Pozidriv or Phillips for UK furniture and chipboard

Updated: 24 October 2026

The cross-head bit sits in the furniture screw, turns twice, and then cams out, leaving a bright ring in the recess. You are assembling a UK cabinet or a chipboard hinge, and the question is Pozidriv or Phillips. The [screwdriver ratchets comparison](/hub/hand-tools/screwdriver-ratchets) lists what each amazon.co.uk set actually names. This page is only the recess. Peter F. wrote it on 22 October 2026 from those supply lines and UK fastener guides, not from a torque lab. A qualifying purchase through our links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The ticks are the whole test

Look at the screw head in daylight, not at the silhouette of the cross. A Pozidriv screw has four small ticks between the main arms. A Phillips screw has the cross and no ticks. The bit should say PZ or PH, often with the size. bolts.co.uk uses that tick test for ordinary woodscrews and chipboard screws in the UK. Do not treat the tips as interchangeable. Pozidriv has extra contact faces so the bit stays seated under a push. Phillips was designed so that a driver can cam out when the torque gets high, which protects the screw in a factory and ruins the head in a kitchen. If the ticks are there, use Pozidriv. If they are not, use Phillips. Storage and price sit on the ratchet screwdriver buying guide.

What goes wrong when the tip is close enough

A Phillips bit will often start a Pozidriv screw because the cross is almost the same shape. After a few turns the tip rides up the flanks, the recess chews, and pressing harder makes the cam-out worse. That is the usual flat-pack failure, on the first cabinet rather than after years of use. The other way round, a Pozidriv bit in a Phillips screw does not drop into the recess. It sits proud, and the extra ribs mark the cross. A magnetic tip holds the screw on the bit while you find the hole. It does not add the missing faces inside the recess. Neither does a finer ratchet, a longer shaft, or a 50 Nm sentence on the listing. If the head is already rounded, stop. A bigger handle on the same wrong bit finishes the damage. Back the screw out if it will move, and replace it while the board is still sound.

Which ratchet sets in this basket name PZ

Three listings name Pozidriv in the supply line. The Bosch 1600A027PP magazine lists PZ1, PZ2 and PZ3 with slotted, Torx and hex, and it does not list Phillips. Captured price £20.62, 4.7 from 3,880 reviews. The Bosch clip set lists PH1 to PH3 and PZ1 to PZ3. Captured price £14.87, 4.7 from 430 reviews, with one breakage report. The Bosch 26-piece box lists both families, plus nutsetters, on a palm-sized ratchet at £16.79, 4.6 from 12,877 reviews. Skip a Phillips-only mix when the screw has ticks. The Amazon Basics 12-in-1 names PH1 to PH3 and does not name Pozidriv. The DeWalt names PH1, PH2, slotted and SQ2. VMAN and both KELIN colours do not name a Pozidriv size. The Bahco title says six bits and the amazon bullets do not name them. A UK review lists PZ1 and PZ2. That is a shopper report. Which handle to buy once you know you need PZ2 is the best ratchet screwdriver page.

Square, Torx and hex are separate recesses

SQ2 on the DeWalt is a square recess, not Pozidriv and not Phillips. It will not rescue a chipboard screw. Use it in a square socket, in the 25 mm or 50 mm length. Torx is a star. The Bosch magazine includes TX15, TX20 and TX25. Those bits do not fit a Pozidriv hinge. Hex is for a hex socket, not a cross-head. A set that advertises Torx, hex and Phillips can be right for a bike or a laptop and still be the wrong purchase for a UK kitchen carcass. Match one screw on the bench before you commit the cabinet. When the recess is right and the handle still will not fit, change the shape of the driver.

Common questions

How do I see which screw I have?
Look for four ticks between the arms of the cross. Ticks mean Pozidriv. A plain cross means Phillips. The bit should carry PZ or PH and a size. On flat-pack and chipboard in the UK, PZ2 is the size people meet most often, which is a common pattern Compel describes, not a rule that every screw in the box is PZ2.
Can a Phillips bit do a Pozidriv screw for one piece of furniture?
It will often start, then cam out and round the head. One cabinet is enough to spoil a hinge. If the ticks are there, change to PZ2 before the recess is bright. Pressing harder keeps the wrong bit in contact for another half-turn and then throws it out.
Can I use Pozidriv in a Phillips screw?
The Pozidriv bit does not seat. The extra ribs hold it proud of a Phillips cross. Forcing it marks the recess. Use PH2, or whichever Phillips size fills the cross without rocking. Close is not a fit on either pairing.
Which sets in this comparison include PZ2?
The Bosch magazine names PZ1 to PZ3 and no Phillips. The Bosch clip set and the Bosch 26-piece box name both Phillips and Pozidriv, including PZ2. The Amazon Basics 12-in-1, the DeWalt, the VMAN and the KELIN bullets do not name PZ2. The Bahco sizes are in a UK review, not in the amazon bullets.
Does a magnetic tip fix a wrong bit?
No. The magnet holds the screw onto the bit so you can place it. Cam-out happens inside the recess, between the tip and the flanks. A stronger magnet on a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw still rounds the head. Change the bit.
