Torx screwdriver set: sizes, pin and handle

Updated: October 2026

You have a star screw in a vacuum cover, a bike part or a piece of trim, and the cross-head in the drawer does not fit. A torx screwdriver set is the right search, and the piece count in the title is the wrong first filter. You need the T-codes in the box, whether the tip is solid or bored for a centre pin, and whether a handle is included. The twelve amazon.co.uk listings in our [Torx screwdriver set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/torx-screwdriver-set) run from £5.02 to £19.90. The Products Compared editorial team read those listings on 15 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What a Torx set is for

A Torx driver turns a hexalobular screw, the six-lobe star recess in ISO 10664:2014. Households in the UK meet it on appliance housings, bikes, trim and small devices that will not take a Pozidriv or a flat blade. Screwfix’s guide asks you to identify the screw before you buy the driver. If there is a pin, read security Torx and standard Torx. A cross-head that only looks close is Torx, Pozidriv or Phillips.

Size span comes before piece count

Count the T-codes, not the pieces. T10 to T30 cover many housings. T5 to T9 are the add-on for small covers, and T40 is the add-on for larger fixings. None of these twelve listings includes T45 or T50. ISO 10664 point-to-point values include T20 at 3.95 mm and T40 at 6.75 mm, so a loose T15 is not close enough to a T20. A 40-piece title can still be a precision kit whose plain Torx stops at T5. Bosch’s five drivers, TX10 to TX30 at £19.90, leave you short on T40. The seven-piece GURADESIGN, at £11.99, has no T40 and no T5 to T7.

Plain tip, bored tip, or a mixed kit

A solid tip seats in a plain star. A centre pin blocks it. A bored security tip is for that pin, and a higher piece count does not drill that hole for you. The Jorest kits mix small Torx, named TR security sizes and other drives. They suit a phone or glasses, and they are the wrong lever for a T40 housing screw. Anesty’s title says tamperproof while the specification line says Head Style: Torx. The US PRO listing says the T8 is not tamper-proof.

Fixed driver, long bit, or precision handle

Fixed drivers suit repeated hand work from T10 to T40. A 100 mm bit reaches a recessed screw only when a holder is in the box or already on your bench. The huoanpo listing is 100 mm bits from T6 to T40 at £6.59, and a UK review says the pictured handle was not included. Treat a bit set as bits until the live page lists a handle. Amtech’s T5 to T10 drivers include a review of a T5 tip that warped on laptop screws. Short Jorest bits should not be leaned on like a full-size T30. Vacuum and washer covers are on the Torx screwdriver for appliances page.

Steel, magnet and case

Most of the budget fixed sets here say chrome vanadium. Bosch’s bullets say S2 and the material field says alloy steel. Wonkee Donkee’s general note treats S2 as harder and more brittle and chrome vanadium as tougher. That is not a hardness figure for these drivers. Magnetic often means a block in the box. SWANLAKE reviews say the tips do not hold a screw until that block is used. The GURADESIGN 13-piece set at £9.89 has no case in the listing. Screwfix’s Wera 367/6 at £27.99 including VAT sits outside these twelve listings.

Common questions

What sizes should a general UK Torx set include?
For housings, bikes and trim, look for T10 to T30 first, then T5 to T9 and T40. None of the twelve sets here includes T45 or T50. A set that stops at T30, including the seven-piece GURADESIGN at £11.99, leaves T40 out. Bosch’s five drivers stop at TX30 and skip T27.
Do I need security tips as well as plain Torx?
Only if the screw has a pin in the centre. A plain driver will not start that screw. A bored tip matches the pin, and it is the weaker choice on a large tight fastener. Jorest kits name TR sizes and stay precision kits. Anesty’s title says tamperproof and the spec line says Torx, so do not assume every tip is bored.
Is a 40-piece kit better than the five-piece Bosch set?
They are different tools. The Jorest 40-piece kits at £9.99 mix small Torx, security Torx up to TR20 and other drives. Bosch’s five drivers are TX10 to TX30 at £19.90, with a 2-year warranty on the listing. The 40-piece kit suits phones and glasses. Bosch matches those five codes and still misses T40 and T27.
Why do some magnetic sets include a separate block?
The tips may arrive unmagnetised. SWANLAKE reviews say you use the included block first. The GURADESIGN 13-piece set includes a demagnetiser for when a tip grabs a screw you wanted to leave. If the screw still will not stay on the tip, match the size before you blame the magnet.
Does the photograph’s handle come with a bit set?
Not always. A UK review of the huoanpo 100 mm bits says the pictured handle was not in the box. A 100 mm bit reaches a recessed screw only if you already have a holder. The T5–T40 GURADESIGN and SWANLAKE sets do not need a separate handle.
