VDE screwdriver buying guide

Updated: October 2026

An amazon.co.uk title that says VDE, 1,000 V or GS is the wrong place to stop. A VDE screwdriver buying guide splits three questions: what is printed on the handle, which tip the screws in your house use, and whether the neon screwdriver in the lid is a different tool. The twelve-row table, with shelf prices in GBP, is on the [VDE screwdriver comparison](/hub/hand-tools/vde-screwdriver). Products Compared checked these listings on 16 October 2026. What the marks have to say

The British identifier is BS EN IEC 60900:2018: tools for a skilled person, up to 1,000 V AC and 1,500 V DC. That is an insulation rating, not a UK statute that lets you leave a 230 V circuit live. VDE is a third-party mark beside that standard. GS is a voluntary tested-safety mark, not a performance seal, not CE, and not UK law or UKCA. The wording here is uneven, so read the handle after the parcel arrives. IEC 60900 appears for the WEDO single driver and for ArmaKit. Some Wera listings state individual testing or a water-bath test. Bahco's bullets say VDE-tested and do not print a standard number. Gunpla's reviews dispute that the expected marks are on the tools. A logo still fails if the tip is a PH2 in a PZ2 screw.

Match the tip to a UK screw

UK socket and switch screws are often Pozidriv or slotted, not one official size and not automatically Phillips. Match the blade to the slot you can see. A Pozidriv screw shows extra radial ticks. A Phillips tip is tapered and is meant to cam out. A Pozidriv tip does not sit properly in a plain Phillips screw either. The recess is on the Pozidriv versus Phillips page. Printed Pozidriv sizes appear for Gunpla (PZ0, PZ1 and PZ2), Wera 05051576001 (PZ1 and PZ2), the BILITOOLS nine-piece (PZ0 and PZ1, not PZ2), and as two Pozidriv bits on Anesty. Bahco's piece list and the slim Wera's specification table do not settle the tips. BLOSTM's cross-head line is not a PZ size until the components list names PZ. Plus-minus, the combined slot and cross on many consumer-unit terminals, is a third tip. Open the consumer unit page instead of forcing a PZ2 into that screw.

Slim shaft, tester and interchangeable bits

A slim shaft is a reduced-diameter sleeve so a recessed screw is easier to reach. It is not a higher insulation rating. The two listings above about £40 are a slim set and a pliers kit. Ordinary faceplate screws may never need the slimmer shaft. A neon tester in the case is a single-pole device. It is not the drivers' insulation rating, and it does not prove a circuit dead. Faithfull labels its own tester as not VDE certified. Anesty does not make that split, so you cannot copy Faithfull's sentence onto Anesty. Anesty is the only interchangeable set here. A fixed driver has the sleeve on one blade. A bare bit is not covered by a sentence on the handle. Isolation stays on how to use a VDE screwdriver.

What the price bands are buying

Shelf prices fall into three bands, and the band is not a quality grade. About £9 to £17 is a first set or a spare, from WEDO at £8.97 to Anesty at £16.90, and not a printed Pozidriv list in every case. About £24 to £28 covers the BILITOOLS nine-piece, the two Wera six-piece sets, and Bahco at £28.25, whose tips stay unresolved. The slim Wera is £41.80. The BILITOOLS pliers kit at £55.99 is a different purchase. Chipped tips in some reviews are a complaint, not a failure rate. Who should take which set is on the best VDE screwdriver page.

Common questions

What should be printed on the tool, not only in the title?
Look for a double triangle, a 1,000 V figure, the maker, and BS EN IEC 60900 or IEC 60900 on the handle. VDE tested in a bullet is weaker than marks you can see after delivery. If the handle is plain, treat the insulation line as unconfirmed.
Is GS the same as VDE, and is either a UK law?
No. VDE is a third-party mark beside the insulation standard. GS is a German tested-safety mark, not a performance seal and not CE. Neither is a UK statute and neither is UKCA. You still have to read the handle.
Do I need Pozidriv for a UK socket faceplate?
Often, though not as a single official size. A Phillips tip cams out of a Pozidriv recess. DIYnot cites about 5.5 mm by 1.0 mm and also 4 mm for slotted blades. If the screw shows the extra ticks, you need PZ. If the cross is plain, you need Phillips.
Is a slim shaft safer, or only easier to fit?
It is easier to fit into a recessed screw. It does not raise the insulation rating. In this comparison the slim set is one of the two listings above about £40. Buy it when reach is the problem.
Does a bundled neon tester count as the insulation rating?
No. The tester is a separate tool, and a single-pole neon does not prove a circuit dead. Faithfull says its own tester is not VDE certified. Anesty does not print that split, so do not assume another pen shares the drivers' claim. Proving dead needs a two-pole tester.
When is a bit set not the same as a fixed driver?
When the blade you fit is not the blade the rating was described for. Anesty is the only interchangeable set in these twelve. Armeg, outside this comparison, keeps its rating only with that maker's blades locked in. Do not copy that sentence onto Anesty. Do check that the shaft in your hand carries marks.
