How to use a cordless planer without scooping the end

Updated: 23 October 2026

The board looks simple until the last 30 mm scoops out, or the dial says zero and the edge still comes off. How to use a cordless planer, on the tools in this UK set, is a shallow cut proved on scrap, then a pass that moves your weight to the rear before the front shoe leaves the timber. The rows are on the [cordless plane comparison](/hub/hand-tools/cordless-plane). Peter F., DIY and tools editor, wrote this on 22 October 2026 from the DeWalt DCP580 manual, Einhell's commercial-use limit and the UK review notes. We did not film a cut. Set the depth on scrap, not on the door

The DeWalt manual moves the DCP580 in clicks of 0.1 mm, up to about 2 mm. The first pass should sit well under the listed maximum. BuildWiz suggests about 0.4–0.5 mm on a door. Treat that as their guidance, not a British Standard. Cut a scrap of the same timber first. If the shaving is thick, torn or absent, the dial is wrong, the knife is nicked, or the shoe is not flat. How much to leave on a door is cordless planer for doors.

How one pass should feel

Put the front shoe flat on the timber before the knives touch. Let the drum reach speed, then enter the cut. If you push the front knob as the front shoe runs off the end, the knives dig and the last few centimetres dish out. Shift your weight onto the rear handle while the rear shoe is still supported. Lift off before you release the switch. The DeWalt manual says that, and it says not to lock the switch on. A pass that hesitates leaves a step. If the motor bogs, the cut is too deep or the pack is flat. Which body suits your batteries is the cordless planer buying guide.

Zero that still cuts, snipe and tracks

If the dial says zero and the surface still changes, run scrap and treat zero as light until the scrap stays untouched. A knife sitting proud will do the same thing. Snipe is the scooped end. The front shoe has left the wood and you are still bearing down on the front. Move your weight back. On a door you cannot add waste, so you take less depth and support the exit. Tracks are lines along the board at the knife spacing. Flip a reversible knife and try scrap. The Einhell box lists one reversible TCT knife. If a fresh knife still tracks, the seat or the shoe is out. Which body to buy is the best cordless planer page.

Lock-off, dust and hearing

The lock is there so the tool does not start in a bag. The DeWalt manual tells you not to lock the switch on. Einhell's bullets mention an automatic parking rest. Use it. Do not set a spinning tool down on the knife. Small bags fill in a few strokes. Empty the bag before the port chokes. One UK DeWalt delivery had no dust bag. Einhell reviewers say the bag is a separate buy. Wear hearing protection. DeWalt declares 85 dB(A) sound pressure and 96 dB(A) sound power. Those figures sit on the employer action values even though a householder is not being inspected. Einhell says commercial use of the TE-PL 18/82 Li voids the warranty. Stop and get a joiner for a certified fire door or a swollen pack.

Common questions

How deep should the first pass be?
Well under the 2 mm maximum on the DeWalt, the Einhell and most other rows here. The DeWalt manual uses 0.1 mm clicks and tells you to test on scrap. A UK guide's 0.4–0.5 mm for doors is their figure, not a rule. If the first oak shaving is a thick ribbon, you are too deep.
Why is the end of the board scooped?
The front shoe has run off while you are still pressing the front. That dip is snipe. Keep the rear shoe supported, move your weight back, then lift off before you switch off. A deeper cut makes the scoop worse. A blunt knife leaves a track along the length instead.
The dial says zero and it still cuts. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Two UK reviews of the DCP580 say zero still removes stock, one of them about a millimetre. Check scrap before you call it faulty. A high knife does the same thing. One Einhell review said the depth adjustment did not work as expected. Stop if scrap and the job disagree. Return the tool if zero and a backed-off dial both keep cutting after the knife is seated.
What are the lines along the board?
A nick or a blunt spot, repeating once per revolution. Turn a reversible blade and test on scrap. The Einhell listing includes one reversible TCT knife. Tracks are not snipe, and they are not a reason to copy a benchtop thicknesser. If a new knife still prints a line, stop. The seat or the shoe is out. The XIIW review called the supplied blades mediocre and fitted standard reversible ones.
Can I lock the trigger on?
No. The DeWalt manual says not to lock the switch on. Tape over the lock-off keeps the drum turning when you let go. The lock is there to prevent a start, not to hold the trigger for you. Keep both hands on the planer, and set it down on the parking rest. A one-handed pass along a door is how the tool tips off the line.
Do I need ear defenders for a short job?
Yes. DeWalt's declaration is 85 dB(A) sound pressure and 96 dB(A) sound power. That sits on the employer action values even though a householder is not being inspected. A sticking door takes minutes, and the drum is still loud in a hallway. Empty a small bag before the chips have nowhere to go.
