Ball pein vs cross pein

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are choosing a head for a rivet, a cold chisel, a pin or a piece of sheet, and the two ends of an engineer's hammer do different work. Ball pein vs cross pein is a shape decision. The round pein domes and rounds. The wedge starts a narrow line. Both patterns share a flat face, and that flat face is what strikes the chisel. The full table is on the [engineer's hammer comparison](/hub/hand-tools/engineers-hammer). Peter F. used amazon.co.uk listings captured on 19 October 2026, plus Screwfix and DT Online for the shape names. There was no lab test. Round pein and wedge pein

A ball pein is a rounded end opposite a flat face. Screwfix describes it for shaping, riveting and rounding fasteners. DT Online describes the same hammer for snap-head rivets, where the ball helps form the dome. A cross pein is a wedge, which Screwfix describes for starting small tacks and panel pins. You pick the ball when the metal should become a dome. You pick the cross pein when the metal should start under a narrow edge. The flat face is common to both, and it is the end you put on a punch or a cold chisel. A heavier ball does not become a wedge because you swing harder. BS 876:1995 names the two patterns separately. None of the seven listings prints that number.

Rivets, chisels, pins, and sheet

For a snap-head rivet, the ball is the end that forms the dome after the flat face has set the work. DT Online puts snap-head rivets with the ball pein. You still drive the rivet set, or the chisel, with the flat face. A cross pein can start a small pin or open a seam because the contact is a narrow wedge. If the drawing calls for a round head, you change hammers rather than hoping extra mass will round a wedge. Cold chisels follow the flat face on either pattern. Panel pins and small tacks are where Screwfix puts the wedge. On sheet, the Meiwaltee bullets say to keep the face parallel to the panel. The wedge is the second end.

A joiner's pin hammer is a different tool

A woodwork cross pein is easy to mix up with this one. InterDIY's cross-pein paragraph is the Warrington pattern, a joiner's hammer for starting nails in timber. An engineer's cross pein is a metalwork wedge. A pin hammer from a woodwork aisle is a different tool from the WEDO machinist cross peen. If your pins are in timber, you are outside this comparison. If your pins, rivets and sheet are metal, stay with the patterns on this page.

What this capture actually states

Three listings state a ball pein: the Amtech 4 oz, whose head-style row says Flat and whose UK reviews report a head that came off; the WIESEMANN 300 g, where the title, bullets and item weight agree; and the HOUSERAN 2 lb, whose head-style row says Round. That heavy ball is a poor match for a small rivet you wanted to dome gently. The WIESEMANN DIN 1041 bullet is a German pattern claim, not BS 876. Two listings state a cross pein: the WEDO 200 g, at 5.0 from two ratings, and the Meiwaltee, whose bullets say a wedge or cross peen. The Amazon Basics row says Flat and the Bosch 1600A032UW says Straight. Leave those two blank.

Common questions

What is the round end for, and what is the wedge for?
The round end, the ball pein, forms a dome on a snap-head rivet and rounds a fastener, which is how Screwfix and DT Online describe it. The wedge, the cross pein, starts a small tack or panel pin and does precise shaping where a broad face would be clumsy. Both hammers still have a flat face for driving a punch or a chisel.
Which pein do I use to strike a cold chisel?
You use the flat face, on a ball pein or a cross pein, held square to the end of the chisel. The pein itself is the wrong end for that blow. DT Online lists cold chisels among ball-pein work, and the ball is still not the striking face.
Can a cross pein set a domed rivet?
A cross pein leaves a narrow mark where a ball forms a round snap head. DT Online pairs snap-head rivets with the ball pein. You can drive a rivet set with the flat face of a cross-pein hammer, and you still need the ball when the finished head should be a dome.
Is a cross pein hammer just a pin hammer?
A pin hammer in the woodwork sense is often a Warrington cross pein, which InterDIY describes for starting nails in timber. An engineer's cross pein is a metalwork wedge for pins, seams and shaping. The WEDO in this capture is titled a machinist cross peen for riveting and metalwork. A joiner's pin hammer from another aisle is not that listing.
Which captured hammers are ball pein, and which are cross pein?
Ball pein, as the listing states it: the Amtech 4 oz, the WIESEMANN 300 g, and the HOUSERAN 2 lb. Cross pein: the WEDO 200 g head, and the Meiwaltee, whose bullets say a wedge or cross peen. The Amtech head-style row says Flat, so that ball is claimed and disputed. The Amazon Basics set and the Bosch 300 g do not name either pein.
Why is the Bosch pein left blank?
The Bosch file for B0DSWGSZ8T, a 300 g engineers' hammer at about £11.20, has a head-style row that says Straight. The bullets do not say ball or cross. That is not enough to assign a pein. The Amazon Basics set is blank for the same reason: head style Flat, and no ball or cross in the bullets. This page will not copy a pein or an HRC figure from a different Bosch model, 1600A027PH, onto 1600A032UW.
