Cordless planer buying guide for the battery you own

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are matching a planer to batteries you already own, and the cheap yellow listing looks like the brand you wanted. A cordless planer buying guide for this UK set starts with the shoe, then with what is actually in the box. Depth, a fence and dust come after that. The cards stay on the [cordless plane comparison](/hub/hand-tools/cordless-plane). Peter F., DIY and tools editor, wrote this on 22 October 2026 from those amazon.co.uk listings and the makers' UK pages. There was no lab test. Start with the battery you already have

The planer is useless on the morning you need it if the pack does not click home. DeWalt XR here is 18 V. A title that says 20 V max names that same slide, not a second voltage. Einhell is Power X-Change and recommends 2.5 Ah or higher. The XIIW Makita claim is a seller's sentence, not a Makita tool. A 21 V kit shares none of those packs. The JAOGAUS row names Milwaukee in the bullets and Makita in the UK reviews. If you own nothing, every body-only row still needs a pack. These listings do not print a pack price. Who each strong row is for is on the best cordless planer page.

Body only is the normal branded offer

DeWalt's DCP580N-XJ at £117.98 and Einhell's TE-PL 18/82 Li Solo at £77.99 are both sold without a battery or a charger. DeWalt's bullets name a chip deflector, the included-components line says the planer only, and one UK review had no dust bag. Einhell's box lists a parallel guide, a rebate depth stop and one TCT knife. When those lines disagree, believe the shorter list. The only kept row with two batteries and a charger is the Mekturm 21 V kit at £71.99. Those packs fit nothing else you own. A mains planer can look cheaper still, which is cordless planer vs corded.

Depth, fence and dust

Width does not separate these powered rows. They are listed at 82 mm. DeWalt and Einhell are 2 mm in one pass. Only the XIIW listing says 0–3 mm, and the UK review treated 3 mm as pine and expected less in oak. A listed maximum is a poor first pass in hardwood. A V-groove guides a chamfer. It does not cut the step a rebate needs. Small bags fill fast. DeWalt declares 85 dB(A) sound pressure and 96 dB(A) sound power. Hearing protection is the default for a short job.

Traps the title will not warn you about

Yellow plastic is not a DeWalt. Gobanwei, SWTHM, both YWNYT models and the cheaper Mekturm name DeWalt pack numbers and print another brand. One UK review called Gobanwei badging fraudulent. The second YWNYT has no review line, and its seller list includes some 60 V packs. Do not treat a 60 V name as compatibility. Einhell's UK page for article 4345400 describes a brush motor. A brushless sentence in the amazon bullets sits inside a post-hole-drill line, which is the wrong product. If the tool has a BS 1363 plug, it is corded, whatever the headline says.

Common questions

Will this take the batteries I already own?
Only if the platform matches. DeWalt 18 V XR packs belong on the DCP580N-XJ. Power X-Change packs belong on the TE-PL 18/82 Li Solo, which recommends 2.5 Ah or more. The Mekturm kit uses its own 21 V packs. A yellow body that lists DCB numbers is a seller's claim, not an automatic fit. The JAOGAUS file says Milwaukee in the bullets and Makita in the reviews. If that does not match your pack, leave the row.
Why is the cheap one yellow if it is not a DeWalt?
Because yellow sells the search. The brand line is Mekturm, SWTHM, Gobanwei or YWNYT. The title then names DeWalt 18 V or 20 V packs. That is a seller's fit claim, not a DeWalt product. UK buyers here have mistaken the badge and returned the tool. Read the brand field before the colour. If the field is not DeWalt, you are buying a lookalike at about £47.99 to £59.99, still without a battery.
Do I need to buy a charger as well?
On the DeWalt and Einhell bodies, yes, unless you already own that platform's charger. Neither offer includes a pack or a charger. The Mekturm 21 V kit lists a charger with two 2.6 Ah packs, and it charges those packs only. A cheap DeWalt-slide body includes neither. Price the charger with the body before you compare £77.99 with £117.98.
Is 2 mm enough, or do I need the 3 mm listing?
For doors and fitting, 2 mm is the class of every strong row here, and you should not use all of it on the first pass. The XIIW is the only listing that prints 0–3 mm, on five reviews, and the UK note doubted 3 mm in oak. A deeper maximum is not a better door tool. Corded UK planers at 3 mm and 4 mm are a different job, at a socket, not a reason to trust a five-review cordless claim.
Does the Einhell listing settle brushless or brushed?
Einhell's UK page for this Solo describes a brush motor. The amazon bullets put a brushless claim inside a sentence about a post-hole drill, which is the wrong product. This guide follows the maker page. If brushless is the requirement, the DCP580N-XJ is the row whose title states it, and you pay the body-only XR price.
What is a rebate fence for, compared with a V-groove?
A rebate is a step, and the listing should give a depth. DeWalt prints 9 mm. Einhell prints an 8 mm fold and includes a rebate stop. A V-groove guides a chamfer and does not replace that step. Several cheap bodies mention a groove or a fence and print no rebate depth. A door edge needs neither. A step needs the millimetres.
