the 16 mm, some buyers say it arrived sharp and others say it scratches until it is ground. The Toolzone reviews say the six tools need honing on arrival. Plan a first grind.
When do I add a bowl gouge?
Add it when the work leaves the gap between centres and you want a bowl or a goblet. Record Power’s getting-started article makes that the next tool, not part of the first three. Thameside says a spindle roughing gouge must not hollow a bowl. The captured three-piece bowl set, and the ferrule complaints on it, are on the bowl page.
Is carbide an acceptable first buy if I will not grind?
Yes, if you accept the finish. The DEEFIINE four-piece set at £49.49 is the captured example, and a UK review describes fewer severe catches and more sanding on a small bowl. You replace inserts instead of grinding them. The £111.43 six-piece carbide set is 4.8 from 28, and the UK reviews have not used it. Carbide is not a substitute for a face shield.
