Digital torque wrench buying guide, range and drive

Updated: 23 October 2026

You already have a number for the bolt, usually in a handbook or on a workshop sheet, and the amazon.co.uk page is selling a screen, a beep and a percentage. A digital torque wrench buying guide only helps if that number sits inside the stated range, on a square that matches the socket, before you compare stars. Shelf prices in this folder run from about £59.11 to about £159.99. This page is the order of the decision. The [digital torque wrench comparison](/hub/hand-tools/digital-torque-wrench) is the ten-row table. Peter F. checked those listings and public UK sources on 22 October 2026. We did not calibrate any wrench. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

Match the number, then the square

Put the handbook figure inside a stated window, not on a title that begins at 0 Nm. A 20–200 Nm wrench cannot set a 5 Nm stem bolt. One UK review of an ACDelco ARM607-4 stopped at a 10 Nm cam bolt because the bullet starts at 20 Nm. The SHINTOUR stops at 30 Nm and the UHXM011 at 60 Nm. Neither is a wheel-nut wrench. A 0 Nm SoarFly title is not a low end. A 1/4 inch or a short 3/8 inch suits low newton-metres. A 1/2 inch square is the wheel-nut drive. One verified review says the SoarFly attachment cracked at 80 Nm. Road wheels stay on the digital torque wrench for wheel nuts page.

What the screen is allowed to claim

A percentage in a title is a seller claim, not a test we ran. For many indicating tools, the ISO 6789-1:2017 sample table is about ±6% at 10 Nm or below and about ±4% above 10 Nm, unless the maker claims tighter. The Uharbour UHXM013 prints ±1% and 5.1–340 Nm in the title, and ±2% plus 3.8–250.8 ft-lb in a bullet. The ARM601-3 prints 3.7–37 ft-lb in the title, 2–37 ft-lb in the bullets, and no percentage. ACDelco’s UK shop lists clockwise ±2% and anticlockwise ±3%. Amazon bullets on the ARM607-4 say clockwise ±1.5% and anticlockwise ±2.5%. A click wrench at ±3% of reading is the digital or click torque wrench comparison.

Cells, case, and the paper in the lid

Read the included-components line. The ARM607-4 bullets say four AAA cells are not included. The SoarFly includes two AA cells. The GROWNEER bullet says one AAA cell. The two-wrench kit’s copy says AAA, while two UK reviews found coin cells. Fit the cells the door takes. A factory ISO 6789 slip is not a UKAS calibration to ISO 6789-2. One ARM607-4 buyer received the tool on 12 January 2024 with a certificate dated 7 November 2021. Who each row is for sits on the best digital torque wrench page.

Two ranges, not one hero tool

No wrench here covers a carbon stem and a car wheel nut. The SHINTOUR ceiling is 30 Nm. The Uharbour 3/8 inch ceiling is 60 Nm. The VANPO, GROWNEER and ARM607-4 bullets run to 200 Nm from 10 or 20 Nm, which can hold many wheel figures and cannot hold 5 Nm. The ACDelco combo at about £159.99 still clashes on model name and battery type. Peak holds the high value. Track shows the live number. ARM607-4 reviews call the screen dim. Stop at the alert. If the screen dies, change tools. The item-torque field is 88 Nm on the ARM607-4 listings while the bullet is a range. Do not buy on that single field.

Common questions

What drive do I need on a digital torque wrench?
Match the square to the socket and to the newton-metre window. A 1/4 inch drive is the SHINTOUR’s 0.45–30 Nm shape. A 3/8 inch drive in this folder is either a short ft-lb window or the 0.9–60 Nm Uharbour. A 1/2 inch drive is the one whose bullets reach 200 Nm, or the Uharbour title that prints 5.1–340 Nm. An adapter changes the socket. It does not raise the wrench’s stated ceiling.
Why is a 20–200 Nm wrench wrong for a 5 Nm stem bolt?
The stated lower limit is part of the specification. ISO 6789-1 expects marks below that limit to be identifiable as outside the range. A UK review of the ARM607-4 could not set a 10 Nm cam bolt on a tool whose bullet starts at 20 Nm. A 5 Nm stem bolt is further outside that window. Use a wrench whose stated range includes 5 Nm, such as the 0.45–30 Nm SHINTOUR, and still read the stem maker’s figure rather than a generic bike number.
Is ±1% the ISO limit for these wrenches?
No. The ISO 6789-1 sample table for many indicating tools is wider: about ±6% at 10 Nm or below and about ±4% above 10 Nm, unless the maker claims a tighter figure, in which case that claim is the limit they have to meet. A ±1% line on a Uharbour or SoarFly title is the seller’s claim. We did not verify it on a rig, and the UHXM013 bullet on the same listing says ±2%.
What is a factory ISO 6789 slip, compared with UKAS?
A factory slip is the maker’s conformance paper. UKAS calibration to ISO 6789-2 is a laboratory measurement with an uncertainty, which Lambda in the UK still offers against both the current standard and the withdrawn 2003 edition. One Amazon review received an ARM607-4 certificate that was already more than two years old. That slip is not evidence the tool was calibrated in Britain last month.
Are the batteries in the box?
Sometimes, and the included-components line is the place to look. SoarFly includes two AA cells. GROWNEER’s bullet includes one AAA cell. Both ACDelco ARM607-4 listings say four AAA cells are not included. The combo kit’s text and its UK reviews disagree on AAA versus coin cells. If the door and the bullet disagree, fit what the door takes and keep spares, because a flat cell is a reason to stop, not a reason to guess the torque.
