A Torx screwdriver for appliances starts with your screw

Updated: October 2026

You are in front of a vacuum brush head or a washing-machine panel, and the screw is a six-point star. A Torx screwdriver for appliances is the driver that fits that screw, not a code copied from a spare-parts page. Sellers name sizes for Shark, Dyson and white goods. Your screw may differ, and it may have a pin. This page reads that screw, then what buyers of the sets in our [Torx screwdriver set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/torx-screwdriver-set) opened. The Products Compared editorial team wrote it on 16 October 2026 from amazon.co.uk review themes. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

There is no single appliance size

Henry Bags sells an eight-piece set for Shark repairs and says pinned screws need tamper-proof tips, naming T10, T15 and T20. That is their set, not every Shark. Grantleigh’s T8 to T20 set is sold for Dyson cordless vacuums, with T10, T15 and T20 described as security drivers. TDSpares sells T10 to T50 keys for some fridge, dishwasher and oven hinges. Those keys sit outside this comparison, and the span runs past T40. None of those shops has seen your screw. The buying guide filters span and tip type.

Check for a pin, then the stamp

Look into the star before you choose a tip. A post in the middle is a security screw, and a plain driver of the same T-code bottoms on it. You need a bored tip in that size. Why a bored tip is weaker on a large tight screw is on the security Torx and standard Torx page. The US PRO set fits tamper-proof and standard Torx, except the T8, which is not tamper-proof, so a pinned T8 is outside that driver. Once the pin and the stamp agree, seat the driver as the how to use a Torx screwdriver page describes.

What buyers in this comparison actually opened

Review text is one job, not a chart for your model. US PRO reviews mention Shark brush-head repairs. A Jorest 24-piece kit opened a Shark cordless head. On the Jorest 40-piece kit whose bullets name S2 steel, a reviewer used a T8 on a Dyson DC41. The GURADESIGN 13-piece set was used on a washing machine, including a Bosch washer. A DC41 T8 does not set the size for a later Dyson, and one Bosch washer does not fix every front-loader. Confirm the pin and the stamp on the screw you can see.

Fixed driver or a long bit

Housing screws often sit in a recess. A long blade or a 100 mm bit can seat when a short bit hits the plastic first. The huoanpo listing is bits, and a review says the pictured handle was not in the box. Without a handle the tip climbs out. A precision kit can open a small cover and will not serve as a T30 lever. Use a fixed driver for that larger stamp, and stop when the tip climbs.

When to stop

Unplug a mains appliance before the cover comes off, and do not start if you cannot show that it is dead. Leave gas appliances closed. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, in the section on satisfactory quality, is about the screwdriver, not permission to open a sealed machine. Stop when the screw is rounding. If you lack the bored tip, or the stamp is outside your set, the wrong driver is the failure. An engineer takes over for gas, for mains you cannot isolate, and for wiring you cannot identify.

Common questions

What Torx size opens a Shark vacuum?
There is no single size for every Shark. Henry Bags names T10, T15 and T20 and says pinned screws need tamper-proof tips. US PRO reviews mention Shark brush heads, and a Jorest 24-piece kit opened a Shark cordless head. Match the stamp and any centre pin on your machine.
Do washing-machine screws use the same size as a vacuum?
No. Reviews used the GURADESIGN 13-piece set, T5 to T40, on a washing machine, including a Bosch washer. That is one job, not a code for every panel. Read the screw you can see, including any pin.
How do I know if the housing screw is security Torx?
Look into the star. A post in the centre means the screw is pinned, and a solid tip will bottom out. You need a bored tip of the same size. The US PRO listing says its T8 is not tamper-proof. Do not snap the pin out.
Is a precision kit enough for a vacuum head?
It can be, for a small cover, and it is the wrong lever for a large tight screw. Buyers used a Jorest kit on a Shark cordless head and a T8 from another Jorest kit on a Dyson DC41. A short bit may hit the plastic before it seats. A pictured handle that was missing from the box does not count.
Can I do this with the power lead in?
No. Unplug the machine and satisfy yourself that it is dead before a cover comes off. Gas appliances stay closed. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 speaks to the quality of the tool, not to work on a live or gas appliance.
When should an engineer take over?
Call an engineer for gas appliances, for any mains machine you cannot prove is dead, and for a screw that is already rounding. A T8 used on one Dyson DC41 does not make the next machine a DIY strip-down. If you lack the bored tip, buy that driver rather than forcing a plain one.
