Bowl gouge woodturning

Updated: 24 October 2026

The tool already on your bench is often a spindle roughing gouge, and the blank on the lathe is a bowl. Those two do not belong together. A bowl gouge is the deep-flute tool for hollowing on a faceplate or a chuck. A spindle roughing gouge takes a square spindle down to round, and on cross-grain bowl work the tang can fail. This page is that choice for the listings in the [woodturning chisel comparison](/hub/hand-tools/woodturning-chisel). Peter F. used Thameside Woodturners, Record Power and HSE WIS28, with the UK reviews, on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Why the roughing gouge stays on spindles

Spindle grain runs along the lathe, between centres. Bowl grain is presented end-on as the tool enters the hollow. Thameside Woodturners states the rule plainly: a spindle roughing gouge must never hollow a bowl, because the tang can snap. Record Power’s getting-started article keeps the bowl gouge off the first shopping list. Between centres you need a roughing gouge, a spindle gouge and a parting tool. You add a bowl gouge when you want bowls or goblets. The Faithfull 20 mm, B002XFWANK, is £32.81, with 4.6 from 641 and bullets that say a spindle blank. The 16 mm, B00308PVSK, is £25.86, and one UK review that ordered 16 mm says 18 mm arrived. Neither bullet describes bowl hollowing. If you are about to push either into a bowl blank, put the tool down. The rest and the bevel are on how to use a woodturning chisel.

What a bowl gouge is for

A bowl gouge has a deeper flute than a spindle roughing gouge, so the edge can work inside a hollow, and the wing is ground swept back so the cut can travel from the rim toward the middle. That swept wing is a description of the tool, not a grind recipe. The sizes on the DEEFIINE three-piece title are 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch and 5/8 inch, also written as 10 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm. Record Power treats this as the tool you add, unless bowls are the reason you bought the lathe. The buying guide only points at that fork.

The three-piece set in this comparison

The DEEFIINE HSS03, B0D9T5MP9D, is £72.85, titled as three bowl gouges with a wooden box. amazon.co.uk shows 4.1 from 206 reviews. The included-components line says NO, and the number-of-items line says 1, against a title that says three pieces. UK reviews are the part you should believe over the box. Several say the brass ferrules were slack or fell off, including when the box was opened. The factory grind is called poor. One UK review calls the flute a V rather than a U, and says a 55 degree swept-back grind still did not help. Check every ferrule before the blank spins.

If you only have carbide

A carbide bar is not a bowl gouge. On the DEEFIINE four-piece set, B0CH33MFNS, at £49.49, a reviewer hollowed a small bowl in about an hour and said the piece needed more sanding and a light touch. Another UK beginner reported fewer severe catches and no sharpening. You can finish a small bowl that way. You should not call the bar a bowl gouge. The SIIIXS six-piece carbide set at £111.43 does not add a UK bowl story. Its three United Kingdom reviews have not used the tools. How the scrape compares with a ground HSS edge is on HSS vs carbide. Leave the spindle roughing gouge on spindle grain.

Common questions

Can a roughing gouge hollow a bowl?
No. Thameside Woodturners says a spindle roughing gouge must never hollow a bowl, because the tang can snap. The Faithfull 16 mm and 20 mm gouges here are that spindle tool. Their bullets describe spindle blanks. Put the roughing gouge down, or do not start the hollow.
What is the difference in the flute?
A bowl gouge is the deeper flute, with a wing ground swept back for the hollow. A spindle roughing gouge is shallower and rounds a spindle between centres. One UK review of the £72.85 set says the flute was a V, not a U. Look at the channel. The title is not a measurement.
Are the DEEFIINE 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8 inch tools a bowl set?
The title says three bowl gouges at those sizes, also written as 10, 12 and 16 mm, at £72.85, with a claimed side grind and M2 at 60 HRC. UK reviews say ferrules fell off and the grind was poor, and one calls the flute a V. The included-components line says NO, against a box in the bullets.
Why do reviews mention ferrules falling off?
UK reviews say the brass ferrules were slack or came off, including when the box was opened. The ferrule keeps the handle and the tang together. If one moves in your hand before the lathe starts, do not test it with a cut.
Is a carbide bar a bowl gouge?
No. The £49.49 DEEFIINE set uses replaceable inserts. A UK review hollowed a small bowl in about an hour and then sanded more than a shearing cut would ask. That is a scrape. A gloves note is about handling sharp inserts, not a safety ranking.
What grind did a UK reviewer try, and did it fix a V flute?
One reviewer said the flute was a V and that a 55 degree swept-back grind still did not help. That experiment is not a recommended angle, and it did not repair the flute. Regrinding the wrong channel does not create the U-flute you wanted.
When should a new bowl turner stop and get a lesson?
Stop when your only gouge is a spindle roughing gouge, when a ferrule is loose, or when a catch repeats. The AWGB checklist says the tool is supported before it touches, and to stop if you are unsure. A tutor can see the wing. The wrong tool fails at the tang.
