Ratchet screwdriver for tight spaces: three shapes

Updated: 24 October 2026

The hinge screw sits against the carcass, a stubby driver still hits the shelf, and the bit never quite meets the head. A ratchet screwdriver for tight spaces is a change of shape, not a finer click on the same handle. You need a shorter inline tool, a shaft that lengthens and then shortens, or a right-angle offset. The [screwdriver ratchets comparison](/hub/hand-tools/screwdriver-ratchets) holds the 12 listings. Peter F. wrote this on 22 October 2026 from the captured amazon.co.uk files and UK DIY guides, not from a measured mock-up of your cupboard. A short swing is not the same as no room

A ratchet earns its place when you can still swing the handle, only not through a full turn. Where a bullet states 36 teeth, a rule of thumb says the return is about 10 degrees. The rule is not a test of the OSDUE or the Bosch. It only helps if your hand can move those 10 degrees. If the handle cannot enter the gap, more teeth do nothing. Compel’s stubby article, a guide and not a measurement of any ASIN here, says a stubby still needs roughly 30–50 mm of handle height, and that an offset is for still less room. Do not draw those millimetres onto the DeWalt or the OSDUE. Collar settings are on how to use a ratchet screwdriver.

Inline, telescoping, then offset

Start inline if you can see the screw and the handle has a few centimetres of swing. The bare Bosch, the clip set and the Bosch magazine each quote an 80 mm shaft. That is a straight line, not an offset. The DeWalt DWHT68001-0 is the telescoping bar, captured at £20.92 and 4.6 from 43 reviews. The bits are PH1, PH2, SL4, SL6 and SQ2, in 25 mm and 50 mm, with no Pozidriv. UK reviews say the fully retracted position has no positive lock, and that pulling a bit out pulls the shaft to the first stop. A shaft that will not stay short is not a stubby. The OSDUE is the right angle, captured at £3.79, 4.5 from 2,831 reviews. The body is 110 mm, the bullet says 36 teeth, and the box has no bits. One reviewer found it too thick, and one wanted a stronger magnet. The 150 Nm field conflicts with a 60 g tool. Do not treat it as capacity. Which shape to buy is on the best ratchet screwdriver page.

The palm-sized ratchet in a box

The Bosch 26-piece set, model 2607017331, captured at £16.79, is 4.6 from 12,877 reviews. The box has 19 colour-coded 25 mm bits in Phillips and Pozidriv plus slotted, Torx and hex, four nutsetters, and a ratchet reviewers describe as barely wider than a palm. The length field says 4.77 inches. It suits modest torque in an awkward corner. Reviewers say it is not for high torque, and the bullet points it at basic tasks. A palm-wide body has less leverage than the 80 mm Bosch handle. It is easy to buy thinking you have a full screwdriver. Part number 2607017322 on the listing does not match the model number, so match the bit list on the box you receive.

A flexible shaft is a third compromise

The VMAN 40-in-1, captured at £15.74, claims magnetic parts that adjust in length for tight spots, with Phillips, flat, hex and Torx and no Pozidriv size named. It is 4.6 from 405 reviews. A flexible shaft can snake past a shelf, and it also wanders, so pressure that should sit on the screw goes into keeping the tip seated. It is a compromise beside a rigid offset. One review says the housing split under light use. Stop, and use the short-term right to reject under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, if you are still inside that window. Stop if the offset is too thick, the telescoping shaft will not stay short, or the palm ratchet cannot make the turn. More teeth will not open a gap the handle cannot enter.

Common questions

Do I need an offset or a stubby?
If a short straight handle can still stand on the screw, a stubby or a retracted shaft is the first try. Compel’s guide puts that height at roughly 30–50 mm, as a guide, not as the height of these ASINs. If the only room is beside the screw, you need an offset. In this basket that is the OSDUE, and it comes without bits.
Will more teeth fix a screw I cannot reach?
No. Extra teeth shorten the swing you need once the handle is already in the gap. A 36-tooth bullet is about 10 degrees on a rule of thumb, and only if you can swing those 10 degrees. If the handle cannot enter, change the shape.
Does the OSDUE include a Phillips bit?
No. The bullet says accessories are not included. Reviewers who expected a Phillips bit from the title had to use their own 1/4 inch bits. The 36-tooth right-angle body is the product. Budget for a bit you already trust, and ignore the 150 Nm field.
Why does the DeWalt get longer when I pull the bit?
UK reviews say removing a bit pulls the telescoping shaft out to the first stop, and that the fully retracted position has no positive lock. You push the shaft back. That is the tool, with 43 reviews behind the listing, not a mistake in your grip.
What if even the offset is too thick?
One OSDUE reviewer found exactly that. A thicker right angle cannot invent clearance. Look for a slimmer side-operated offset, such as the Axminster example outside this basket, or stop if the screw is a fixing you cannot risk. Do not quote 150 Nm as a way through a gap.
