Paving hammer vs paving maul

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have seen a rubber mallet around £12 on amazon.co.uk and a long rubber hammer around £40 to £80 on a trade site, and both names say paving. A paving hammer vs paving maul choice is a mass choice. Here the hammer is a hand mallet under about 1.5 kg. The maul is about 6 kg on a handle near a metre long, and it is not an ASIN. The rows stay on the [Paving hammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/paving-hammer). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Peter F. used those listings and UK trade pages on 22 October 2026. We did not swing either tool.

Two names, two masses

Pavingexpert already separates them. A maul knocks flags down. Lighter mallets deal with blocks and light taps. This amazon.co.uk set is the light class: BLOSTM at 453 g, S&R heads at 560 g and 910 g, Halder rows at 1.48 kg and 1.42 kg. None of those is a maul. Tooltime lists a 6 kg maul at £39.99, with a 990 mm handle. Atlas Trading lists a Roughneck 6 kg maul at £69.25 including VAT. Those pages are not amazon.co.uk ASINs.

When the hand mallet is the right tool

Use the hand mallet for blocks on sand, for porcelain and pale flags, and for any unit you can seat with a short blow. On dots of mortar it only loads the gap. For sandstone or porcelain, you want the pale side: rubber mallet for paving slabs. The BLOSTM highlight names slabs at 453 g. An OX review of daily slab and kerb work does not show that the head weighs 6 kg. Edging pieces can stay on the hand tool. A Halder 3012 review says it suits edging and is not heavy enough for normal kerbs. Normal kerbs leave the folder.

When you want the maul

Want the maul when the flag is thick, the kerb is concrete, and a hand blow will not bring it down without a long series of hits. You stand over the unit on a shaft of about 900–990 mm, instead of kneeling with a 320 mm handle. At work, a 6 kg maul through a shift is a manual-handling load, and PUWER 1998 treats the hammer as work equipment. A drive or highway kerbs is the point to call a crew.

What this comparison cannot sell you

There is no 6 kg ASIN in the folder. The nearest heavy objects are the Halder 3012 at 1.48 kg and £44.28, and the Halder 3013 at 1.42 kg and £46.47, both 60 mm insert mallets. A buyer who changed 3013 faces three times since 2021 was still swinging a hand hammer. Thor at £41.30 is the same idea, not a 990 mm maul. The top pick is on the best paving hammer page. Listings that disagree with themselves are the paving hammer buying guide. Buy the maul from a merchant when the kerb is a real kerb.

Common questions

Is a paving hammer the same as a paving maul?
No. In this folder a paving hammer is a hand rubber mallet, or a soft-face hammer, from about 450 g to about 1.5 kg. A paving maul is about 6 kg on a handle around 900–990 mm, sold on trade sites. Pavingexpert treats them as different tools. The shared word paving on a title does not make them interchangeable.
Can a 16 oz mallet bed a concrete kerb?
A 16 oz mallet, such as the BLOSTM at 453 g, is for slabs and lighter taps. One review already calls that mallet light for some jobs. Edging kerbs show up in hand-mallet reviews, including a Halder comment that draws the line at normal kerbs. A full-size concrete kerb is maul work. Expecting 453 g to do it means more blows and a higher chance of a marked or unseated unit.
What does a 6 kg maul weigh in the hand compared with these mallets?
Six kilograms is roughly four Halder mallets, or about thirteen times the 453 g BLOSTM, on a shaft near a metre rather than a 320 mm handle. You swing it with two hands, standing up. It is not a second 16 oz rubber head.
Are the £40 mauls on trade sites in this comparison’s amazon list?
No. Tooltime’s 6 kg maul at £39.99, the Atlas Roughneck at £69.25 including VAT, and a BHL Draper listing at £81.16 are merchant examples captured for this research. They are not ASINs in the comparison. Prices on those sites can move. The hand-mallet prices in the folder are the saved amazon.co.uk figures.
Will a maul crack porcelain if I use it like a mallet?
It can. Porcelain and pale flags want a short tap from a soft, pale face on a full bed. A 6 kg head swung like a kerb maul is too much mass for that edge. Rubber does not make the blow harmless. Use the maul on thick flags and concrete kerbs. Use a hand mallet on porcelain you are seating to a line.
Which amazon listing is the closest thing to a maul here?
None of them is close in mass. The heaviest agreeing figures are the Halder 3012 at 1.48 kg and the Halder 3013 at 1.42 kg, both 60 mm insert mallets around £44 to £47. Reviews use them on kerb edges and slabs, and one review says the 3012 is not heavy enough for normal kerbs. That is the top of this folder, not a substitute for a 6 kg maul.
