Digital torque wrench for wheel nuts, on the ground

Updated: 23 October 2026

The wheel is off, and a forum has offered 110 Nm as if every car in Britain used the same figure. A digital torque wrench for wheel nuts is the right tool only when your handbook number sits inside the stated range, on a 1/2 inch square, and you tighten on the ground. Bicycle bolts are a warning here, not a second guide. The full table is the [digital torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/digital-torque-wrench). The figure is the car’s, not the internet’s

About 100–120 Nm is a published typical, not your torque. Start with the handbook or the placard. Jaguar’s procedure for one job says 125 Nm, also printed as 92 lb-ft, and do not exceed it. Do not add foot pressure or an extension on the wheel brace. Bulletin S204-02 later says the figure is 128 Nm plus or minus 10 Nm, threads clean, dry and ungreased. One maker, two numbers. Grease on a dry specification changes the clamp, because the wrench measures twist, not stud tension. Other jobs use the digital torque wrench buying guide. Here the question is whether the wrench can hold your car’s number.

Which digital wrenches in this set can reach it

Use 125 Nm as a worked example, not as your target. The window has to include it: 1/2 inch bullets of 10–200 Nm or 20–200 Nm, and the Uharbour UHXM013 title of 5.1–340 Nm against a bullet of 3.8–250.8 ft-lb. That title says ±1% and the bullet says ±2%. The ARM607-4 bullets include 125 Nm. The item-torque field of 88 Nm is a different number. Do not buy on it. The SHINTOUR stops at 30 Nm even if a bullet says lug nut. The UHXM011 stops at 60 Nm. The ARM601-3 prints 37 ft-lb. A 60 Nm tool is the wrong tool. Who that 3/8 inch row is for is on the best digital torque wrench page.

On the ground, in a star, then stop

Run the nuts up in a star, or the handbook pattern, then apply the final figure with the wheel on the ground. A beep with the tyre in the air is not the clamp once the weight is on the hub. Pull smoothly and stop when the alert fires. Do not add a second pull, and do not stand on the wrench. A handbook in Nm and a wrench left in ft-lb hits the alert at the wrong load. For 125 Nm the wrench has to be in Nm, or you use 92 lb-ft if that is the figure the sheet printed. If you cannot support the car, stop. Whether a click is kinder for one repeated setting is the digital or click torque wrench page, after you know the number.

Extensions, grease, and a blank screen

The car procedure wins over the kit. VANPO includes a 125 mm extension and GROWNEER a 5 inch one. Jaguar says not to use an extension on the wheel brace. If the socket reaches, leave the bar in the case, because the stated ±2% was not written for a stack. The S-TYPE bulletin wants threads clean, dry and ungreased. Wipe the studs if the handbook says dry. A blank screen is a stop: one ARM607-4 review describes the display dying mid-job, and the buyer used another wrench. Call someone if a nut is rounded, a bolt has snapped, or the manual wants an angle. Angle mode is not established on these ten titles.

Common questions

What torque are my wheel nuts?
The number is in your vehicle handbook or on the placard for that car, and it can change between generations of the same model. This page cannot print it for you. Jaguar documents show why: one owner procedure says 125 Nm and not to exceed it, and an S-TYPE bulletin says 128 Nm plus or minus 10 Nm because earlier literature was wrong. Use your document, dry or lubricated exactly as it says.
Is 110 Nm safe to assume?
No. About 100–120 Nm is only a typical quoted in general guides. It is not a substitute for the handbook, and it is not a midpoint of the Jaguar figures. Tightening to 110 Nm on a car specified at 125 Nm, or at 128 Nm, is a different clamp. If you cannot find the figure, stop and look it up before the wheel goes back on, rather than borrowing a number from a forum.
Will the 60 Nm Uharbour do a car wheel?
No. The UHXM011 is listed at 0.9–60 Nm. A worked example of 125 Nm is more than twice that ceiling, and a typical wheel nut in the 100–140 Nm region is outside it too. The wrench is a strong choice for e-bike bolts and glow plugs in its own reviews. Using it on a wheel nut means the alert can never mean the handbook figure, because the tool is not specified to get there.
Will the 1/4 inch wrench do a wheel because the bullet says lug nut?
No. The SHINTOUR DTW03-30A is 0.45–30 Nm. The words lug nut appear in a bullet, and the range still ends at 30 Nm. A UK review used it at 25 Nm on glow plugs, which is inside the window. A car wheel nut is not. Marketing words do not extend the scale.
Do I torque the nuts in the air or on the ground?
Run them up in the handbook pattern, then apply the final figure with the wheel on the ground so the car’s weight is on the tyre, not on the studs alone. A beep while the wheel is still in the air is an unfinished job. Stop at the alert. Do not add a comfort pull afterwards, and do not stand on the handle.
