Engineer's hammer buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a punch or a cold chisel on the bench, and the claw hammer beside it will mark the struck end without peening a rivet. An engineer's hammer buying guide settles the job, the pein, the head weight and the handle before a brand name matters. The seven amazon.co.uk listings in the [engineer's hammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/engineers-hammer) were captured on 19 October 2026 and run from about £4.95 to about £19.98. Peter F. read those listings and the UK review text saved with them. There was no lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What an engineer's hammer is for

An engineer's hammer is a steel striking tool with a flat face and a second end that is either a ball or a cross pein. You use the flat face on punches, cold chisels and the struck end of a rivet. Screwfix describes the ball pein for shaping and riveting, and the cross pein as a narrow wedge for small tacks and panel pins. A claw hammer draws nails. Three listings state a ball pein: the Amtech at 4 oz, the WIESEMANN 1893 at 300 g, and the HOUSERAN at 2 lb. Two state a cross pein: the WEDO at 200 g, and the Meiwaltee. The Amazon Basics set and the Bosch 300 g leave the pein unnamed. Their head-style rows say Flat and Straight.

Head weight, not item weight

Read the head weight in the title, and keep the item-weight row as a separate figure. DT Online, a teaching note and not a British Standard, treats about 12 oz as general work, about 4–8 oz as fine work, and about 2 lb as heavier work. Tooled-Up puts about 200–300 g on precision metalwork and about 500–800 g on heavier metal. Those bands are a map, not a hardness test. The same listing often prints two masses. Do not average them. The WIESEMANN is the listing where the title, the bullets and the item weight all say 300 g. The Amazon Basics set prints 300 g, 500 g and 1,000 g as three hammers.

Handle and what you can repair

Choose the handle by what you can do on the day the head moves. Wood can be re-wedged if the head is still sound. Fibreglass cannot take a hammer wedge. Cromwell lists wedges for wooden shafts. A one-piece steel hammer has no eye. A loose head is a reason to stop before it is a repair. The Amtech handle is wood, and several UK reviews say the head came off. The Amazon Basics title says hickory and the grip-type row says Hazel. The WIESEMANN and the WEDO are fibreglass. The Bosch material row says rubber and the bullets say a fibreglass core. The HOUSERAN grip is rubber. The Meiwaltee bullets say drop-forged one-piece steel. Soaking a loose wooden head is a mistake, not a fix.

Standards and the price bands in this set

BS 876:1995 is the British Standard whose scope includes engineers' ball pein and cross pein hammers. None of these seven listings prints that number. The only standard line in the capture is the WIESEMANN bullet that says the head complies with DIN 1041. That is a German pattern claim, not a certificate. The WEDO bullets say the face is 50–58 HRC. The WIESEMANN says induction hardened and prints no HRC number. On 19 October 2026 the shelf prices ran from about £4.95 to about £19.98. The WEDO's 5.0 comes from two ratings. A Picard 300 g hickory hammer on RS was £24.86 including VAT on 21 October 2026, outside this table.

Common questions

What weight should I buy for ordinary chisel and punch work?
For ordinary punches and cold chisels, look for a head around 200–300 g, close to the 12 oz DT Online treats as general work. In this capture the WIESEMANN prints 300 g in the title, the bullets and the item weight. The Bosch title also says 300 g, while its item-weight row says 470 g, and it does not name a pein. A 4 oz title is the fine-work end.
Is a 2 lb hammer the best all-rounder?
A 2 lb head is the heavier band in the DT Online note, not a default for every job. The HOUSERAN is the 2 lb title here, at about £15.99, with an item weight of 1.09 kg that is not split into head and handle. Nine UK reviews call it strong and heavy, including use on cars. It is a poor default for a small cold chisel.
Why is the item weight heavier than the grams in the title?
The title often names the head, and the item-weight row often names the whole hammer. The WEDO title says a 200 g head and the item row says 550 g. The Bosch title says 300 g and the item row says 470 g. The Meiwaltee title prints 20 oz and 850 g together, and those are not the same mass. Do not average them.
Does DIN 1041 mean it meets a British Standard?
No listing in this capture prints BS 876:1995, the British Standard whose scope names engineers' ball pein and cross pein hammers. The WIESEMANN bullets say the head complies with DIN 1041. That is a German pattern claim, and the file contains no certificate. It does not convert the hammer into a BS 876 tool.
What should I check before I trust a £5 listing?
On the about £4.95 Amtech, check that the head is tight before you swing, because several UK reviews say the head was loose, glued, or came off. The title says ball pein and 4 oz (115 g), the head-style row says Flat, and the item weight says 160 g. A 4.5 from 301 ratings does not cancel that loose-head theme. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 still covers a hammer that is not of satisfactory quality.
