How to use a BGS socket set

Updated: 22 October 2026

You have the case open on the drive, a 19 mm wheel nut in front of you, and a cordless impact already charged in the boot. How to use a BGS socket set, once you have bought it, is three checks: the square drive matches, the socket clicks fully home, and chrome vanadium stays on a hand ratchet. This page does not rank the sets. If you are still choosing, start with the [BGS socket set comparison](/hub/hand-tools/bgs-socket-set). The steps follow Wonkee Donkee Tools, RS, and Toolstation’s warning on impact use. We have not lab-tested these sets. Match the drive before the socket clicks on

The square on a BGS case is the drive, not the size on the nut. A 3/8 inch socket will not seat on a 1/2 inch ratchet, and forcing it can crack the wall. Press the socket on until the detent ball clicks. If it rocks, or it falls when you point the ratchet down, it is not seated. RS says not to torque a loose socket. A rail does not include a ratchet. The BGS socket set buying guide separates rails from cases.

Turn the fastener, and keep chrome vanadium off an impact wrench

On a normal right-hand fastener, clockwise tightens and anti-clockwise loosens. Follow the arrow on the head, because brands do not agree on left and right. If the nut gets harder, flip the lever. Let the head click back without lifting the socket off. These are chrome vanadium hand sockets. Toolstation says a standard socket is not for an impact wrench. One 220 Nm remark on a 2226 review is a comment, not a rating. Use a breaker bar, then a torque wrench for the handbook figure. The opening difference is on BGS Super Lock or hexagon.

Shut the case, and know when the job is not a socket job

On the BGS 2292, reviewers mention a thin latch and play between an extension and a socket. Do not force a cracked clip. Lay the case flat or strap it. If the socket slides off when you point the extension down, swap the extension. Wheel-nut tightness is the handbook figure in newton metres. A missing size is on the BGS socket set for car repairs page. Stop for a hub nut that will not move, a lift job, brake hydraulics, or a cracked socket.

A rail still needs a handle of the same square

A socket rail does not turn a fastener by itself. You still need a ratchet or breaker bar of the same square. A reducer can twist on a tight nut, so use it only when the squares differ and it is the right way round. If the socket will not click, the squares differ, and forcing them damages the drive before the nut has moved.

Common questions

How do I put a BGS socket on the ratchet?
Match the square first: 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch to 3/8 inch, or 1/2 inch to 1/2 inch. Press the socket straight on until the detent ball clicks and it no longer rocks. Use the stamp for that fastener, such as 17 mm on a 17 mm head. Leave a reducer out when the drives already match. Forcing different squares damages the drive before the nut moves.
Which way does the lever loosen a nut?
Look down on the fastener. Anti-clockwise loosens a normal right-hand thread, and clockwise tightens it. The lever on the ratchet head selects which way the tool drives, and the arrow on the head is the guide. Brands do not put that lever in the same place, so do not copy an older ratchet without checking this one. If the nut gets tighter when you meant to undo it, flip the lever before the flats start to round.
Can I use a BGS socket set on an impact wrench?
No. These are chrome vanadium hand sockets. Toolstation states that standard sockets are not for impact wrenches, because the shock can break them. BGS does not publish a torque rating for the sets covered here, and one 220 Nm comment on a 2226 review is not a specification. Break the nut free with a ratchet or a breaker bar, and use a torque wrench for the handbook figure. An impact socket is a different tool.
What if the case will not stay shut?
On the BGS 2292, reviewers describe a latch that is thin or breaks. Forcing a cracked clip will not keep the lid shut in the boot. Store the case flat or strap it so the smaller sockets cannot spill in the car. The sockets are still usable once each one clicks onto the drive. A latch that will not hold is a fault in the case, separate from whether the squares and openings suit the job.
What if the socket is loose on the extension?
A seated socket clicks and stays on when you point the tool downwards. Play between socket and extension shows up in 2292 reviews as a rock you can feel. RS advises against torque through a loose socket, because the drive slips and the fastener is marked. Reseat it until the ball catches. If it still rocks, change the extension or the socket. Do not move a loose joint onto an impact wrench.
How tight should a wheel nut be?
Use the torque in that vehicle’s handbook, in newton metres, for the wheel nuts on that car. A BGS socket set does not carry a universal figure, and this page is not substituting one. Run the nut down by hand so the wheel is seated, then finish with a torque wrench on the same drive as the socket. If the nut will not break free with a hand tool, stop rather than fitting a chrome vanadium socket to an impact wrench.
