How to use a digital torque wrench without guessing

Updated: 23 October 2026

The socket is on the square, the handbook says a number, and the screen is either ready or blank. How to use a digital torque wrench comes down to four checks: the unit, the target, a smooth pull, and a stop. A dead screen is not a reason to finish the bolt by feel. This page does not rank the ten listings. Wheel-nut figures stay on the [digital torque wrench for wheel nuts](/hub/hand-tools/digital-torque-wrench/sub/digital-torque-wrench-car-wheels) page, and the [digital torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/digital-torque-wrench) is the table. Peter F. used amazon.co.uk review notes and public UK manuals on 22 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Unit, target, and a stable screen

Set the unit before the number. A target of 25 in the wrong unit is a different bolt. A UK review of the SHINTOUR set glow plugs at 25 Nm, with a buzz and vibration. If the sheet is in ft-lb, leave the wrench in ft-lb. The ARM601-3 prints 3.7–37 ft-lb in the title and 2–37 in the bullets. Read the number back before the socket turns. Power on while the tool is unloaded, as Sealey’s STW306.V2 sheet says for a wrench outside this folder. Fit the cells the door takes. On the ARM601-3 one review found a 2032 door and an AAA door, and the AAA cells worked. If you cannot read the digits, stop. The window check is the digital torque wrench buying guide.

Peak, track, and the stop

Peak and track have no shared button map here. Sealey’s STW306.V2 is a pattern, not the Uharbour or ACDelco manual. On that sheet, track falls back when you release, and peak holds the maximum and flashes after about two seconds. Stop at the continuous tone. Sealey’s limit is 110% of maximum. GROWNEER’s bullet on AX242903 says 120%. Do not mix those into one rule. Pull smoothly, hand on the grip, and stop when the alert fires. One more nudge overshoots a tool that has already beeped. The Uharbour UHXM011 and the SHINTOUR can buzz, vibrate and light an LED. Change the preset for the next bolt.

When the display gives up

Stop if the screen goes blank or dies mid-pull. On B0081AQDIY a UK review describes the display dying halfway through clutch bolts after new batteries, and the buyer borrowed another wrench. On B08YMQNCS4 a review reports LO with new batteries. Sealey and Clarke sheets describe a battery symbol, not the letters LO, and these ACDelco files do not define LO either. Read the paper in that box. Do not keep turning. If the bolt is stretching or you cannot support the car, call a professional.

What you do not copy from a click wrench

Store a click wrench at the lowest mark. Norbar’s wind-back note is about that spring. SoarFly reviewers liked having no spring to unload, so do not invent the ritual for these digital tools. Switch them off, and treat a low battery as an accuracy problem. That storage difference is the digital or click torque wrench page. GROWNEER includes a 5 inch extension and VANPO a 125 mm one. Jaguar says not to add an extension on the wheel brace. If you use one, do not quote the naked ±2%. If the manual wants degrees and the wrench will not measure them, stop.

Common questions

Do I set Nm or ft-lb first?
Set the unit that the sheet uses, then enter the target, then read it back before you load the bolt. A 25 Nm glow-plug setting on the SHINTOUR is not 25 ft-lb. The ARM601-3 prints its range in ft-lb even though the unit list includes Nm. If you convert, write the converted figure down. Do not convert while the socket is already on the nut.
What is peak mode versus track mode?
On Sealey’s STW306.V2, which is a pattern and not the manual in these Amazon boxes, track falls away when you release and peak holds the maximum and flashes after about two seconds. Several listings here name peak and track, or peak and trace, without printing that button map. Use the sheet in your case for the buttons. Use the idea only as a check: you need to know whether the number on screen is the live load or the highest load you have just applied.
Where do I put my hand?
On the grip, in a smooth pull, and you stop when the buzzer, the vibration or the LED says the target is there. Do not choke up on the head to make the wrench feel shorter, and do not add your body weight past the alert. GROWNEER says not to pass 120% of maximum. Sealey’s outside-the-set manual says 110%. Whichever limit is printed on your tool is the one you keep.
What if the screen goes blank mid-pull?
Stop. On the about £89.99 ARM607-4, a UK review describes the display dying halfway through clutch bolts after new batteries, and the buyer used another wrench. Do not finish those bolts by feel, and do not add a bit more because the nut has started to move. Fit fresh cells of the correct type only after the load is off, and if the screen will not stay on, the wrench is out of the job.
What does LO mean on an ACDelco?
A UK review of B08YMQNCS4 reports LO with new batteries. Sealey and Clarke sheets describe a battery symbol, not the letters LO, and the ACDelco manual is not in the saved listing. Do not treat LO as a code you can clear by pressing on. Stop, read the paper that came with that wrench, and do not quote a torque from a screen that is already in an error state.
