Torque screwdriver vs torque wrench

Updated: October 2026

You have one fastener and two tools in the search results. Torque screwdriver vs torque wrench is a decision about the head and the newton-metre figure. If the fastener is a screw near the bottom of the scale, use a screwdriver whose scale contains that figure. If it is a nut up in the tens or hundreds of newton metres, use a wrench. This page does not review the eleven listings. They sit on the [torque screwdriver comparison](/hub/hand-tools/torque-screwdriver). The Products Compared editorial team compared fastener types and published figures on 16 October 2026. There is no laboratory test. Use the screwdriver on the screw

Heamar’s buyers’ guide draws the line by the fastener. Screwdrivers are for screws. Wrenches are for nuts and bolts. On this shelf that means terminals, bicycle bolts, scope rings and small bench screws. The useful windows run from GROWNEER’s 0.3 Nm up to about 6 Nm. Two Aurlloct bullets say 8 Nm and the item-torque field says 1.5 Nm, so that 8 Nm line is not a clean ceiling. A wrench whose lowest mark is 20 Nm is the wrong instrument for a 2 Nm screw. The window, once you want a screwdriver, is in the buying guide.

Use the wrench on the nut

Wheel nuts are a wrench. Barum’s usual band is about 110–120 Nm, a typical car rather than every car, and far above this shelf. The Wera 7441 stops at 3.0 Nm. Draper Expert stops at 5 Nm. Draper 65372 stops at 5.0 Nm. Most click sets stop at 6 Nm. A socket adapter does not turn them into a wheel-nut tool. A 6 Nm screwdriver on a 110 Nm wheel has stopped at about a twentieth of the figure. A 3/8-inch wrench comparison is on torque wrench 3/8 inch.

A 6 Nm stem bolt sits on the last mark

Park Tool treats about 4–6 Nm as a typical threadless stem, and 6 Nm is the top of a 1–6 Nm scale. Heamar’s not-above-80% rule puts 80% of 6 Nm at 4.8 Nm, so a true 6 Nm stem wants room above 6. Some stems on that table are 8–10 Nm, which a 1–6 Nm screwdriver does not cover. Aurlloct’s 8 Nm bullet clashes with an item field of 1.5 Nm. Read the stem. Do not set every stem to 5 Nm.

One choice, then the next page

Use a torque screwdriver when the printed figure sits inside the scale, clear of the last mark, and the head takes a screw bit or an insulated blade. Use a torque wrench when the figure is a wheel nut, or any bolt this shelf cannot show. If the handbook says 110 Nm and you only own a screwdriver, stop. Storage and the first signal are on how to use a torque screwdriver.

Common questions

When do I pick the screwdriver?
When the fastener is a screw, the head takes a bit or an insulated blade, and the printed figure sits inside a screwdriver scale with room above it. On this shelf that is the world of terminals, scope rings, small bench screws and many stem bolts around a few newton metres. A 2 Nm screw is a screwdriver job. It is a poor job for a wrench whose scale starts at 20 Nm.
When do I pick the wrench?
When the fastener is a nut or a bolt whose figure sits in the tens or hundreds of newton metres, or anywhere above the scales printed here. Wheel nuts are the obvious case. Barum’s usual band is about 110–120 Nm, and your handbook can differ. A 1/4-inch wrench can still be right for a small bolt if the screwdriver you own cannot show that figure clear of its last mark.
Can a 1–6 Nm screwdriver tighten a car wheel?
No. A typical wheel-nut figure is about 110–120 Nm, and that band is not every car. Every screwdriver in this comparison tops out around 3 Nm, 5 Nm or 6 Nm. Two bullets say 8 Nm and then contradict themselves. A socket adapter on a screwdriver handle does not multiply the scale. You need a wrench and the figure in the vehicle handbook, then a re-check.
Is a bike stem a screwdriver job or a wrench job?
Often a screwdriver, because Park Tool’s typical threadless stem is about 4–6 Nm and the head is a screw. Read the stem. If it says 4 or 5 Nm, a 1–6 Nm driver can contain it. If it says 6 Nm, that is the last mark on a 1–6 Nm tool, and a higher scale is the better place to set it. If it says 8–10 Nm, a 1–6 Nm screwdriver does not cover it.
What if the stem says 8 Nm?
A 1–6 Nm screwdriver cannot show 8 Nm. Do not set it to 6 and hope. Some stems on Park Tool’s table are 8–10 Nm, which is outside this shelf’s clean windows. A small wrench with the right bit is the honest tool, set to the stem’s figure. The Aurlloct bullets that say 8 Nm also carry an item field of 1.5 Nm, so they are not a tidy answer to an 8 Nm stem.
What if I only own a big wrench and the screw is 2 Nm?
Do not use it. A wrench whose useful range starts far above 2 Nm cannot signal that small figure. You will overshoot, or you will click at a value the screw was never given. Borrow or buy a screwdriver whose scale contains 2 Nm away from the last mark. The same limit applies in reverse: a 6 Nm screwdriver does not stand in for a 110 Nm wheel.
