Silicone sealant tool kit: what to check before you buy

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at a bath, a sink or a worktop where the bead has blackened or pulled away, and the amazon.co.uk titles mostly say 5-in-1. A silicone sealant tool kit is a cutter for the old bead plus a few pads for the new one. A grout saw is a different tool, even in the same search. This page sets that spec and does not name a winner. The [joint scraper comparison](/hub/hand-tools/joint-scraper) ranks the seven listings. Prices are amazon.co.uk shelf figures in GBP. Peter F. has not lab-tested the kits. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

Six of the seven listings are sealant kits. NkHui at £12.99 is a 22-piece grout saw set for joints it claims are 1–3 mm, with four reviews and no profiling pads. Hard, sandy fill is a rake. A bead that peels needs an edge that cuts and pads that shape. Count the cutter and the pads separately. The cutter lifts the cured bead. The pads profile the fresh one. A paint scraper or a weed puller does not do this job. For one bath, a metal edge, a knife you already own, and two or three pad sizes are enough.

Metal edge or plastic edge

Homebuilding’s UK trial, on tools outside this seven, found a stainless head cut cured sealant more cleanly than plastic when pulled towards you. Plastic was kinder where a scratch would show. That is not a promise every stainless edge here is safe on every bath. Cramer’s Profiling Kit 7 at £21.95, with 4.6 from 4,193 ratings, is outside this seven and says not to use their removal tool on acrylic or plastic. In this set a metal edge is stated on the ORHOMELIFE kits, KLRStec, Tool Depot and Lookka. SD110 also lists a plastic scraper. A will-not-scratch line is a claim. Pull a short length first.

Pads, counted on their own

The codes in this set are 3R, 6R, 10R, 13R and 17R. A 15R pad is listed only on ORHOMELIFE SD002-WT. The ABS kit is also £11.89 and lists five pads without 15R. An R mark is a seller code, not a British Standard. illbruck’s practical bathroom fillet is about 4–5 mm on each face. A 17 mm pad is a poor default unless the gap is that wide. ISO 11600 and BS EN 15651-3 describe the cartridge, not the scraper. KLRStec, Lookka, Tool Depot and SD110 do not share one pad list.

Handle, bag, conflicting lines and price

KLRStec at £19.99 includes a belt-clip bag at 160 g. SD110 at £16.99 has a silicone-wrapped handle and prints 420 g. Neither fact is a ranking. Lookka at £7.45 prints no on included components, while the title names a stainless head and five pads. Tool Depot at £8.99 prints 18 g beside a parcel of 22.4 x 13.79 x 3.3 cm. Leave both lines as printed. The Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, gives 30 days to reject goods that are not as described. A stubborn bead is not that fault. One bath does not need the Cramer box if you already own a knife and a metal-edged kit with a few pads.

Common questions

What should a silicone sealant tool kit contain for one bath or sink?
Look for a metal cutting edge, a plastic edge if the surface is acrylic, and a few pads near a 4–5 mm fillet. A knife you already own can start the cut in a corner, kept off the glaze. A 22-piece grout saw does not finish that bead. Sixteen trade shapes are optional unless the gaps change all week.
Is a metal scraper better than a plastic one?
Homebuilding found a stainless head cleaner on cured sealant when it was pulled towards you, and a plastic head weaker on that pull. Plastic is kinder on acrylic and on residue. Cramer’s warning against acrylic applies to their removal tool. If your bath maker forbids metal, follow that sheet.
What do 3R, 6R, 10R, 13R, 15R and 17R mean?
They are seller marks in this set, not a British Standard. Cramer prints millimetres instead. 15R is listed only on ORHOMELIFE SD002-WT. The other £11.89 ORHOMELIFE kit omits it. illbruck’s practical fillet is about 4–5 mm on each face, so the largest code is not the default bath pad.
Can the same kit remove cement grout?
No. Cement grout powders and needs a carbide or tungsten rake. NkHui is the only grout set among the seven, and it lists no profiling pads. A tungsten saw tears a silicone bead instead of shaping it. Buy the two tools separately.
Why do two kits at £11.89 not match?
Both ORHOMELIFE boxes are £11.89 and 150 g. SD002-WT lists six pads, including 15R, and 4.2 from 1,035 reviews. The ABS kit lists five pads without 15R, plus a nozzle cap, and 4.3 from 48 reviews. Both titles say 5-in-1. The pad list and the review count are the difference.
Is a £21.95 trade kit necessary for one bath?
Cramer at £21.95, with 4.6 from 4,193 ratings, is a ceiling outside this seven. One bath does not need it if you own a knife and a metal-edged kit with pads. City Plumbing at £27.06 including VAT is another shelf. Extra shapes do not dry the joint.
Will the kit leave the joint residue-free and scratch-free?
No score here measures a bare, unmarked joint. A thin film usually remains, and new silicone will not bond to it. A will-not-scratch line is a listing claim. Try a short pull and stop if the glaze marks. A components line that prints no, or 18 g beside a large parcel, is a description conflict, not proof the bead cannot be cleared.
