Electric nail file for gel polish removal

Updated: 23 October 2026

An electric nail file for gel polish removal can take a thin colour off if you stay at the lower end of the speed band and stop before the natural plate. The same sanding bands are a poor tool for bulk acrylic, which usually needs a carbide these parcels do not name. The [electric file comparison](/hub/hand-tools/electric-file) is the twelve-row table. Heat and rest sit on the [how to use an electric nail file](/hub/hand-tools/electric-file/sub/electric-file-how-to-use) page. Peter F. updated this on 22 October 2026. Gel polish is not the same job as acrylic

Gel polish is a thin film. Builder gel, BIAB, hard gel and acrylic are bulk. UK reviewers here talk about a stated 20,000 RPM corded pen for home gel, and a 30,000 RPM clip-on when the product is thicker. The printed maximum is headroom in both cases. A sanding band on a mandrel can lift product. Scratch Magazine describes carbide as the bit that shaves acrylic, builder gel and gel polish, and says carbide should stay off the natural nail. A UK review of the COSLUS C40 says acrylic removal failed because no carbide was in the kit.

Speed bands that do not quite match

Trade schools do not print the same gel-polish number, and you should not average them into a new RPM. Professional Beauty’s medium band for thinner enhancements is about 10,000–15,000 RPM, and the high band for bulk is about 15,000–35,000 RPM. Katie Barnes Academy starts gel polish at about 15,000–20,000 RPM. PBL Magazine describes removals around 15,000–25,000 RPM. None is a test of these twelve motors. Use the lower end you can still control. A stated 20,000 RPM maximum is headroom. It does not mean you hold that speed on the colour. Brand PDFs that print 2–5 RPM have dropped the thousands. Ignore them. Professional Beauty treats 150 grit as the quick remover and 240 as the gentler band.

Sanding bands, carbide, and what these boxes list

A sanding band can tidy gel polish. It struggles once you try to debulk thick acrylic, because the band abrades and the carbide shaves. Both COSLUS C40 listings, B0CGF1CR3B and B0CGF18WMJ, list six drill bits, 31 sanding bands and a USB cable. Carbide is not named. The PC120I bullet is the only one that states a 3/32 inch (2.35 mm) shank, and at least one UK review says the supplied bits did not fit. The POFIBO lists metal bits and sanding bands, while included components only says 02. Metal is not carbide. The SC300F recommends diamond bits and sanding bands. The Scamander recommends ceramic bits and sanding bands. If you need acrylic removal, buy a carbide separately and confirm the shank. A kit whose bits do not fit is a fault under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 22, normally within 30 days.

Which pen in this set matches the job

For gel polish at home, stay with a stated 20,000 RPM corded pen and a sanding band or a fine bit, at the lower end of the trade band. In this folder that group includes the PC120I and both COSLUS C40 lines. The COSLUS must stay on the lead if the removal runs long. That conflict is on the cordless or corded electric nail file page. This page does not name a best gel drill in the UK. Look at the SC300F at £33.99 or the Scamander at £69.99 only when the product is bulk and you will buy a carbide that fits. Their bullets do not name one. The NHS describes antifungal treatment over 6–12 months, and a drill is not that treatment.

Common questions

Can a home electric nail file remove gel polish?
Yes, for a thin gel colour, if you use a sanding band or a fine bit at the lower end of the trade band and stop before the natural plate. The usual tool in this set is a corded pen with a stated 20,000 RPM maximum, used as headroom. Professional Beauty’s medium band sits around 10,000–15,000 RPM, and other educators start higher. Use the lower end you can control. Bulk acrylic usually needs a carbide these boxes do not name.
What speed band fits gel polish, and why do the guides disagree?
Professional Beauty puts thinner enhancements around 10,000–15,000 RPM. Katie Barnes Academy starts gel polish around 15,000–20,000 RPM. PBL Magazine describes removals around 15,000–25,000 RPM, then a slower pass. They are trade rules of thumb, not a test of these pens. This page does not average them. Stay at the lower end for a thin colour, and treat a printed 20,000 or 35,000 RPM maximum as headroom.
Will the sanding bands in a £10 kit take off acrylic or hard gel?
They are a weak tool for that bulk. A UK review of the COSLUS C40 says acrylic removal failed because no carbide was included. The kit lists six drill bits and 31 sanding bands, and carbide is not named. Bands can lift thin product. Carbide shaves thicker product, and Scratch Magazine says it should stay off the natural nail. A 150 or 180 grit band is for product. A 240 grit band is the gentler one near the plate.
Which listing in this set actually includes a carbide bit?
None of the twelve saved bullets names a carbide in the box. The POFIBO’s metal bits are not that word. The PC120I states a 3/32 inch shank and does not count a carbide. A carbide has flutes that shave product, and educators keep it off the bare plate. If you need one, buy it separately and check the shank, because every other shank in this folder is unstated.
Is a 20,000 RPM corded pen enough, or do you need a 30,000 RPM clip-on?
A stated 20,000 RPM corded pen is the usual home tool here for gel polish, with the working speed below that maximum. The SC300F and the Scamander are the 30,000 RPM clip-ons reviewers discuss for bulk. Their bullets recommend diamond or ceramic bits and sanding bands, and they still do not name a carbide. Broken-lead reviews mean the higher price is headroom, not a guarantee the handpiece cable will last.
